Bungie Question

Did Bungie intend for humans to be Forerunners?
Example being 343 claiming Chief is Forerunner and telling him he has fired the rings before.

I don’t believe this has ever been answered, as 343i might have changed that idea at some point throughout their run with the Halo Franchise. I’m sure if this has been answered then someone more knowledgable than I will come along and state otherwise.

That might have been what they originaly intended, but if that was so, it was changed when halo 3 rolled out In the iris comic we see a human watching the forerunners build tha ark portal, and the halo 3 terminals makes it clear that they where a different species

Yes:

(in case you’re wondering, Evil Otto is Dave Candland, Bungie UI designer)

And Iris/Halo 3 didn’t refute this either. We only see that the Forerunners developed their civilization in isolation from Earth humanity, but this did not preclude the possibility that they may have had their evolutionary origins on Earth. Hence their interest in Earth humanity.

As others said, yes, Bungie originally intended the Forerunners to be a civilization of highly advanced Humans. In fact the cancelled Halo MMO by Ensemble was going to reflect this by showing them in the game.

It was also the original explanation of why humans were the only ones able to use Forerunner tech. I mean why else would we be able to use their stuff if we were not connected somehow.

Now this fact is explained in a different way.

How have I never seen these before? I also find it highly interesting that the suit on the far left in the second to last link has a remarkable resemblance to Mark V MJolnir.

I’m glad 343 went the direction they did though. A war between the Forerunners and Ancient Humans is far more interesting in my opinion.

Bungie seemed contradictory,
“you are forerunner but this ring is mine”.

The halo MMO seemed like it would have been a mess.

At first I thought the Forerunners were a collection of species (like the covenant). I envisioned Humans being the lowest (or highest) class in this society (because why would we be able to use all of the tech, pressing buttons seems like a job for a low class engineer, so why calibrate the sensors for other species. OR, since all most of what humans had activated was military… Why would a low class be allowed to mess with military equipment). When I first heard about a war between the Ancient Humans and the Forerunners I thought they split from the rest of the group. That was until I actually learned that they were now separate.

Agreed

I still like the idea that the humans are related to the forerunners in some sort of manner, which would sort of make for a more cohesive universe (unless that’s already been explained and I’ve missed the boat entirely).

I always thought that “Forerunner” was a title, not a race. Like whatever race held the Mantle of Responsibility was called “Forerunner”, which is why the humans were regarded as Forerunners, because they were next in the established line to hold that title and combat the flood. The technology didn’t respond to just one race, but to whoever was responsible for the Mantle at the time.

Maybe this is already the case, or maybe I’m talking out of my -Yoink-. But those are my thoughts.

Members of both Ensemble and Bungie have gone on record saying that Bungie wasn’t a huge fan of the expanded universe. They were fine with the books, mostly because besides Nylund’s entries, few of them really had any strong narrative connections to the events of the games. The MMO would have suffered from the same issue that Halo Wars did, Bungie’s refusal to co-operate. A feeling I understand to some degree, but I think they could have handled things far better than they did.

Which is why I like 343i better. They may have made the mistake of commissioning Karren Traviss for Kilo-Five but overall they’ve done a phenomenal job with the expanded lore and they seem willing to keep expanding the universe in every aspect. Which is something that Bungie never really seemed willing to do.

It’s not quite explained, but both species were created by the precursors and seem to be more ‘important’ than other species. There’s a lot of talk of brothers and such in Primordium and Silentum.

That said, I wish they’d given forerunners more normal ears, it’d have helped display the connection (and easy confusion for the same species) better.

During the development of Halo 1 & 2, yes. But they changed that in Halo 3; Terminals.

I also like them better, at least in terms of the story content. The gameplay stuff is where they fall behind a little, although it does seem unfair to judge their one and only game against Bungie’s large catalogue, or even against the five Halo games they did. 343 will grow and have already shown a commitment to improving, so I think the series is in safe hands.

For those interested, here is a link to a post here on Waypoint containing a lot of concept art and designs for all of the Halo games (up to Halo 4) and it includes many images for the Halo MMO (thank god that was cancelled):

https://forums.halowaypoint.com/yaf_postst217917_Halo-Concept-Art-Compilation.aspx

Make sure to look through the CE designs, there were a lot of things that were left out of the game that showed up later (like the Grunts with fat cylinder tanks on their backs that we saw in Reach) also an early concept of an Elite that would have been terrifying.

The Halo MMO stuff is insultingly goofy.

I agree it may be heresy but I don’t miss bungie and their treatment of their own universe one bit.

bungie lft it open for interpretation cause just like MC being all mysterious fans like to imagine their own story play out in their own heads. if you know a story front to back but having some key details left out on purpose it keeps people thinking about it and continue to visit it in their thoughts. kind of like the bible, you know the story but some things are open for debate cause as an individual you get what you need from the story at that specific time. yes MC would be Jesus Christ in this case.
