Halo hasn’t had much luck lately.
Halo 5 was a huge disspointment for many people, and many people are calling on 343 to bring Halo back to its original feel. That feeling of desperation, and struggling against all odds is what made the original halo games a blast to play. From the Covenants first attack on Harvest, to the Fall of Reach, all the way to final battles on the Ark, many people want a feeling similar to the original trilogy rather than the current Forerunner style story.
Halo Wars 2 seems to be doing exactly that. I, personally, have tried to stay away from Halo news because I want to play the new game with little knowledge about the story.
However, various trailer such as the Atriox trailer, and even the release trailer sent shivers up my spine. Seeing this one lone Brute take down 3 Spartans, it seemed almost impossible.
Halo Wars 2 seems to go back to its roots by:
- Presenting a foe that is equally, or more powerful than humans. - Having that feeling of being up against all odds. In the trailers, we see Red Team being forced to fall back, by a single Brute, as well as a good view of Atriox and his Banished force. Just like in the original trilogy, we are presented with an overwhelming force. - The units in the game also feel more traditional. We are shown Marines, ODSTs, tanks, hornets, and other original vehicles. Although there are new vehicles, they personally don’t feel new. - It also seems to have a militaristic feel to it, and seems more serious when compared to Halo 5, in my opinion. These are just a few things I noticed. I am personally very excited for Halo Wars 2, and can’t wait to see what 343 has in store for us.
What are your thoughts? Can Halo Wars 2 revive Halo? Are you excited? Do you disagree with me or my points? Feel free to share what you think!
I’m sure Halo Wars 2 will be a fun game in many ways, and I look forward to it. I also think it’s great that it’s returning to the look and feel of classic Halo while implementing some 343i things rather than straight up go be 100% 343ified.
That being said, it won’t bring Halo back to life. It would be ludicrous to think that the game will sell as well as Halo 5 or any other main Halo game, especially since it’s a spinoff of a different genre. The original Halo Wars was great, but it sold, what, 2-3 million copies? That’s nothing compared to Halo 2, 3 and Reach. Since Halo Wars 2 is a sequel to that, the numbers will likely be similar. Sure, the game is on PC, which will attract many people, but not enough to outshine the FPS games and bring the series back to life.
I don’t play “Halo”, so I don’t know. I’m a Halo Wars player. However from what I’ve observed, it seems that public opinion on 343’s Halo is pretty divided. But from an objective stance, the last great Halo game that was released was Halo Reach. My reasoning is that it garnered critical acclaim and minimal criticism compared to any of 343’s Halo games. That said, I don’t think that Bungie is inherently better than 343. Look at Destiny. They came up with the idea of Halo and were able to release multiple beloved games before the idea became stale. The reviews of Reach were most certainly marked by nostalgia and the emotional aspect of it being Bungie’s last Halo game. 343 inherited Halo which, while it had a large following, had fallen out of the spotlight when it comes to innovative gaming. Thus, their games garnered lower ratings than the initial Halo games. That’s not to say that Bungie didn’t have games that were subject to critisicm… Halo 3: ODST being a prime example.
What I’m trying to get across is that nothing can “revive” Halo. It’s a stale idea. Whether 343 had taken over earlier or Bungie never let go of the franchise, it all comes to the same conclusion. Halo Wars is a much different idea than Halo, yes, but with that reasoning, how could Halo Wars revive Halo? If someone plays Halo Wars and enjoys it, that doesn’t mean that they’ll go try out the main Halo series games and enjoy it.

I was right with you until this.thats like saying nothing could revive Star Wars after the prequels.

ODST’s crime was being $60.
If you like Halo Wars, I recommend a game called Command and Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath.
To OP:
No, I don’t think HW2 will revive Halo because it is a RTS. Every time I’ve met a Halo player who didn’t like Halo Wars it was because “I don’t like just watching the fighting”. A shame, HW2 is really good. So was HW1. Terribly underrated because of their genre.
I’m certain most people who criticized the original didn’t even play it for more than 15 seconds. Ah well, can’t win em all.

I have no excitement for Halo Wars 2. Whilst I’m a Halo fan of 15 years, I’m not an RTS fan, I played Halo Wars and tried to like it but could not. I will not buy Halo Wars 2, but I’m open to other genre options. A third person RPG Halo would be great imo.
Halo Wars 2 will not revive Halo, it will service RTS fans, nothing more imo. I don’t think an RPG will revive Halo either, but like Halo Wars 2 it gives fans of other genres a Halo game in a style they enjoy. I posted on Bungie years ago that Halo would fall on hard times the moment MLG got involved.
Look now, We have pro players designing or giving input to Halo, and it shows. The pro community whilst important, is not the masses that buy the game for fun. I believe that is the main issue. If 343i make the game fun again, they’ll revive Halo.
Halo has and always will have its place in the gaming landscape and I for one can’t wait for Halo Wars 2 but I do not think Halo will ever reach the highs of popularity it hit when Halo 3 was released though, no matter how good future games are.

It is a shame that nobody gives it a chance…they see RTS and Halo in the same sentence and immediatly call in a “dumbed down” version of insert favorite RTS here, without really giving it a chance. Halo Wars is so much more but alas born into a world of people with attention spans of mites…Halo is not the only title out there that suffers from this, every major publisher is having a hard time keeping peoples attention for more then a month.

Indeed. It’s a shame, Halo’ll probably go the way of the dodo just because people have the attention spam comparable to that of a gold fish.

It’s not down to the attention span of a gold fish, or not giving it a chance. Stop being so insulting to your fellow gamers. I bought Halo Wars, I’m not an RTS fan, but I’m a Halo fan, so I tried it, despite the dislike for the RTS genre. I did not like it, but my son loves it.
I decided there and then I would not play another RTS. We all prefer different things, and that’s all there is to it. I play shooters, third person RPGs and hack and slash mostly, others will have RTS, turn based combat etc. If they want to attract a wider Halo fan base they need more genres.
Players may try free betas etc, but most gamers I know won’t buy games in a genre they don’t like. Another example is setting, I’m a Battlefield fan, but I won’t buy BF1 because of the setting, I don’t like WW1. There are many reasons players don’t buy certain games.
To say it’s because they have the attention span of a mite or goldfish is just insulting.
