What is camping? Is it just playing defensively, or is it more than that? Some people seem to think than any strategy that doesn’t invole dying twice a minute counts a camping. Is sitting back with a Sniper Rifle camping? Is defending your Flag with a Shotgun camping?
And secondly, is there anything wrong with camping? Isn’t it a valid and often effective strategy? If camping is just playing defensively, then doesn’t that require at least as much, if not more, skill as playing aggressively? If camping is hiding round corners with a Bolt Shot, doesn’t the necessary patience count as skill?
I suspect the reason many players despise camping, or at least playing defensively, is because they lack the necessary patience and self-discipline to do it. Of course, such players would deny this if it were true.
I’m probably going to recieve a lot of abuse for my stance on this subject, but I would very much like to see a civil and logical debate on camping, and not the usual “I hate campers”.
It’s quite a grey area isn’t it? For me the only time it’s annoying is when it’s cheap, for example, active camo/crouching beside a weapon drop with a boltshot. This annoys me but it works for the aggressor so who am I to complain really. They wait for the unsuspecting victim and, surprise! Like I said if it works then why not, but it is cheap. I guess this sort of tactic I would call camping.
Defending a section of the map is not camping IMO.
When should trying not to die be criticised?
I would rather have defensive players that break even or go positive with k/d on my team than overly aggressive players that die a lot and have 0.5 k/d.
Objective is different, do what you need to do to defend our base/flag or whatever I’m not going to complain. Of course you also need the offensive types to score as well so it’s about balance.
In conclusion, defensive player/camper on your team is no problem. Camper on the other team I HATE YOU!
-IMO there is a difference between playing defensively and camping. You can play a game defensively the whole time without ever hiding or sitting still and staring radar. Camping is playing defensive, but playing defensively doesn’t automatically mean camping.
-IMO camping is a valid strategy. Right or wrong i couldn’t tell you. From what Ive noticed most campers do so because they aren’t as comfortable going head to head with people. And campers typically don’t recognize map flow or when to push/hang back… they just camp
I don’t camp because it isn’t very fun. I haven’t been in many situations where it was necessary and if everyone did it no one would ever see anyone. I also find it hard to assist my teammates when I’m camping. Some people may like it but to each their own.
And again, just my opinion but patience doesn’t count as skill. It counts as patience. I could be the most patient person in the world and lack the ability to shoot and run at the same time effectively.
Hmmm, me personally… I just hate those that sit at corners with a BS/AC… or K/D harvesting with any weapon or AA on objective usually AC or PV to DMR/Sniper camping… what I hate most is whole team camping on Flags… but I stopped playing CTF cause of all the BS… so it don’t matter.
Some claim that camping may be a legit strategy, but there is a diff. between defending, and camping… Defending= your protecting something, you have a reason to be there… Camping, well its camping… set up your tent and take pot shots at ppl.
Edit: there is no reason for a whole team to be guarding a flag.
Sitting in a corner with AC and BS and not moving for the entire match, that is camping and it’s not a fun way to play.
Defending a section om the map is not camping, for as long as you move a bit.
Kill hording is legit bro :3
Camping isn’t playing defensively. In terms of Halo I think it’s when you have an extremely cheap weapon &/or armour ability & decide to watch your radar & sit in a corner or increasingly obscene places during the match for very long periods of time to get maybe 1 or 2 kills. I still don’t know why people do it as you’ll never improve in the game.
> Kill hording is legit bro :3
Not kill hording, kill harvesting… going to objective to raise k/d… some don’t even worry whether they win or lose just how many kills they get. Grifball would be/is alot better if not for the lag… seen some as high 80-90 kills.
When you sit somewhere, not moving and crouched, you look like a bum who’s camping. And what’s sad is… when I kill you, you return to that exact same position in that same exact spot. You even sprint towards it with no intention of shooting anyone until you get there.
As much as it infuriates me, the fact is that it is part of the game.
As such, we need to adapt instead of cry about it.
Camping is supremely defensive and negative.
And generally speaking, I believe that a coordinated positive strategy can beat campers.
343i cannot do anything about campers other than remove scoped weapons.
And unless ALL parties in a match argue to an unwritten non-enforceable code, the practice will continue.
Its a legitimate strategy. People can complain all they want, it is a strategy. now if only it wasn’t so easy in Halo 4.
Well, i hate camping in all ways… Yes, is legit its strategy and blablabla but i hate it.
When i finish a game 280-260 is a very estrategic game but not a good game in my opinion.
When 343 launch the CSR playlist we can know the real H4 campfest…

People can complain about it all they want, but it’s a valid tactic and there is absolutely nothing anybody can do to stop it.

On Ragnarok (RED):
Blast from the man cannon into the stream at the rock arch, Run up the hill to the left and crouch behind the rock - then wait.
Soon, the BLUEs come through the opposite defile and you can DMR away to your heart’s content.
Now, is this camping?
It could be construed as such - however, by holding that position you are denying enemy infantry access to that part of the map and holding off their advance.
So is it not ‘map control?’
Of course their Mantis will cook your goose.
The primary reason that camping gets a bad wrap is that it has the potential to be incredibly effective while appearing to require a low skill of maintenance.
Somebody who kills you while standing still/crouching is not necessarily considered a camper, especially if he moves after the kill. The most common situation for a gamer to be labelled a camper is in the event of obtaining multiple kills from the same location. I don’t care if someone is just sitting somewhere on the map. It only becomes maddening the moment he kills me for the second time. For this small windowed scenario, the score between the camper and I is 2-0 in the camper’s favor; effective indeed.
Campers are always labelled either a) Stupid or b) cheap/cheaters. Stupid campers are campers whom are constantly found sitting still in an obscure location and are easy prey for experienced gamers. These “Stupid Campers” are good for a laugh and a K/D boost but are no bother to anyone but their teammates. The “Cheap Campers” however are usually skilled gamers who have mastered the art of gaining kills for their team while separated from the action. These gamers are the object of much ridicule due to the appearance of “just sitting back and taking pot shots” when in reality, there is nothing easy about their tactic and they are doing anything but taking pot shots. The best campers alternate between a few prime spots and wield long range, high powered precision weapons and succeed by keeping their enemies guessing just long enough to line up a successful headshot. Being able to hang in the backfield, avoid detection, and (most importantly) have a near perfect hit percentage are by no means “cheap” skills.
The average gamer’s frustration with campers is almost wholly due to the gamer’s inability to win the scenario. In essence, they are mad because the camper is simply better.
