Which would you prefer in Halo 4?
I prefer Halo 4 to have linear campaign style, but with still that sense of exploration Halo CE offered.

It should be linear to be able to tell a rich story, but there should be plenty of exploration opportunities.
Same as OP. Linear, but let me explore a bit.
> A combination of the two for me.
Open up Halo 4’s (and beyond) worlds a bit more something similar to ODST and CE. Many gamers want to explore the gamer space these developers create because we don’t know what to expect and when this is limited, it really takes away from the immersion. I don’t think any sophisticated gamer (i apologize if this sounds like a generalization) likes to have their hands held every second, it’s only human nature to explore that in which we have no knowledge of.
Reach had potential but we hardly went beyond it’s jagged mountains. We didn’t visit any oceans, vast deserts, forests etc and while it was consistent experience, it also lacked variety IMO. It was beautiful world and i give credit to Bungie for making it but i digress. This is about Halo 4, not Reach.
We all know that 343 is crafting locales, species, weapons, and worlds we haven’t seen before in Halo. Wouldn’t it be awesome if that sense of exploration returned, that the world that our Master Chief inhabits is completely foreign and unknown? At the very least, it gives the players more room to drive the Warthog and to find new Easter Eggs that the developers build so that we may find them (or not).
Let’s have a set path for each level, but let’s put more emphasis on open world. Let’s cherish every single part of the geometry that level designers and programmers build for us, the player to play in. It would be a waste of art and time if we just skipped past all that in favor of explosions and short fire fights that push us along without appreciating the world around us and that my friends, is a real waste.
I believe this is the topic you want to talk on

both
Enough space to flank the opposition.
linear. but make it like CE, where you can approach situations in multiple ways. dont force set pieces (Halo 2 anyone) down our throats. scatter them about and let there be different ways to approach it.
a couple levels like halo (on ce) and a pseudo-odst freeroam, with a few more linear levels that do give us space (like AOTCR or the covenant or the ark)
linear, but not scripted and small environments.

Like Halo 3?

I didn’t understand, you mean Halo 3 was scripted?

some parts of halo 3 were great. many areas in the covenant and the ark gave you plenty of room to manouver. though i did feel choked during the first 4 levels of the game.
Both. ODST style, still had an objective just weren’t restricted to a single route. Plus made finding terminals harder, and made enemy encounters much more random!
A little of both. I wouldn’t mind if there was some kind of overworld a la ODST where we traveled to our next mission sometimes. ODST worked good, but I don’t know how it would work outside of the flashback scenarios.

Free roam. I spent ages on Halo 3 ODST just simply wandering around aimlessly, shooting Covenant. Free roaming also adds to the replay value. I’ve spent hours (sometimes days) on games such as Elder Scrolls, Grand Theft Auto, Fallout, Dead Rising and Assassin’s Creed.
I never really liked free-roam. I think it would kinda ruin the experience for me.
