BTB Sandtrap / Altar

Good Afternoon Spartans

This map used to be one of may all time favourites, at least Halo 3’s was.

I’ve had a couple of games on this map in BTB - my friends and I were shocked that what I’m about to tell you about happened twice on the same day, and before you ask, yes they were different groups of people in each game.

So the game started and we were all up for a good fight, having played countless games on this map in Halo 3. What we got both times was pinned down in our spawn like I have never experienced before. The enemy team managed to grab a banshee and fly over base/spawn point for about 60% of the match, banshee bombing us to oblivion.

We tried tirelessly to bring him down, rocket pod was useless as he was too fast for a lock and our standard gun fire was missing most of the time due to his constant flips and rolls. This left the rest of his team able to take up positions around us keeping us pinned in our spawn.

Once we eventually took him down we were able to fight our way out into the rest of the map but at something like 70-12 the game is pretty much done.

Has anyone else seen this tactic used - know of a suitable defence?

It left us thinking that possibly the banshee should be taken off and maybe tanks put in its place.

Thoughts?

Shoot the banshee. You spawn with battle rifles, if two or three of you take aim and let volley the banshee will go down in seconds. I know you said that he was evading a bit, but it honestly doesn’t take much coordination since there is almost no cover for the banshee aside from the pillars. You can also have two guys make a run for the splaser.

Yeah, quit before the match starts.

Altar plays horribly.

Evading a bit would be a huge understatement - he only stopped evading to take a quick shot. But I get what your saying, some combined fire should bring him down fairly quickly, shame we didn’t have a bigger squad, was only 3 of us on at the time.

Hahaha fair enough, I can never bring myself to quit - it definitely doesn’t feel like the old version did, for obvious reasons. It needs the brute choppers back and running around on it.

That’s why I say quit before the game starts. Usually, it will find people to replace those who quit before it starts.

I usually stay in the game regardless, but obviously Altar isn’t one of my favorite maps.

What’s your thoughts on “unearthed” ?

Personally I really hate it

Spawns don’t seem to work at all cause they don’t follow the rules of how spawns work.

Ive spawned where I died multiple times despite the spawn location I was expecting being free from enemies.

Had enemies spawn behind me when my back was up against a wall.

Spawned with the enemy when they are all together even at the start of the match. Vid it’s only happened once at the start of the match but Ives spawned directly among so many enemies that were grouped together like that.

Nearly all maps are exploitable for spawn trapping it’s not exclusive to just a few maps.

I have not played on that map yet.

I play with a friend called Vampiric Monk, he has this same thing happen to him all the time. It really annoys him.

Think of it as a poor man’s Spire (Halo Reach) - big circle with a large crane in the centre (instead of the huge spire) and two bases at either end. Gameplay on the map is terrible, either stay on the ground and risk being sniped or ground pounded from the crane or go up top and hold the crane so that the enemy moves freely on the ground. That is of course if one of the two wasps don’t kill you first.

I don’t exactly like Wasps, either, so I doubt I’ll like that map.

I mean yeah, BTB traditionally have vehicles, but throwing any type of vehicle on the map without really playtesting it doesn’t help, either. I feel like Wasps were added to some of these maps because it was a new REQ and 343 wanted a way for people who don’t have the REQ to get a taste of it.

You must not have played a lot of Halo if that was the first time something like that has happened to you. Next time don’t miss most of your shots. A team needs to really team shoot banshees when they have really good players like that flying them.

Your probably right on that one. Wish we could have the Falcon back from Reach, that thing was awesome!

Your a funny guy Lethal (Arnie Quote) I’ve been spawn camped before sure, never by a single vehicle though. it was probably 50% his pilot skills and 50% a disorganised team.

It happened to me quite often in H3 but mostly on Valhalla where they could get too mid and the banshee would just fly around the base and bomb us. Bad games happen. I think altars flaw is they made it smaller than sandtrap was really. But the best way to get rid of problem banshees is to just team shoot the yoink out of it.

That might be what feel slightly off to me about Altar, its size, I had no idea it was smaller than the original.
Your right though, bad games will happen, thankfully few and far between most days.

Teamshot the Banshee with your BRs. It’s super easy to take it down if you all try to take it down together.

Shame I didn’t have a bigger squad that could all focus on the banshee.

Isn’t there still a hydra at your base? Lock on and fire. Usually drops the banshee before you can run out of ammo.
