Campaign lag problem

After I got Anniversary, I started to play the campaign online with a friend of mine after playing some of it by myself. When I started playing the campaign with him, I noticed a HUGE lag problem. I’m not talking about lag like characters jumping all over the place. For example, if I moved the right joystick to the right to look right in the game, it would take a whole second for the game to respond. That goes for any other direction and all other controls (like grenades and shooting). I remember having this problem in the Reach campaign, but since I hated that campaign anyway, I never played it so I never saw this as a problem. Why am I having this problem and how do I fix it?

Things to note:

  1. Ever since I have played Reach, it has said “warning” in my “Upstream Bandwidth” and has NEVER said anything else since I got the game when it first came out.
  2. This lag problem is still there when all of my computers are turned off.
  3. I live in a condo complex (not sure if this has anything to do with it but thought I’d mention just in case).
  4. Here is my connection now at it’s WORST: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1670410704.png
This is with my laptop (with 18 tabs in chrome) and my Blackberry Playbook (4 tabs AND downloading an update) online.
  5. This still happens when I play at night when most people who live near me are offline.
  6. My xbox is plugged into the router with a cable, not wirelessly.
  7. My isp is “Cablevision” which is THE BEST in the area.
  8. I don’t have the results now, but when I tested it at night, it said my ping was about 12ms download connection was 20 mbps and my upload was about 8 mbps

Yeah, your internet is probably fine! this lag problem plagues me and all my friends on Live. other games seem perfect though!

It seems ok to me. I never had a lag problem in Halo 3, and I don’t see why after more than a year, Microsoft hasn’t fixed the problem and even came out with another game with the same problem. If there were no complaints on lag in the Halo 3 Campaign engine, I don’t see why they couldn’t make anniversary work the same way, eliminating lag.

I have also experienced more lag than other campaigns, but I think it probably has to do with using CE’s old code. If you play the old CE on split screen it will lag a little, so adding an extra layer of graphics and new code to allow for co-op over live will put even more stress on it. Thats my theory anyway for why it tends to lag more.

Also, when it lags are you joining someones game or are you hosting the game? Cause when many people join games they tend to experience the most lag, but when they are hosting, they typically experience little to know lag, so maybe you could try hosting the lobby?

  1. Not CE Code because the same thing happens in Reach campaign and some firefight.
  2. Yes it is when I join him.
  3. It shouldn’t matter who joins who. When he joined me he lagged. The HOST of the game won’t lag. But either way both the Host and the “guest” should expirience little lag, especially as bad as it is.

  1. My theory is that the code has something to do with it since it tends to be worse in CEA.

2, 3. Lag is more prominent in firefight and campaign because the networking is different than multiplayer. In campaign and FF, everyone’s actions are synced, through information packets, making everyone see the same thing, so things such as the AI are all in the same place. The drawback is that if consoles dont agree, they have to wait until the problem is corrected, often causing lag. Also, if a person has a weak connection, and their information packets that are sent to the host are lost, then they have to be resent and everyone must wait for the host to sync everyone again, again causing lag. The host doesn’t lag as much (I think) because they are the ones basically running the game everything is based on, so the other counsels have to correct any errors and sync their actions to the host, which causes more stress on your counsel. That may be whats causing non-host lag.

I’ve gotten the “WARNING” for the “Network Status” on Reach as well, but I rarely lag on it. However, I also lag a lot during campaign on co-op. Me and my friend were playing “Two Betrayals” once, but throughout the game, it would lag every frame.

It’s because they lazy-ported the netcode and will always use the old Halo 1 engine as an excuse (why using it anyway? I can care less about 10 years old graphics). And they probably used Halo CEs LAN networking model and transformed it to some online netcode thing so they can say “heh, look, whe have online coop, but we won’t tell you how awful it is, so you have to buy the game first”.

It’s not YOUR (P2P) connection or anything server related, whatsoever. It’s just lazy work of the devs and no one can defend this. Hell, even Halo 3 with a 4 player online campaign runs better.

And btw, there is already a thread about it here

I’ve always believed that the lag wasn’t always due to the connection of the players, but the fact that it’s running two graphics layers at the same time.

Yea I’m sure that the old engine isn’t helping in any way, I’m just saying that it isn’t the cause of the problem, since I’ve had a problem with all Halo online (Reach campaign and firefight) co ops except Halo 3.

Same problem here. Legendary co-op it actually freezes on me. So irritating and I play it offline so go figure. My guess is that it’s the old engine and the new graphics engine couple together and they’re just not working in harmony with each other. Plus I was hoping 343 would iron out the lag in the cut scenes, they’re so not smooth plus compared to the Pillar of Autumn in Reach and the one in Halo CE Anniversary, the Reach Pillar of Autumn looked graphically better.

the only lag i ever seem to find is on Firefight, And even then its only like a slight delay in movement when buttons are pressed etc…So barely unnoticeable.
