Campaign Flow

So, I’ve been noticing some points of contention on who Infinite should focus on, whether it be Chief, Locke, Arby, Jerome, Atriox, etc. Given all of these characters, I’m interested in seeing what others would see as the ideal flow of focus from one character to another. I’ll drop mine here, for anyone familiar with NieR: Automata, I’m sure you’re aware of how they structured the story, with each of the MC’s given a proper story segment to compound into its climax. I believe Halo should take some inspiration on it, and have a Campaign which starts with Chief’s perspective, finishing it, then unlocking Arby’s perspective during the Campaign storyline, etc. That way, everyone is satisfied with playing whoever they want to play, while incentivizing continued runs to see the full story from all sides. The game is called “Infinite” after all, extra story content would be nice after the Halo 5 Campaign being commonly regarded as a bit of a dumpster-fire (Their words, not mine, I could go without a flamewar, thank you).

Definitely some interesting ideas!

I’ve got an unpopular opinion about Halo 2’s campaign in that I think that dividing the missions between Chief and Arbiter weakens the story. I have pretty much the same opinion about Halo 5, but that’s a lot less controversial. With all that in mind, I’d hesitate to endorse the idea of having a bunch of different perspectives in the campaign instead of really just focusing on nailing Chief’s story.

The idea of unlocking missions that you don’t have to play but can from the perspective of Arbiter or Locke is super interesting, though! If it were implemented as an optional gameplay element one step more integral than an Easter egg, possibly unlocked by finding collectibles in the campaign or something akin to that, I’d be interested.

I’d like the focus of the actual, “You have to play through this” campaign to be 95%+ on MC, ultimately.

Well of course, you don’t NEED to play the other perspectives, you get the whole general gist of the story in the MC playthrough, but if you want to see the rest of the characters’ POV’s, the option is there. The other perspectives will be retreading the Campaign but from another side of the story, save for a possible Covenant/Banished seperate story. To clarify, the first playthrough will be 100% Chief, but once you’re done with that, the option to select a different character’s story will be available to play through the story again from their perspective. As an example, imagine playing the siege on Sunaion again in H5 but as Arby with his POV and objectives. You won’t be accompanying Locke, it’ll be like a completely different mission.

And that’s a pretty cool idea!

I’m not entirely sure I wouldn’t prefer them allocating the development resources it would take to accomplish that into other elements of the game (please, please, please give us a real Firefight mode this time, 343). But assuming that they can give us a full and complete game overall (and they’d better, if rumors about the budget of this game are to be believed!), I’m all in favor of a campaign with those sort of optional “Director’s Cut” style missions. It’s a unique and interesting way to provide players with perspectives that aren’t Chief’s without doing it at the expense of the main narrative.

That’d be cool. I don’t think the fact that H5 focused on other characters besides Chief, it’s just that those characters and story weren’t that interesting.
