Is it possible to patent a game mode? Like forge? Because i really want 343 to just so games like…cod…dont try and take it because to me forge is one of the best parts of halo
There is no point because there are so many ways a map editor can be like.
Also CoD 4 had a map editor.
They could but it would just encourage other devs to innovate and improve a map editor they’re making so people would be like; “This is better than Halo’s”, might as well make the other devs copy as much as possible and make it not as good as Forge.
They ALL the rights to the Halo series. Activision is greedy enough not to make a copy pasted rip off of Forge World because that would mean lawsuits and they just love making money any way they can.
Besides, ideas and staples of gaming series in the industry are replicated and modified to be used in other games. Usually with it’s own twist to make it stand out. There is nothing wrong with doing this.
I fundamentally disagree with that idea.
No because Bungie already would have when they created it years before Halo was even made.
They could have a copyright on the name Forge, but there’s no way they could stop other games from having map editors. Halo wasn’t even the first game to have a map editor. If CoD has a map editor, 343 can’t do anything about it.
Some games would make excellent use of a map editor. Star Wars Battlefront is one example.
Patents can’t be too general, if they want to patent “Forge” then it would take several. Competitors should be innovating around the idea anyway, that’s what is best for the consumer. If someone patents a METHOD for doing something (it’s a method for doing something, not an idea) then someone else has to engineer around it.
If anything I would hope 343 would expand the use of Forge on other halo titles or the next Halo Wars. I can easily imagine parts for UNSC frigates and other space vehicles used in a forge environment where you can build your fleet, or command vessel. It would make a great 4x game if you just consider say the star map from Mass Effect and the space empire builder from Endless Space crossed over into a Halo title and married to Battlefront.
Oh to dream.
To late to patent. You can’t patent something that’s been released for over 5 years
This thread is pointless, sure they could patent it.
But all they have to do is alter once little thing and your good to go
They couldn’t patent the concept, but it would have to be a direct and blatant ripoff in order for them to claim that someone stole the exact idea of Forge from them (such as locations, objects, etc). In-game map editors have been around for a long time. A very long time. They’d have no grounds to claim they are the first.
They wouldn’t want to anyway as Forge < Map editor.
They could but I doubt they will.
One does not simply copyright a game mode or game mechanic.
> Some games need a new title. Star Wars Battlefront is one example.
Fixed, although I fully agree with what you said.
It’s a map editor. 343i did not create the concept of an in game map editor. Heck, they didn’t even come up with the concept of forge. What’s next? Should 343i patent shooting?
I dont think they can tho because Forge was a BUNGiE it Originated from one of their original games Marathon. So i dont think a new company can patent the name of a map editor that BUNGiE made back in the days of Marathon.
