Connection based matchmaking, which prefers good connections and the match quality is random. MCC used to run like this and Destiny currently does. You could go against a pro level team one game and somebodies drunk uncle next, it’s the epitome of social.
Just play customs, man. OMG
Stop taking it so seriously. Winning is fun.
Just trying to provide feedback, that’s what forums are for. Those who care about the game and want it to last. Thanks for the input.
I honestly think it’s just the settings. In halo 3, the official MLG playlist that was tournament settings had different settings for speed, shield recharge rate, and damage than the standard social playlists. The 2 felt significantly different for this reason. The basic encounters themselves between 2 players felt different across both modes. It’s a more casual experience for this reason. It doesn’t mean a good player can’t go in and still win, outplay, etc etc…but…it kind of shrinks the gap in the fundamental aspect when it comes to gunplay. Which is predominantly what everyone’s doing the entire match. Things were basically slowed down…and to anyone that knows this, it means in the literal sense. The game literally felt pretty slow to move in in comparison.
Yes. And they are right. Apex is an example, and it is utterly awful over there. My KD has always been 0.6, I am lucky to even get just 1 or 2 kills, I rarely get 3. And my highest ever was 7, which I was not able to replicate since season 5. Yet, the SBMM in that game thinks I am good enough to take on predators and masters who do nothing but play Apex 25 hours a day, 8 days a week. Literally 6 out of 10 matches I am getting killed by people who have 20 bomb badges (20 kills in one match) or 4K damage badges. I have tracked this, so you cannot tell me otherwise. How is that skill-based? Right, it isn’t.
For some people just winning isn’t enough anymore…
I feel you man. SBMM is torture for competent players. Playing against copies of yourself or better over and over is mind numbing. SBMM can ruin the best of games and as good as Halo is I don’t hate myself enough to put myself through playing solo unranked. I can drop 50 kill games when playing with my friend who sucks but I barely get double digits and usually go negative when playing alone. The two experiences are vastly different. One is like heaven and the other is pure hell
I hate ranked and i almost never play it, i’d much rather play social with a bunch of randoms with diffrent skills and playsets, i think that makes me a better all around player than someone who sticks with the BR all day and though I do use the BR (Sue me I’m from halo ce and halo2 and 3 so) I don’t alwasys pick up the BR sometimes some other weapon is needed. I will also used anything i can grab to my advantage doesn’t matter if it’s a vehicle or power weapon ,though I tend to ignore power weapons as their limited ammo leaves me empty.
Bruh, I just had a ranked Strongholds game… we won it 250-2. Don’t know what to tell you.
No, no, no. This thread is what is wrong gaming today. Complaining about people being sweaty when they are literally just playing the game. What this all boils down to is you want to be matched up with lesser ranked players so you can win more because you can’t handle losing.
The whole idea wanting to play lesser ranked players for your own benefit is just selfish and lazy. You can’t handle losing so you would rather have make a change to pass a new problem onto someone else. You or someone else can come back with as technical or insult laidened of excuse as you’d like but the true fact is, those you call sweaty, or try hards are just playing the game just like you and are either better than you or better than you like them to be, and you want to beat up on newer lesser rank players.
And oh well that your, not so good, buddies are getting lit up because of your rank. So again, you’d rather be pulled down to their level so that your group can excel at the expense of others. This is that selfishness that I mentioned earlier. Make it someone else’s problem, just so long as it isn’t yours because I bet new players think it’s awesome that they are being matched up against and Onyx level player.
I have not had chill times in scocial…
Ever
I agree 100%.
If 343 doesn’t change this in some way, it will eventually kill the game for me and send me back to MCC. Right now the only game mode I’m really enjoying is ranked.
All the social modes are absolutely ruined by the strict SBMM. Every game feels the same. Every game feels like a bad version of ranked. BTB is absurdly boring. Playing with friends who aren’t your exact skill level is a terrible experience for everyone.
Right now the only way to have a chill time in social would be to make a new account every time you want to play.
Random / Connection based MM is not the answer.
Skill is a normal distribution… and if you are a good player on the right hand tail of the curve… there is a lot of area under said curve to your left. So random just serves you game after game of cannon fodder to chill against.
