Anyone feel like the open world campaign just didn’t fit with what we have come to expect?
They should have given us a traditional linear campaign with definitive levels and the usual focus on story and cut scenes, while keeping the open world for a more general PvE experience.
I’m imagining something along the lines of Fallout 76 where you and your party load into the world with 50 or so other players, and can run missions and activities together while having access to more loadouts, equipment, weapon variants, vehicles, perk trees etc as you play and improve your spartan.
I personally enjoyed the open world and thought it worked well for what we got (minus the lack of biomes), but I do agree to a point if they did more open linear styled missions instead the level design probably could have been not as repetitive and a bit more unique than what we got, but I still enjoyed it either way.
Your last point loading into a world with a bunch of players doing random missions like Fallout sounds like a really good idea and now I kinda want it!

i feel like 343 spent most of their time just getting functional core gameplay working and had no time to create fun levels that connect to the story regardless if its open world or not. As the game went on, it just felt like they didnt even try level design wise because they just needed to ship the game. But atleast the bones are good.
