BTB's starting AR should have a laser targeter

The Breakout 2.0 update showed us that 343 can start us with attachments on loadout weapons, and it gave me an idea.

The assault rifle’s place in BTB is very, very limited. It was balanced almost entirely with 4v4 Arena in mind, and so it’s nigh-useless in BTB except on the rare occasion that you meet someone in melee range inside a cramped area, in which case you probably saw them at BR range first and didn’t have time to switch to your AR. If we were to start with laser targeters on our ARs (the attachment that reduces bloom and max spread), it would accommodate for the increased ranges of combat and give it a proper place in this mode.

I think the AR would be almost perfectly balanced for BTB with a laser targeter. Every time I use it in BTB, it seems like the enemy is just out of range.

The long barrel is another possibility. It increases red-reticle range and increases aim assist at all ranges within that. But aim really isn’t the issue with the AR in BTB, and increasing aim assist is kind of iffy for Arena.

Or we could all just start with a Rifle instead, Assault Rifle secondary

I strongly disagree. In my opinion the AR is incredibly overpowered in Arena, but is almost ok (still op) in BTB. I don’t know what makes you think that it should be a precision weapon, because it’s not - it’s meant for close quarters only.

You are nuts if you think this thing is overpowered.

There are people every Halo game who think every automatic weapon is overpowered on principle, and they are not to be responded to seriously.

That’s incredibly constructive on your side, you only managed to say that I’m “not to be responded to seriously”. I would justify my opinion since every opinion is (should be) debatable, but, unfortunately, you behave like that kind of people you described. So peace out, I wish you have fun running around BTB maps with your beloved AR.

Okay then, enlighten me. How is it overpowered? It’s barely used in Arena by anyone gold rank or above, and just about nobody uses it in BTB. Tell me how a weapon with such little versatility is overpowered. Tell me how a weapon with a kill time the same speed as the BR but wildly more inaccurate with less range and fewer potential kills per magazine, is overpowered.

I came to that conclusion because the only answer anyone ever comes up with for this question is "because it’s a ‘spray weapon’ " hence why I don’t take them seriously, because they think its inaccuracy is somehow a bonus.

I don’t pretend to enlighten you, but I’ll try to support my point of view. I’m plat level, so I’m quite bad at the game, but I can bring the example of the “cruise control to champion” serie (link below), by Vetoed: he created a smurf account to show how using almost only autos is a more than valid strategy to rank up to diamond.
You could say that he got to champ because he is incredibly skilled, and to some extent you would be right: still, he did manage to rank high-diamond using almost entirely ARs and SMGs.

If you miss more than 1 shot with the magnum against a decently skilled AR used, you’re doomed at close and mid range. While I’m perfectly fine with this happening at close range, I think the AR is overpowered because of its supremacy even at mid (say, 10-20m) range - thanks to smart link.
In BTB you spawn with a BR for long-mid range encounters, and with an AR for short(-mid) range ones: in my opinion, not only spawning with a more precise AR would defy the idea itself of spawning with a true automatic weapon, but also it would be redundant, since you have a way better alternative to shoot at range.

I’d rephrase your “nobody uses it in BTB” with “nobody uses it in BTB at range”, and hell they’re right: in close encounters I (and the players I face in BTB) switch to the AR.
In BTB it’s not that overpowered, being the BR a much better rival to the AR at mid range - which shouldn’t be, in my opinion a BR should completely destroy an AR at mid range. The inaccuracy of the AR is clearly a malus, but it’s needed to balance its damage and rate of fire. I don’t pretend (nor I want) to change your opinion, I’m just here to say mine: in this game almost every automatic weapon is OP and some of them (SMG, SAW, storm rifle, I’m looking at you) should be, if not completely removed, heavily nerfed.

Aside from the Shotgun, Scattershot, Energy Sword, and Gravity Hammer, automatic weapons rule in close quarters, and are to be respected that way. They may be used in mid-range in support roles, but with the exceptions of the REQ variants, their strengths rarely extend to that range. The ability to overwhelm a player with fire, or using a followup melee can quickly shut down a foe or two. Precision weapons can also be potent in close quarters, but they often lose to an automatic in that range.

In any case, no weapon is overpowered - each weapon has their own strengths and weaknesses at every engagement range.
