Jun is qualified to assassinate Chief. Perhaps Locke and his team are out to find Chief before Jun does? Just an idea…
That doesn’t make any sense.

Why not? Up for discussion as an idea.
idk why, but I thought that too
That would explain where jun got to

Jun’s in charge of recruitment for the S-IV program. In the latest novel he said he was done with field duty.
Hyping up Locke as the secondary protagonist only to use Jun as the sniper? Makes zero sense.
Maybe, maybe… xD

This. Jun is retired.
Oni brings Jun out of retirement for this one special mission, to take down John. Similar situation to where Palmer was given orders from head of Oni to take down dr. Halsey only to have Fireteam Majestic, sent by Laskey, to stop her. Well, Jun is likewise Osman’s assassin and Locke’s team is sent by someone else to get to John before Jun does and to bring the Chief back home as Locke himself states he will be doing when speaking to the Arbiter.

This.
It doesn’t make sense to create a new character that could possibly become the new main character in the future if they’re just going to use an old protagonist.
Locke is the one hunting Chief. Jun is training Spartan 4’s.

Maybe you’re right but it is fun to speculate. Locke doesn’t necessarily need to be the secondary protagonist. We just have no idea as to why John is being hunted down. The answer to that question seems to drive a major part of the story. Perhaps Locke has learnt from his past that things are not as black and white as they are made out to be and is open to finding out the answers about John for himself before deciding to eliminate him as per following orders. The sniper rifle in the countdown video made me think Jun is involved somehow. Sniper rifle = Assassin. Locke is just not an assassin. The different words etched into the bullet seem to indicate a very complicated situation. A traitor to some, a hero to others and still a demon and a god(John receiving the geas from the Librarian essence has changed him in some way. We still don’t know the full extent of this.) to others to the point where his identity as humanity’s hero and saviour is fragmented into a thousand pieces as seen by the shattering of his helmet.

Arbiter specifically call Locke a hunter though. Locke says it’s close enough.
Hunters tend to use sniper rifles.
But yes, I agree with you that Locke is probably not out to just kill Chief. He has been through enough to want to actually know what’s going on, he wants to know why Chief went missing. That’s why I think he will end up siding with Chief in the end, he will see what he’s after and understand that Chief’s not the bad guy.
I guess that could be a reason for ONI to send out another assassin for Chief which would end up succeeding and Locke has to pick up Chief’s mantle or something…

Locke is a requisitions specialist. He is one of ONI’s top agents, specializing in tracking things down and eliminating them should he need to.
He is, by definition, an assassin.

You may be right but after watching nightfall I got the impression that Locke has learnt the hard way what sacrifice is, that relationships are not so cut and dry in moments where important decisions need to be made. In other words, I don’t think Locke is now the type of character to simply eliminate a target without question, especially the type of target with the reputation and calibre of John. Character and motivation have become important elements to Locke. Anyways, I think there are still major surprises waiting for us in the story. Jun could be one of them maybe. Also, if Macer, Buck and Romeo are part of Locke’s team of Spartans then I don’t think taking the Chief out without question will happen knowing what kind of characters they are.

Like what HaloFollower was thinking, what if the UNSC sent Blue Team (Chief’s old team) to hunt down Master Chief and possibly kill him? Linda does have a sniper rifle so maybe they’ll have to hunt down their old squad leader.

Interesting idea but it might be a little too far fetched since Blue Team is John’s family really and I can’t see them ever turning against John and hunting him down. Perhaps Blue Team are with John and fight for and with him. Perhaps it will be John and his old team vs Locke and his team and Jun the outside Oni element.

Fucccckkk that. Way to ruin a character outsourced writing team and 343 for allowing it. Jun is like 15 years younger than chief is and spartans are pretty much supposed to fight til they can’t anymore (or die).

343 didn’t start that. Maria-062 was allowed to join the reserves and start a family and was the one who tested Chief’s Mk.VI before he got it in Halo 2 and that was under Bungie’s leadership of the Halo franchise. Seems exceptions for Spartans to do other work and not just fight until they die existed before 343 took charge.

Not true. It’s not entirely unheard of for Spartans to retire without injury given the choice, especially after the war in the case with Ralph.
