I loved the campaign, as far as story and the missions. However, I feel they could have done so much more.
Theater mode for campaign. This should have been incorporated and I hope they can add it in.
Scoring. This made the game have extra replay value, especially on coop when you will try to make sure you score more than your friend.
For the large number of coop achievements, they should have included coop matchmaking. It would be a great way to get to meet people and play through the missions on heroic with them.
For being the newest Halo, it is a bit of a let down that so many of the great things from the previous halos were not incorporated.
Entire story was a letdown. SPOILERS AHEAD
- Bringing back Cortana made the emotional impact of Halo 4 (its best attribute) worthless.
- Killed off the head of the Covenant immediately, leading for the Arbiter’s victory to be completely anti-climatic. Would have made so much more sense for Jul to get away, and the Arbiter kills him in an epic sword duel or just the 'ole one-two.
- Focused around a boring character. First mission of Blue Team and Osiris were fine (except for killing Jul), and then all of Locke’s missions on Meridian were useless and boring. I would have rather followed Chief while he was there, then after the two of them fought you could play as Locke during the epic escape against the Guardian. Sangheilios had an awesome everything (except ending) and that was because it wasn’t driven by Locke, he was just along for the ride. His last level was fine.
- There was virtually no Master Chief in a numbered Halo game. If it was called Halo: Guardians I can’t say I’d even give a crap.
- No splitscreen makes a co-op centered game useless… And for a constant 4-player experience, the AI is absolute garbage. 343i should have looked at Republic Commando, which release over a decade ago.
I could go on, but those are the main points.
You’re right about the co-op matchmaking, don’t they have that in Halo MCC? I think they do but never tried it I always just do it co-op. No scoring and par times is immensely disappointing, but I wouldn’t have minded if they replaced it with some other mechanic or something. Would have also loved to use the skulls like in Halo 2 and 3 when you found them. Considering there’s no Oddball yet in Halo 5, this worries me that it’ll never be included.
It was an alright Campaign. My favorite part was looking around for the hidden Legendary weapons! I think the squad system was a unique aspect, but ultimately I prefer the original style of only one spartan at a time. Plus, my squad mates had awful AI and wouldn’t listen nor keep the weapons I would give them… I think 343 should bring back the Halo 1, 2 & 3 style Marine allies.
And yes, yes, so much yes, they need to do a matchmaking co-op Campaign! It’s awful wanting to play as the other characters, but not having anyone that wants to play the Campaign mode with you.

I agree so strongly with the content of your spoiler. I couldn’t have said it better myself! SO many problems with this campaign.

- I agree that they killed off Jul 'Mdama too quickly, they could have at least given you some sort of “boss fight” against him. The idea of him and Thel 'Vadam going against each other in a final battle to kill off the Covenant would have been fantastic.
- I didn’t really care for Locke in Nightfall and Halo 5 didn’t really do much to improve on the character. The fight between Chief and Locke could have been so much better and I agree with others saying that it was more of a “bar fight” than anything else.
- Exactly. Out of the 12 actual missions, they only gave us 3 with Master Chief? Not only that but when they announced they were reuniting him with Blue Team and you don’t showcase anything that gave them their legendary reputation is disappointing.
- I found it interesting how they were making a big deal about the game being centered on co-op when they got rid of splitscreen co-op. The AI can be ok when it works properly but it’s no replacement to having your buddy next to you. I have one friend that I was able to play co-op campaign with because he’s the only one that the console and a copy of the game. My roommate and I weren’t able to play through together like we have been doing with every release since 2 and that sucks because we had so many memories tied to playing through a game together on release day.
