So I plan on buying the first two Halo games for PC and I’m gonna download patches and stuff if needed. Is there anything I should be aware of? This will be my first Halo experience on PC.
The master server for Halo 2 Vista was shut down a while ago, so you won’t be able to find games on the server list.
Enjoy the campaign experience and if you want to play multiplayer, you’re going to have to LAN with some friends

For Halo CE:
Be sure to update to the latest version (1.0.10 I think?) in order to connect to the multiplayer. If you want to play custom maps, you can download Halo: Custom Edition as well, which is free so long as you have your CD key. If you want to get into mapping and modding, you can also get the official Halo Editing Kit and HEK+ for free as well, but there’s a bit of a learning curve to using them.
Also, be warned, the netcode in Halo PC was designed for extremely poor connection speeds, which means you’ll have to lead your shots a little bit.
For Halo 2 Vista:
If the game asks if you want to download the game while playing, just decline and ask for a full install before playing. Registering for GFWL is a headache, but its still possible. Unfortunately, access to the majority of the game is restricted until you can sign up, so just keep trying or post here if you can’t get it to work. Halo 2 Vista’s master server is offline, and since H2V’s very poor browser doesn’t even have Direct IP connection, you simply cannot play multiplayer online outside of LAN or LAN tunnels. Since Vista’s official modding and mapping tools disclude MOST of the singleplayer content, its not of much interest to most people. Several people, including myself, have worked on creating new singleplayer levels with varying amounts of success. Basically, buy Halo 2 Vista for the campaign.
Basically, what you’re getting:
Halo: PC/CE (grab patch 1.0.10)
-Campaign
-Online Multiplayer Community
-Local Multiplayer
-Custom Multiplayer Maps (CE only)
-Halo Editing Kit (download HEK and CE from one of the many Halo mapping sites out there).
-Halo Editing Kit+ (a community tool that allows you to extract tags from Halo PC/ Allows for creation of singleplayer content).
Halo 2 Vista (patching is irrelevant)
-Campaign (Cairo Station is the only available mission until you register for GFWL
-Local Multiplayer (again, LAN tunnels might be possible, but there’s incredibly little interest in this game.)
-HEK2 (Alongside needing modded versions of Guerrilla to do basic tag edits, there are no available tag extractors, so you cannot create very much single player content.)
Halo 2:

So it may come online and you can get it for free, as…
Halo ce:
DON’ buy it.
Get halo custom edition, its the same but with tons of multiplayer (which is compatible with halo ce) and singlleplayer mods and. maps, all free. You need to get the campaign mapps like those.
Halo online (dewrito/anvil halo):
A halo 3 and halo 4 free mix for pc. Currently unfinished, you should also try.
You can download Halo CE for free. It worked for me and I got the full game! Be aware of viruses though
There’s a LAN tunnel mod for Halo 2 Vista called Project Cartographer. Once installed, you play online via the LAN menu, works great.

Good to hear things like that still exist!
I spent 5$ last week just to get the limited edition copy of halo 2
That game is great but the content on the behind the scenes is top notch!

Sadly, yea. They shut down a few years back. Something about the owner/founder not having time to maintain things anymore so he shut everything down. Kinda the same reason the guy behind the old Halo Charts site shut down
I still play Halo CE and Halo 2 on PC for the campaign’s, I never get tired playing, just buy them !

I donated to Halo Charts numerous times. I really loved that website. The dedication that team had to keep track of every single stat you could think of was insane!

I know exactly what you mean! I do the exact same thing!
