Campaign Incomplete

Halo 5’s campaign has been universally panned, I played it through on heroic when I first got the game and later on Legendary Solo for the skulls, intel and achievement’s. I play multiplayer a lot and always check out players service records and stats post game to compare and the vast majority of players haven’t even completed the campaign on any level. Did I enjoy the campaign? It was good but not as good as previous Halo games, was it utter garbage? No far from it, the biggest problem it had was that it was to short and the story was a bit disjointed a lot like Halo 2 and Halo Reach, (Halo 2 and Reach were not short but were definitely disjointed). The actual gameplay and level design was really good, it’s only my opinion but having played all the Halo campaigns through on original release and then the Anniversary re-masters and The MCC, Halo 5 wasn’t really that bad, not great but certainly no total RANK. My point is if the majority of people haven’t played it through how do they know it’s bad, did they play one level and say " This is rubbish, let’s load up the multiplayer" or maybe they just heard it about it on the internet and never even started it or maybe Single Player Campaigns are DEAD and todays gamers just want the instant rush of the Multiplayer experience.

Mate, I played through the campaign twice before I started multiplayer. I’ve spent 2.17:12:02 playing it. Halo 5’s story and campaign were the worst in the series imo, a position previously held by reach. Mechanically it’s sound. There are levels and set pieces I quite like. No one claimed it was Superman 64 or the like. It’s fully functional and has good points, but comparatively I like it far less. My opinion of it has actually improved on repeated playthroughs. You can’t justify claiming that the ‘majority haven’t played the campaign.’ Whether that is the a majority of the players in general or just the majority of people who are vocal about the dislike of the campaign. It’s not a claim you can back up. Personally, I buy Halo games for the campaign and then play the multiplayer till the next one comes along. I care about the campaign and I have every right to be disappointed in Halo 5’s campaign.

Sir, don’t you ever mention Superman 64 again, you hear me? Some things just need to be forgotten, but monsters like you just won’t let it die.

It’s such a shame. After two first levels I was loving it. The gameplay was fresh and fun and we got to see the blue team. I was expecting the story to start picking up soon but it never did. A huge dissapointment but halo 5’s development must’ve been highly problematic and I have faith in 343 to deliever a much more whole experience next time.

As I said, I enjoyed the campaign but it had it’s faults, way to short,to much Osiris,Not enough Blue Team, and score attack should have been there from day one. I just think it is a gaming trend that the campaign/single player is not as popular as it used to be, and like you I always play the campaign through before I go anywhere near the multiplayer, It might be interesting to have a poll on, Did you play the Halo 5 Campaign? I think the results would be interesting,

As I said in the original post, I enjoyed the campaign in Halo 5 but not as much as other Halo games, the other reasons I put in the addendum post are in my opinion a general consensus on some of the problems with Halo 5 campaign and as such should go without saying. Thanks for putting the poll up Cheers. LBC

After Halo 3 it was just such a let down, too short, The story was all over the place and made no sense if you hadn’t read the books and compared to Halo 3 it was too easy, other than that the ranking system was broken, the servers were shocking, firefight was a good addition but again was way too easy, I mean you could solo it no problem, and you have to remember that at the time Master Chief was the biggest gaming icon in the world and he wasn’t in it, people were pissed off, going from the best ever Halo title Halo 3 to Halo Reach was a big let down. Don’t get me wrong I still played it, like I do with Halo 5, it was still Halo and the multiplayer maps were iconic. But a lot of Halo fans also didn’t like some of the game mechanics, now that it’s backwards compatible I may revisit the game and give it a second chance. I did that with Halo 4 campaign on the MCC and thought hey this is really great. C’mon man we’re halo fans we hold more grudges than high court judges. peace out LBC

> By the way, why don’t you like Halo Reach campaign?

(This is not including the whole Fall of Reach novel)

The premise of Halo Reach was very hard to believe. The Covenant managed to sneak pass all security outside Reach’s orbit and land for a while until NOBLE Team reports that the Covenant was on Reach. For a planet that is one of the top 2 most heavily defended Human planets, how did they just miss something this important? Where are the orbital MAC Cannons, like the ones that defended Earth in Halo 2? They just waltz in here, make bases and outposts and spires left and right with little resistance.

(This part I got from a guy on Reddit that I agree with)

None of the characters in this story matter in the slightest, with the exception of Noble Six. What difference would it have made had Noble Team consisted of 4 members instead of 6? There literally would not be a difference.

Carter to boss you around, Jorge to die early, Emile to die close to the end, and you to die at the end. No difference. Nothing Kat or Jun does is of any consequence. They are so useless in fact, that Jun simply up and walks out of the -Yoink- game with no explanation.

The point you mentioned that it feeling disjointed like Halo 2 and Reach(2 is my favorite campaign of all time), so i don’t see the main issue with 5 being like that as long as in the grand scheme of things it pays off.

