Lately a lot of threads have been locked as they are old threads that have been bumped back to the front page. While some deserve it i dont understand why other are not left alone. We are encouraged to see if the topic for our post exists before you create a new one and are we not encouraged to post in that thread so we dont get mulitple threads about the same topic. A lot of new players are playng Reach now and are coming up with questions about the game that us older players have answered long ago. If they speand the time to research and find a topic on what they want and ask their question or post thier topic in that thread then why are the mods penalising them for doing so. I just re read the forum rules, FAQs and guidelines and nowhere can i see it where it says do not bump old threads.
One example would be the thread on Noble Six survival theories. Why did it get locked. If someone wants to come in a discuss their opinion in a thread that contains all the previous theories and arguements then why cant they. Just because we all read it 2 years ago doesnt mean we cant get a fresh idea or someone elses opinion on a topic.
Halo Waypoint Forum Rules state:
“Please do not spam. Spam includes but is not limited to commercial posts, single word responses, petitions, non-English posts, posts containing all-caps, necroposts and bumps (replies purposely made to move the thread to the top of the active thread list).”
Lycan thats fine for a legitimate bump of an old thread but what about my arguement that we are encouraged to see if a topic exists before creating a new one and then posting your opinion/ ideas on that topic. Surely we dont consider this bumping an old thread just to get it back on the first page.

In that case, one should make a new topic instead of posting in one that’s two years old.
I don’t understand why topics aren’t automatically locked after 4 months or so anyway. I’ve never seen a useful necropost and the mods lock 'em anyway. Why even have the option to post in them if there will never be a “legal” reason to?

something i’ve been wondering also.
The Moderation edit message is:
“Please refrain from reviving extremely old threads without just cause”
so i’m wondering, what would apply as a “just cause”?

The only just cause I can think of would be a help thread that had a lot of useful posts in it, and a new method/style was discovered.

It is a bit subjective, and may be a tricky to understand when it’s ok and when it’s not. Determining factors can be: current relevance, constructiveness, and age of thread. Just ask yourself, “Is what I’ve about to post contribute significantly and how relevant is it to the OP?”
I know, “significantly” is quite the subjective term, but it’s difficult to quantify as these things can be handled on a case by case basis.
I look at it this way, the forum is like a newspaper and you want to read what’s current and in the headlines.
There’s nothing wrong with reading older posts for research or to browse around certain topics and read what people had to say to give you an understanding of why or what lead to change or to read peoples opinions which you may or may not agree with.
Personally, unless its breaking news to revive an older post its best to leave them where they are and if you have something to say or have a strong opinion about something there’s nothing wrong with starting a new post.
Because it pushes the new topics away before they can get chance to get replies.
One of the best examples I can give is Bethesda forums, who lock each thread after 200 replies so if it is worth replying to, people generally don’t complain if you make a new one.
It’s all about context, if its more than a week since the last post or not in the first two pages I’d just leave it.

I’d say that the encouragement to find existing threads refers more to existing threads that are currently active. It’s there so that we don’t have twenty threads about the same thing, all on the first page of a forum section. So my interpretation of that guideline is: look for an existing thread, but if you can’t find any that are active, then feel free to make a new one.

The Recruiting section is a good place to recruit people for clans. Just be sure to follow the Recruiting-specific rules if you wish to create a thread for your clan there.
