Can Social be Social again? Please?

Buddy and I were talking about this the other day. We use to be pretty good in the halo 2/3 days. I asked him after the first week or two why we kept getting torched. What he said stuck with me. " We keep getting older and these kids are staying the same age"

I have got a lot better at the game since it has came out but man was it a struggle at the beginning. At the end of the day it just takes time to get used to it.

To put it fairly, what is considered social and casual has evolved in a sense in a direction people would rather it not have. They want to experience what they remember social and casual matches were like, and too an extent are stubborn to just accept and adjust that what they thought of casual or social is a thing of the past, and most likely never going to return. As more people enter in this new form of social/casual, it becomes the new norm for this type of playing and your idea of what is considered social and casual is pushed further and further away.

I felt this way growing up off of arena shooters like quake, then late 90’s early 2000’s that all changed dramatically in direction of FPS’s. Arena shooters are practically dead now for the most part and will most likely never truly come back to their formal glory that they once were.

Based on what? No Halo game since Halo 3 has had both ranked and social play. The only argument against social matchmaking is that 343 has said SBMM helps maintain players. But 343 has never managed to retain players.

343 lecturing the community on player retention has as much value as me lecturing people on quantum physics.

So, game developers make bad decisions and we just have to be OK with it.

No thanks.

Dev’s really didn’t have anything to do with it. The community changed the definition of what is considered casual/social play to how social games play out now-a-days.

What you experienced is how it was in the past, but over time it changed into what it is now. Your still stuck in the past though, trying to relive the memories.

343i has absolutely no control how other people enjoy playing too. If people want to play like this, they will.

There definitely isn’t a non-bot playlist currently that feels anything less than super sweaty for me right now, which is just super unfortunate. I don’t have the time, energy, and frankly, talent to play competitively and would just like some relatively laid back playlists where I don’t have to be sitting on the edge of my seat and putting forth maximum effort just to try to break even on my K/D.

I don’t know what’s up with the SBMM. I haven’t tiered in ranked- I frankly don’t want to touch it considering how much I struggle to compete in the regular “social” playlists but maybe I need to tier there to get placed in reasonable matches outside of ranked? Anyway, it does feel like there isn’t a home outside of the Bot Bootcamp for just casually enjoying the game without getting whooped on too hard for me right now.

I don’t claim to be great at the game, I think I’m probably low end of average normally with a few standout games here and there where I might be called good. In older games, though, it didn’t seem like I was ragdolled as fast or easily as I am in Infinite so far. I’d really like to see more offerings for gametype playlists- maybe that would introduce some less intense playlists for players looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.

Again… based on what?

Reach was ONLY social without any SBMM.

You are making up nonsense. Case in point: people in this community telling you that this is bad in this very thread

About 20-30 years experiencing this situation happen over and over starting with Quake 1 online from 1996 to where we are now.

skill based mp only works with CoD.
i’d happily take a random server that has a good connection with everyone, over that. for surs 80% of my matches where against sweaty af players like it was another comp game. but then again, infinite isn’t really casual friendly, so it’s not surprising

Oh. Personal anecdote argument then.

OK, here’s mine… Halo was awesome when it had both ranked and social play and it retained players consistently when it had both. If Halo doesn’t have one of those two, then it gets boring and sucks and people leave. Halo Infinite doesn’t have social play and will get boring and suck in the long run if that’s not fixed.

Tell me then, how is 343i suppose to dictate how serious a person plays in social? Also, where is this line that tells people that this is as serious that you can be, anything more is too much? Socials meant to be for everyone, not just casual play after all.

People do eventually get better at the game as well, some just progress slower then others. So eventually you’re going to have a good deal of decent to good players running around playing in social. That number will slowly grow larger and larger as time goes by.

They aren’t. Social is not supposed to play anything like ranked where 100% of players are sweating it out regardless of their ability. Some people will try, some won’t, and that’s all OK because anyone who wants serious games within the realm of their competitive ability has easy access to ranked play.

That’s the entire point of this thread.

Some of you guys must never have played Halo 2 or Halo 3.

I’ve played all but Halo 4 and 5…
people played differently back then because they weren’t as good back then as they are now. They became better with time. As I mentioned before, everyone eventually improves over time, just some do it faster and better then others. You also have to factor in that now there are more people involved since this has both console and PC players too, which could be a huge factor.

Regardless, they were fairly competitive in those games regardless of mode.

Based. On. What.

I’ve seen bronze players in Halo Infinite. They are no better than the bad players were back in 2004 with Halo 2.

It’s basic human nature to get better at something you enjoy doing over time.

So you are arguing in essence:

  1. Nobody reached their peak Halo skill back in Halo 2 or 3. They just keep getting better ad infinitum
  2. There are no new bad Halo players who start with Halo Infinite just like some bad players started with Halo 2 or 3.

If you come up with a real argument that makes any kind of sense at all, I’ll respond further. Otherwise, I’m out. You are pulling absolute crazy talk out of the air.

Ya, it’s just not fun. I don’t get the point either. If you’re in the mood for tight sbmm that’s what ranked is for. So.what exactly the point of quickplay?

It also seems to rank you in QP based off how you play in ranked so even if you just chill in QP it doesn’t matter.

If they peaked out at halo 2 and 3… Then why are there suddenly better players now? Shouldn’t people not be able to improve any further once they reach their peak?

Regardless, this debate has gone on long enough. I hope you find some way to cope with what social play is all about eventually though. Super doubtful it’s going to change regardless as to what 343i does.

Funny thing is, this isnt even a Halo fault. It’s the gaming community fault, lots of people want to be the “next big gamer”. So trying really hard to be good in a game is the key of that.

I wouldn’t say I am trying to be the next big gamer. I enjoy winning and hate losing so when I play I try to win. Whether it is social or not I try to win.

Next I’ll be seeing people trying to push being friendly in this game like in Team Fortress 2. Crouching and walking around to goof off. Then get their -Yoink!- in a bunch when someone kills them.

“But it’s social, your not suppose to kill me! I’m friendly!”…

Except no one communicates in this game, so it’ll only go on deaf ears lol…
