Can I Still Play Halo 2 on PC?

I’m looking to buy Halo 2 for PC, I just want to make sure I can still play it without any problems. I’m only interested in single player, multiplayer populations don’t concern me unless it affects the game overall for some reason.

You can still play the single player campaign, however the servers for the multiplayer shut down some time ago, so if you are looking to get all of the achievements your only option is a LAN party.

I read that there might be issues playing MS Vista era games on Windows 10, is there any validity to this claim?

Personally speaking, I encountered no issues whatsoever, though that isn’t to say other people won’t experience any.

Are you buying the game as a download or as a CD? If CD, then hopefully it’s a new copy because the product key was designed to have a 5 installation limit but that might or might not still be enforced. Also I’ve had problems installing software from older discs on Win 10 machines because Microsoft left out some of the safety checks from previous Windows versions but I still have Halo 2 for Vista running on a Win 7 desktop. I don’t know what the current status of Games for Windows Live is but I was able to earn achievements as recently as 2017.

I was going to buy the disc. I backed out of it because of some of the reviews I read on Amazon. They made it sound pretty lousy to try to play. I’ll just have to settle with playing the game on MCC.

It’s a lazy port that was a blatant effort to get people to “upgrade” to Vista even though with a bit of tweaking it would work with XP. However it was and still is to this day the last mainline Halo game for the PC until whenever MCC installments start to arrive. I really wanted to play the game but didn’t want to buy a Xbox at the time plus in hindsight it gave me some of the rarer Halo achievements out there. They count toward my overall Xbox Live score but don’t show up on my Waypoint service record.

Okay 343, first off I wasn’t even showcasing something that encouraged hacking. The project cartographer team has a strict no hacking policy, they stated this as soon as you create an account and login to the game. And second, no one ever said I was discussing modding the game on console or PC. The dude asked if there was a way to still play Halo 2 on PC and I gave him a straight forward answer with a reliable source. And you of all people should know that PC is the home for the modding community for games. This includes Halo 1 and 2 for PC. And now that MCC is coming to PC there’s no choice but to face discussion about modding the game since it’s on the superior platform for video games. So you guys just backed yourselfs into a corner. And since you guys are so against modding content on PC then why are you guys working with the ElDewrito team for the PC release?

Hey man, don’t take the block personally. I appreciate your original advice; I will have to consult my options. After reading up on it, I will most likely wait until the MCC PC release.

For future note, if you have an issue with any aspect of forum moderation then please take it up with the appropriate moderator or a member of the moderation team.

While the discussion of future modding support is ok, as is discussing games with / stemming from official modding tools (like Installtion 01 and Halo Custom Edition), discussion of mods that fall outside this or that break Xbox Live Terms of Service is not allowed here on Waypoint. That 343 are working with certain teams still doesn’t make it ok to discuss that game