Without knowing the exact shape of the curve… someone at base Onyx (1500) will have 95%+ of enemies ranked below them. And the average of those enemies will be Gold 6. That’s a lot of chill.
And if you run with a skilled buddy or two… well that’s a lot of streamable content coming up.
We need SBMM. Of some sort.
But I also think we need to change the mindset of the social games. The problem is that the game is set up to be sweaty. The maps, spawns, sight lines, weapon placements, equipment, power areas, etc… are all carefully honed to promote competition.
So… change up the maps. Make them more open and silly. Have more weapon spawns. Take away the focal point of power weapons / equipment. Add in game types / rules that are more fun.
Make it multi-team. Straight away that takes the muscle memory of map control right out of the game. You are outnumbered two to one… so just get out there and shoot people.
If you want less SMBB… have some sort of dynamic handicapping in-game. If someone is struggling give them better weapons… boost their shields… or give them OS off spawn. If someone is dominating nerf them a bit (eg. fry their shields after a multi-kill).
Keep the games close… but more random. The fun will then come back into it.
But why do we need such strict SBMM in social that onyx players only ever match other onyx players?
I am in onyx, and I have friends that span the skill range of bronze through platinum. The way SBMM works in this game, I have no way to play with them where any of us can have fun. It’s miserable for all of us. Even BTB puts us in lobbies that are incredibly sweaty because of my rank. Why one Onyx player has to completely skew an entire 24 player lobby is beyond me.
There’s gotta be a better solution than the current system.
SBMM is not strict at all. 9 out of 10 matches i got are completely one-sided, because one entire team clearly outskills the other or because 1 player clearly outskills everybody else and dominates the match.
And when on a rare occasion i got an competative match, then the skill level within both teams clearly differs, so often the best player feels he needs to cary his team and thus can’t have some fun without hurting the team.
I don’t know how strict it is… but Onyx players should be matched with other Onyx players. Low Onyx could still get Diamond…
But if you are mid to high Onyx that is tricky. There is no way someone with an MMR of 1800 should pair off against Gold or Plats. The skill gap is huge.
Square peg. Round hole.
Ideally the SBMM will match the teams. As best it can - there are so many variables involved in what makes a group of players function as a ‘team’.
But in regards to your team… you are the big fish. You have to expect to carry and protect them. Your lesser team-mates - they have to expect to play the support role (ie. try not to die too many times).
I’m not sure how you can structure a game where they can hold their own against the enemy and not have you completely and utterly destroy everyone. Fun for your team means misery for the opposition.
It’s just more square pegs.
The answer, I think is multi-team. Shorter games. Silly maps and weapon set ups. Alternative scoring mechanisms (eg. halve the score of your best player and double the score of your weakest). In game handicapping of players (influenced by the team scores). Anything but serve up competitive Slayer and expect people to chill.
Essentially - if you are an Onyx wanting to play with a bunch of Golds and Plats - the game needs to make you a gold/plat. Bring you down to their level. Take away your shields. Stop you from picking up power weapons and equipment. Put an identifier on your head so the enemy know who you are. Double the score for killing you. etc.
Can you provide an explanation to that sentence?
Just my opinion
I dont think that SBMM should be used in the social playlist. First priority should be connection/ping of the players.
I play a lot of social matches. If the team is good, im playing the objective of the match.
If i play with a lot of player who dont know what to do, then im just playing for fun, getting kills, but im not going for the objective. Because if i am the only one who tries to capture a flag, im pretty sure that im killed half way before im just near the flag.
Ranked, on the other hand should have the priority on skill based MM, but also in ranked, i would prefer better connection / ping over skill based MM.
Every game is sweaty as heck
The apparent premise is that it’s bad for less skilled players to occasionally get stomped in social. I disagree entirely. This is what ranked is for. If you are bronze and hate getting dumpstered, just play ranked where it never happens.
Social is supposed to be something different than ranked. If it isn’t, then just put a rank on everything.
Halo 2 and 3 each had both ranked and social, and it was absolutely fine. No game since Halo 3 has had both (Reach briefly had a ranked arena mode but it was short lived).
Social should be connection based or very loose SBMM. Ranked should be ranked.
