Can Cryengine 3 be used to make a 2d game ?

I made a thread yesterday talking about trying to get a meeting with Microsoft Game Studios.

From what I gathered from reading the replies I got, I started looking into what kind of engine I could use to make the game.

I am really interested in using CryEngine 3, but I don’t know if it can be used to make a 2d side scroller =(

If I could use CryEngine 3 to make a 2d side scroller, then I could really be able to devote a lot more time into making the game.

ps To give people some context the game would be a mix of Metroid, Halo, and Gundam. But it would be a completely original work.

Also when the first level of the game is done, and after I have it all legally protected with copyright, trademark, and patent protection, I will try hard to be able to have a small booth at e3 2013.

And Microsoft could come by and if Microsoft would want to get a business deal started, I would be more then happy to talk to them first before anyone else =)

Do you even know how to make a game?

I imagine this place would be a better place to ask.

Why would you use one of the world’s most beautiful engines to make a 2d game? Sounds like a waste IMO.

First of all, I’ve got to say that Unreal 4’s tech demo kills Cryengine 3 in every possible department, I can’t wait until consoles can run it.

On topic, there are a lot of really good-looking sidescrollers. and he should be able to develop his game however the hell he wants. If he’s concerned about the feasibility of something like that, I’m sure it can be done. If you can make a sidescroller out of Minecraft, you can make one with just about any actual game engine.

Because of that very fact, all of the CryEngines offer the possibility to make photo-realistic environments and character model’s.

In my opinion Unreal Engine 3 doesn’t look as good as CryEngine 3.

Also a 2d side-scroller would be much easier to make, compared to a 3d game.

The game I am going to start making would be a 2d game, but it would look really amazing, and it would have a AAA quality feel to it in every-way.

I’m not gonna spend a whole bunch of my time and money making a junky game. I’m going to make sure that it is a quality game.

And getting a partnership with Microsoft Game Studios would allow for the game to become a AAA quality 3d FPS/MMO game.

ps A 2d side-scroller would also be much easier to have ready for e3 2013.

Whoa, slow down man, small steps. All you have currently is an idea, thinking about E3 already.

Go big or go home haha.
But seriously, I’d set my sights a little lower.

> Whoa, slow down man, small steps. All you have currently is an idea, thinking about E3 already.

I already have a model of the main unit that would be in the game, and the story arc worked out.

I just really need a good game engine to make the game.

I’m pretty sure I could have a playable demo ready by e3.

And e3 would be a very good place to show off the game, it also is the most likely place I could get Microsoft’s attention.

I was referring to Unreal 4.
(by the way, that ENTIRE video is in-engine)

Try PAX East, Prime or maybe even RTX, E3 isn’t for to indie developers

I know . . =)

I was just using Unreal Engine 3 and CryEngine 3 as current generation engines that could be compared.

Unreal Engine 4 does look very nice, and from what was said about how easy and accessible it would to developers, is very interesting, but it really is only available to big developers at the moment.

I don’t think there is a free version of it for small independent developers.

I do live on the East Coast, so I will consider that more.

I thought e3 first because, e3 seems to be the biggest expo to show off a game, it seems to get the most coverage at of all the other expo’s.

If PAX East is close to were I am, I definitely will try and go there.

And I thought e3 was for all types of developers . . That’s pretty sad that it isn’t =(

Would it have 3d models on a 2d style map or would it be fully 2d, like retro pixel games? Just curious :stuck_out_tongue:

E3 would be much more expensive just for the badge and plane ticket alone, now a booth, would be really expensive

It would be a 2d side scrolling shooter, with HD character models and HD backgrounds.

> E3 would be much more expensive just for the badge and plane ticket alone, now a booth, would be really expensive

Really . . =( I knew it would be expensive just to get to e3, but I thought a badge and a small booth would cost under $2000.00
