Can someone explain the REQ system?

I started playing Halo 5 recently and every forum I go to many people say “I only got X number of REQ packs left to open”. The store itself says two REQ items are permanent. Well I opened 5 silver packs and the only permanent items I unlocked is a helmet and an armor.

I also see people saying it takes something like 300 hours to unlock everything or $1,000+ to buy all the REQS but how do people calculate this if its completely random and armor/skins isn’t even guaranteed?

I just keep getting stuff for Warzone from silver packs

Ok… (deep breath)…

Req packs are how you use power weapons and vehicles in firefight and warzone (reg., assault and turbo). Req packs are also how you unlock customizables like helmets and emblems. It doesn’t take 300 hours… I’ve been playing the since July of last year and had everything unlocked in the req system by November or so. The most efficient way to do it is to do exactly what you already did, start with silver packs. Buy nothing but silver packs until they start giving you req points back. Once that happens, start opening gold packs and repeat the process. It’s random in the sense that you don’t know precisely what you’re going to get with each specific pack… you’ll some type of unlockable… you just don’t know what until you open. If you play firefight a lot, or even feel like playing a lot of mythic firefight, you’ll build up your RP faster, and can buy req packs sooner and more frequently (that’s what I did).

If you’re a super nerd like I am, someone put together a google spreadsheet that helps keep track of what you unlocked, how many of the different packs you have left, and how much RP it’ll take to unlock everything. I used it for me, and I’m using one for my wife’s req grind as well. If you’d like, I can send it your way if it’ll help you out.

And for the record, the only actual money I’ve spent on req packs is for the voices pack… totally worth to hear the grunt instead of palmer… But I never spent money unlocking stuff. You’ll get it all eventually, just takes time and patience.

They are “random-ish”…in the sense that single use item drops are mostly random, and the order that you get unlocks is random, but the system is designed to let you unlock everything by level SR 149 or so without spending any money.

Absolutely correct here… probably explained a little better than what i did. I can’t remember exactly rank i was when I finished, but it was definitely somewhere in the 140s… but like i said earlier, not sure how doing strictly mythic ff would change that… I would imagine it would speed it up a little…

I finished around end of 148/149 IIRC. Didn’t buy any packs so that sounds about right. Glad we are moving past the system tbh, Reach was better in every way and a much more hopeful fit for infinite.

I didn’t really have any real issues with the req system… my issue was in the options of customizeables you got in 5… I’m learning it’s basically a rehash of stuff from previous games… i wish we had more options than we do… in just about everything… I personally think reach went too far in the other direction and was a bit much… i liked it and how i had total customization… but at times i feel overwhelmed going through it all…

Very interesting, I definitely had the opposite experience with Reach which was in fact the only game since the original trilogy which didnt overwhelm me. H5 has way too many variants separated by pages from each other, H4 was better but still a tad difficult to navigate imo.

Reach had its armors laid out in progression and would drop down for the variants/addons once selected keeping armor types grouped together. While it had more things to customize it also kept it neat which personally made it much better for me. Either way my real gripe with H5 is not being able to purchase the armors I want directly and being stuck at the high levels just grinding in order to get the chance of maybe earning my preferred set. This is where I really prefer Reach’s direct purchase system over H5.

I just meant the amount of options and the detail into which you customize… the menu and layout were pretty brilliant… i just had too many options and too many pieces… i just never thought the selection in its entirety was any good in 5… most of the armors were just updates of armors from previous games. I would have loved to see new designs (achilles like) that were part of the req process. Lack of color options was troublesome for me too… i wish i would have had the ability to change the pattern on the armors and helmets instead of being stuck with what they gave us… hopefully that’ll change in infinite…

The point when you will get a full req collecting is highly dependent on how effective you are at obtaining req points and spending the req points. Like Prewojo said, the most effective method to get a complete req collection (obtain every permanent item obtainable from Bronze, Silver and Gold Packs) is to focus on opening Silver Packs until they start to return req points and then focus on the Gold Packs. The reasoning for why this method is most effective is that Silver Packs gives permanent cards for essentially half the price compared to Gold Packs.

Another thing to take into consideration is to obtain req points efficiently. One method to achieve this is to play Mythic Warzone Firefight which is one of the playlists that gives most req points for per minute played. This playlist gives around double the amount of req points compared to (Heroic) Warzone Firefight.

However, it should be noted that the Tundra Mongoose Certification and Woodland Mongoose Certification can only be obtained from Bronze Packs. Every other item in the standard req poll can either be obtained from Silver or Gold Packs.

Many things count as permanent unlocks such as Warzone Weapon Certifications, Armours, Loadout Weapons, Weapon Skins And Vehicle Certifications.
Here’s some info about each:

Weapon/Vehicle Certifications- Once you get one of these, you get 3 of the Weapon/Vehicle. Increases your chances of getting these weapons in other packs. Common misunderstanding is that these give you unlimited Req card.

Loadout Weapons-Gives you access to weapons that you can unlimitedly spawn upon reviving. Each is different by either:
Scope
Ammo
Bullet magnetism
Effective reticle range

Armours-Customisable. Change to Whatever you like

Weapon Skins-Changes the colour scheme of weapons. Based on many things

These come in different rarities, meaning the rarer the item the harder it is to obtain it :
Mythic, Legendary, Ultra Rare, Rare, Uncommon, Common
^
Rarest

Mythic weapons have 3 Stars at the bottom of their card. They are said to be Ultra Rare or Legendary but the 3 stars indicate they are mythic. These weapons are supremely better than others,

Thanks for all the help guys. I got another question though, I played Warzone firefight and randomly got 3 warzone gold packs and sometimes I get silver warzone packs… why is this?

I would guess that you refer to the req packs given for reaching the Warzone Firefight Commendation milestones.

the first thing you need to do is focus on the bronze packs make sure you have all the commen armor and helmets then focus on the silver make sure you have (almost) all uncommen and rare armor and helmets and only then you can go gold the reason i tell you this is if you start immediatly with silver youre just wasting youre req point because the chance that you get a commen armor is WAY bigger then uncommen/rare.

The overall benefit of getting all Common req cards from Bronze Packs isn’t that significant and will potentially only save up to 160k req points if we assume that you will get a permanent card from every single Bronze Pack. A more reasonable guess is that you will only save a bit less half of that due to the fact that you aren’t guaranteed to get a permanent item from the Bronze Packs and due to the the fact that Silver Packs has a chance to provide req point boosts for both Warzone and Arena.
