What did you think of the halo 4 campaign gameplay wise? It seemed more linear than previous installments, but the sense of scale wasn’t diminished. The variety of the missions was great to me and I felt powerful again as master chief. My only real complaint is that the end boss fight was too call of dutyish. But what do you think?
Dawn - doesn’t exist to me
Requiem - has lots to offer but the gameplay is nothing new
Forerunner - great AI interaction
Infinity - It’s Hell and it’s not very memorable to me
Reclaimer - it’s fun doing the skips but it lacks scale
Shutdown - I don’t remember much of it ever since I found out about the level skip
Composer - pretty engaging
Midnight - pain in the -Yoink-
Overall, I only find 4/8 levels to be replayable. The campaign is mediocre.
Seeing how powerful the Didact was, any fight between him and the Chief would have been incredibly one sided. Plus, i think the boss fight would have de-valued his presence and turn him into a pansy. The only memorable boss fights i have had in FPS was the one with Tartarus in Halo 2 and in Metroid Prime, which was a long time ago.
Speaking of the Didact, i felt he spent too much time inside of his Cryptum and it felt like a tease/waste of opportunity. It would have been nice to see more of him in the game. Dialogue used for him was good IMO.
Then a few glitches on Reclaimer (Thomas Lasky disappearing in the Mammoth, Spartan IV w/ sniper rifle running into a wall, being sent a checkpoint instead playing the intro cut scene). Textures take a hit up close and look pretty bad in order to make everything else look excellent. The lack of theater mode and scoring are also downsides.
Otherwise, i really enjoyed Halo 4’s Campaign. The ending was really sad, i didn’t expect to see Cortana killed off. I felt as though the Halo universe was actually connected to the gamer for once; something of a disconnect with the Bungie games. Dialogue and characterization was better in this game thanks to facial animations displaying emotion. While we can’t see his face, even the stoic Chief says more in the first level then the entire first three games!
The overall environments had the epic sense of scale and alien wonder, which 343 didn’t skimp on and delivered the goods. Speaking of alien, the Covenant return in all their familiar glory along with the Promethean class enemies, which break up the monotony of fighting them and are challenging to fight.
The lightning is amazing though some may find the use of lens flares blinding but the character models and the graphics in general are not just amazing for a Halo game, it’s one of the best looking games on the 360.
The music and sound are much improved from the last game with weapons having been re-tooled to sound more realistic but still “Halo”. The music by Niel Davidge is different from Marty’s and some feel that isn’t the same. It would be a discredit to what i believe is a successful effort to give us the Halo 4 soundtrack.
While the MP (War Games and Spartan OPs) is good and full of replayblity as per tradition, it’s in some obvious need of updating and it’s good 343 is doing the weekly, rather than monthly route. Spartan OPs does get old real fast but it is there to provide good exp and a way to relax with friends if competitive MP has grown stale.
One major issue I have with the campaign:
disappearing weapons
I’m on Requiem and I’m trying to prepare for the 8 snipers easter egg with 11 skulls on.
So far I had no trouble with the first area but the scarcity of checkpoints and disappearing guns at a certain point in the next area are really frustrating me.
