Bungie didn't care about Sgt. Johnson in H3

I’ve played through the H3 campaign many times since 2007, but it’s only now that I realize that Johnson spends most of the story getting his butt kicked!

Literally anything significant that happens to him in H3 is always an unfortunate occurrence. In the first mission he gets taken prisoner (not the first or last time), and the Cheif must save him. In the second mission he fails to protect the bomb and Cheif has to arm it again. In the Covenant mission he fails to deactivate the sheild at his tower and the Chief must clean up after him. Oh yeah, he gets taken prisoner again. Then Keys dies attempting to rescue him. Then to top it all off, he casually pisses off Spark at the end and gets a hole blasted through his chest! Poor guy!

And yet he still looks like a badass.

Quite an interesting theory!

Yeah I’m glad you posted this, OP! I’d noticed this too and didn’t really understand why they decided to put him in situations that made him look weak. It’s worse when you think about all the badass stuff he did in Halo 2 like commandeering the Scarab and saving Miranda’s life dangerous situations.

I wouldn’t say that Bungie didn’t care but it added drama to the story. The story isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, there’s going to be drama and our heroes are going to be pushed and tested to their absolute limits. Its them against all odds. I wasn’t a fan of Johnson’s death either but I can understand why they did it.

Johnson = Dead.
Also, this thread is discussing about how Bungie used Johnson in Halo 3 and not his death. Just because he survived something obviously worse doesn’t mean he’ll survive everything. He died in the field of battle in a cutscene RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES FOR FORGE SAKE. He’s dead.

Now, with that out of the way, let me say my thoughts on the topic.
Johnson remained being who he was, but he doesn’t seem to contribute to the story as much as Halo 2. In the latter, you had him saying unforgettable lines of awesomeness and you see him kick -BLAM!- on the battlefield. He saves Miranda, he pilots a Scarab and assists in the fight against Tartarus, actually being a key piece to kill Tartarus. In Halo 3, he’s occupied being a… how do it put it? Weakling? Yeah, a weakling who does barely nothing in the plot. He was used to prepare the rings to fire, but anyone could have been in his place and the events would likely play out the same, there just wouldn’t be any roasty comments towards the Brute. What about his assistance as we’re climbing up the Zigarot? Well, he used the Spartan Laser. I could see any other Marine do that just the same way, but maybe not Miranda.

With that said, Bungie only seemed to care about Chief, Cortana and the Gravemind as these characters seem to be really greatly used, even Cortana despite appearing in the end of Cortana (mission), and the Gravemind that had these lines that deep down in the lore actually meant something both in the past and future of Halo. But anyone else was… meh. Arby may be an exception, but since he was demoted from an actual protagonist to a sidekick, I wouldn’t consider him any different despite how much I like his character.

Sorry, did I hurt your feelings?
I don’t even notice what rank someone is, and that’s bad on my part, but you don’t need to write like I’m an insensitive jerk.
The reason why you’re sometimes told to write in the old thread is because it’s still active. Why you’re then told that the thread is too old is because it’s already innactive. It’s very typical and happens to everybody. Why they close them? I don’t really remember, ask a Monitor.
You’re told to not take it off course as to that you shouldn’t bring stuff completely unrelated to the topic. Would it make sense if we were talking about Halo then someone brings up Star Wars out of the blue just for the sake of talking about it?

I actually like Johnson’s characterization in Halo 3.

He’s tired. He’s been fighting this war since day one, and seeing all the people he cares about die is taking its toll, perhaps leading to Johnson making more and more mistakes. His death is especially poignant.

Within sight of the finish line, Johnson dies. He never really sees the war fully end (As in the defeat of the Flood), and dies as he lived. He’s an incredibly sad character, and it was fun seeing his character develop across the trilogy.

eff this you are all unfriendly and suck. You retroactively block a post someone already thought was interesting? The person who made this thread thought my comment was interesting and you retroactively block it?

You are all crybaby children. Enjoy your life you dummies.

Johnson is my favourite charachter in the series. Shame that he died that way in Halo 3.
Yes, in Halo 3 he wasn’t as badass as in 2, but I still liked him.
My favourite quote ever in the series comes exactly from him, when in Halo 2 he replies to Miranda about the Regret message at the beginning of Outskirts. That was a really badass line!

My first of the classic Halo games was Halo 3 (started with Reach, then ODST) and when I met Johnson I did not like him. I thought he was a bit boring. Then I played Halo 1 and thought “Oh him” and thought nothing of him. Then I finally (years later) got to play Halo 2 and boy was Johnson the ultimate bad’yoink’. I loved it whenever he opened his mouth, was shooting something, or just being cool. I sure do Regret that Halo 3 did not paint a good depiction of him, I regret diliking him, and I regret seeing Johnson get his butt kicked by the machine!
