Button Mapping vs. Halo 5 control layout option

I’m getting really tired of clicking right stick (RS) to zoom in because all of the weapons use Smart Link. I gain a huge advantage if I use Smart Link, but it messes up my aiming and ruins my controller if I click it excessively. I zoom in more often in Halo 5 than I ever did in the previous Halos.

I used a Boxer layout. It helps me a lot with the melee. I’m really bad at punching people with the B button, so I had to swap B to Left Trigger (LT) to make the punching easier and quicker. I love how Boxer’s layout is designed. I still can crouch with left stick (LS), and I sprint with the B button. Sprinting with B is super convenient because I can press it without a hassle. RS zooming throws me off a lot because I have to click it then aim. Click-aim. Click-aim. Click-aim. It becomes more of a hassle for me aiming wise because clicking RS moves the reticle away from the target. I tried to solve this problem by button mapping, and I switched RS to Right Bumper (RB). It worked well for a moment. I like having RS to throw grenades. I was able to aim much better. However, there was a problem in Warzone. To navigate through the REQ station, I couldn’t use RB to get power weapons. I got really confused, but then I realized that I had to click RS to scroll right. The REQ station, I think, tells me to use RB and LB (Left Bumper) to navigate the menu, so I keep pressing RB when it does nothing.

I didn’t want to constantly restore to default mapping of the controller, so I can play other games normally. I gave up on button mapping, and I moved to Fish Sticks. I play Call of Duty, so I was able pick it up well. However, I’m not quite satisfied with it. I can’t crouch with LS, instead it is B. I don’t like sprint on the LS. The melee on RS is still uncomfortable, and Ground Pound is very uncomfortable in holding RS while aiming. LT worked so much better for my aiming. I was more comfortable with my punching skills in Boxer than Fish Sticks. On the other hand, I was more comfortable in aiming with Fish Sticks than Boxer.

I’m a bit stuck in the between. I love having LT as melee, but I’m willing to make a compromise. I would like to see Smart Link at on LT, and melee on RB. Thrusters at LB, and Fire Weapon at RT. Switch weapons at Y, reload at X, Sprint/zoom at B, and Jump at A. RS is Throw Grenades, and LS is crouch. I think I got everything. I would name this layout “Front-Side Up”. Is it possible to get this Controller Layout for Halo 5? I’d love to use this layout without resorting to button mapping of my XOne controller. I’m still exploring the best option. I’m gonna try Pashooter. I really hope for more button options for best performance. A guy can dream.

I just use the default button layout. Feels about right, nothing really conflicts with one another.

And then legacy southpaw for stick layout, just because.

Really. Everyone has their own quirks.

When you said button mapping I thought you were referring to mappings to the pro controller, but zooming with RS all the time gets annoying. I was going to recommend you assign it to a paddle, but I guess that isn’t an option. Maybe just switch it with what you use least.

No, it’s the one on the Xbox One system. There’s an controller setting that allows you to change the buttons, but it gets confusing. I have a non-pro controller, so yeah. I switched to Pashooter. It’s much better, but I hate the Thruster on the RB, which next to RT. It’s hard to shoot and dodge. Great.
