Campaign squad command suggestion

While the campaign squad orders are useful in their current form, I’d like to be able to give specific orders to specific squad members. Because, it is sometimes quite difficult to ensure that the right teammate picked up the weapon or drove the vehicle I wanted him or her to. I think that it would be much easier if you could give individual orders to your teammates, rather than continually giving pick up and drop weapon orders until the correct teammate ended up with the weapon.

(Rough draft) Example:
Press up and hold on the D-pad to bring up a command menu, then select a character, then select pick up weapon, the menu closes and your selected character picks up the weapon.

I also think that a similar method could be used to improve the squad movement options. Instead of the “entire” squad rushing to an area that I would have prefered only one of the squad to go to, I’d have liked to have been able to choose where each squad member moved to.

I’m not sure whether it is still possible to make changes to the campaign squad AI but I’m interested in your opinion on this.

So almost like Mass Effect. I just rather 343 make the AI a little smarter. I can’t count the times when I order Osiris to attack a knight and they walk right up to it and get killed. Or I’m down and they walk as slow as possible to me.

I must admit I haven’t played Mass Effect but I assume that it uses a similar command system?

Regarding your example of the knight, I think that that scenario would have ended better if you was able to send “only” the teammate who was best equipped to kill the knight instead of the whole squad.

What about finding some other way to change grenades instead of left/right on D-Pad.

Then up, left and right on the D-pad can all be assigned to the different squad members, e.g. Tanaka, Buck, Vale and it would be very quick to give individualized commands.

Good idea!
What about using “down” on the D-pad to change grenades, as that appears to be available?

The method for choosing what action a squad member performed could go like this:
Say if you wanted Tanaka to go to an area you’d press “up” on the pad, but if you wanted her to engage a target you’d hold “up” on the pad.

Click for movement commands.
Hold for engage commands.

What do you think?

Mass effect’s controls were great but wouldn’t work for this game cause the whole game would stop to issue these orders. You could order them in to a certain spot for cover, use a special ability to kill an enemy, order them to attack different targets or all at one.

And for the knight Buck had a Scatter shot, vale a Incendiary cannon, and tanaka a Sniper. All 3 walked up to it and had a conversation.
