Does anybody else miss that being a thing? Things like those jokes only the players will understand just makes games more memorable and great we need something like this again!

Sure, right after I get out the ban hammer and ban you from halo 3.
This used to keep me rolling.
I played Halo 3 rather late so when I found out that you had to do the Vidmaster Challenges in order to get the Recon Helmet I was going to do it even on the day of my brother’s wedding (Have 7 XP on the 7th day of the 7th month). Then I saw that only Bungie could distribute it and they weren’t going to distribute it anymore.

Unfortunately Recon in Halo 3 is now impossible to unlock as 343i Locked it from being earned. Before that however you had to complete every Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST Vidmaster Challenge. Which are very difficult achievements. It was also rewarded to all Bungie employees and other people for inspiring emails and content. So in short, no moar reconz. 
I miss it so much. I loved the day when everyone got Recon and the new thing was “I can haz flaming head?”
I bought Halo 3 used at Gamestop 4 years ago and I had Recon unlocked from the very beginning. Not sure how lol