Personally i found the campaign dissapointing because of 3 reasons
1- story and lore:
the actual campaign was nothing like what was advertised, there was no hunting of the truth and chief wasnt AWOL. So when i went into the game i had these expectations, halo 4 whether you liked it or not had a solid linear story (far too short though) and the emotion was there. Halo 5 just didnt have that. I found myself not engaged in the story whatsoever and i just played through to get to the next mission, trying to find the mission where it picked up but it never did. Jul mdama or whatevrr his name just died. Halsey was there. Halsey wasnt evil anymore. -Yoinking!- elite civil war. Ended. Warden eternal kept gatecrashing. It just was so jumpy and left me with so many questions. Mainly about the whole reclaimers are actuallt AI it makes no sense at all. It -Yoink- on the first 3 halos. If they were wouldnt guildyspark be the reclaimer not chief???
2- blue team/ osiris imbalance. Not enough blue team not enough chief. Nuff said
3- technicallt jarring
found that i just kept running through levels, i had so much mobility and power it was awesome, but the game kept slowing you down to take out EVERYONE until you could advance, so when i had the oportunity i litterslly just sprinted thriugh the whole mission ignoring everyone. Secondly the coop AI are -Yoinking!- dumbbbb and id rather just have died than wait 50 seconds while i watched linda and fred try and walk through the -Yoinking!- eternals legs and die…
Halo 5 has great multiplayer but the campaign is the worst halo ever. I could go on but that is my opinion and experience of it all.

I finished the campaign twice, and while I think the level design and moment to moment gameplay waa not only fantastic but perhaps the best in the series… the story was by far the worst. I also missed some more epic set-piece moment (not instead of the sandboxy, open levels that I really loved in Halo 5 but on top of that). It felt like the only three epic moments in the Campaign were the space elevator (which isn’t even a gameplay element), the Kraken and running down a Guardian. Comparatively, for instance, Halo 4 had the Broadsword sequence, the Ghost-run, the Pelican mission, the Mammoth etc. Really memorable, unique gameplay set pieces is what I missed aside from a story worth a damn. Other than that, Halo 5’s campaign is rock solid. Graphics and gameplay (and certainly level design) are probably the series’ best, as I said.

Actually the reasons are very similar to the reasons I dislike Halo 5’s story and campaign. Only one of the characters shows any actual personality or depth, out of a team of five I found one guy likable. The rest are pretty much stereotypes or about as single dimensional as possible. Particularly in a story billed as a tragedy, one we knew the conclusion of before the game was announced the player/reader/viewer should be able to care about the characters. It’s the only way that their inevitable deaths have meaning. I cared about one character, because he showed some humanity. The next one to die was Kat and I didn’t care one iota about her. I’d been stuck with her in my ear for more than one mission and I couldn’t be forced to give a damn. Jun disappears with Halsey and I don’t care in the slightest. Carter runs the pelican into a scarab and my response was laughter. I was actually laughing at how bloody stupid it was. Really ramming the Scarab with a pelican is your best idea? How about distracting it while I blow the core ala Halo 3? Finally Emile whose only characteristic was 'I’m a -Yoink-" yeah, can’t care there either. If the characters had been better…if they showed enough humanity for me to actually care…than maybe I could have been swept up in the tragedy of it, but that just wasn’t the case. The writers failed.

Most of the level design is a bit dull and far too centered around firefight sections. I was okay with it in ODST, but that was because the game was in part designed to show off firefight. Reach doesn’t have that same excuse and several of those sections felt inferior to me when compared to the similar ones in ODST. For example compare the end of the Sword base level’s section where you fight off the banshees and approaching ships to the much more entertaining sandbox version in ODST. Other than a few sections like the one where you first get the jetpack on exodus, there was nothing new there…nothing that hadn’t been done better before. The only other ‘new’ section was the sabre combat section on Long Night of Solace and that turned into a joke once I figured out how easy it actually was even on legendary. It never really felt fun to me.

In addition the covenant were supposed to be seen as this nigh unstoppable force. You were supposed to feel outmatched and overwhelmed by the numbers and superior technology and that just wasn’t the case. I fought them off in waves despite my near useless teammates. They were supposed to be so superior to the UNSC that we were losing the planet and yet I never lost. I was never forced to retreat. It felt as if the only reason we were losing the war was because of everyone else was incompetent. Six wasn’t even supposed to be a Spartan II and yet he was far more than the covenant could handle. I could actually go on and have in the past, but I’ll just let it lay for now.

Keep in mind I don’t hate the game. I don’t even hate Halo 5, but if I rank the halo games campaigns from 1-7 then it’s just number 6.

Plus one for the musical reference.

> In addition the covenant were supposed to be seen as this night unstoppable force.

Yeah, I can see what you’re saying. Don’t worry I wasn’t about to call you a hater, I was honestly just curious.
