I thought that it was confirmed that there would be 4-player co-op; in one of the weekly updates a while back. At the same time I thought it was said that they’d all be Master Chiefs, rather than your own spartan or different in-universe characters.
Don’t quote me on that, I guess. I can’t find info on it on either of the Halo wikis, so it may be something I interpreted from bsangel’s cryptic prose rather than something confirmed.

All playing as the chief would be awesome, no more battling to be host and getting naff covenant weapons if ur not.

I rather enjoyed the novelty of the separate co-op characters in Halo 3. I’m not averse to Covenant weapons either, though; I saw them as merely equal but different.
I think I’d rather that if you play co-op, everyone is their War Games spartan during gameplay. Since the presence of all of these spartans is noncanon anyway. But the multiple Chiefs method is the simplest.
It will probably be 4 player co-op. All Chiefs.
