I don’t agree with this. For exxample, DMR starts on Hemorrhage (i.e. Blood Gulch) was pretty fun in Reach.
oh god no, getting crossed by 12 people in spawn… No thanks.
Deadlock also has Shock/Stalker rifle, rockets in the cave, and that’s all I know so far lol. For some reason everything always seems to happen in the cave area, probably because its fun idk.
Yes, but wouldn’t that just make the experience more meaningful? If you got to every game, it wouldn’t be as special.
Boltshot was trash in BTB. Was bonkers in 4v4 though.
Camo/Vehicle perk and a few others were extremely OP and made it awful when playing against a full stack. It was fun normally though.
I would like them to at least try out BR starts to see how it goes or have more racks. If it doesn’t work out, okay go back to the current system but as it is right now that’s my main reason I’m not enjoying BTB as much. It used to be my favourite mode in past Halo’s but the lack of BR’s in this one really kills it for me.
Last night I finally got the chance to drive a tank for theast like minute of the match and I mean I guess it did make it more “special”, but it’s just TOO rare for my liking currently. I’m totally fine with not having tank spam the entirety of the match, that is no fun. But 2 weeks with playing a decent amount and not driving a single tank… that’s just too rare for me.
At first I thought similar, but after putting more thought into the matter it kinda became obvious to me why they didn’t.
Vehicles feel weak? Ok then, good luck not getting fried out of the sky in seconds with an entire enemy team teamshotting your wasp/Banshee, or your gunner in a Warthog, and so on.
Imagine how cringe it would be trying to hop out of spawn and getting melted across the map, don’t like the glare? Well enjoy seeing 12 consistently looking at you lol.
Another huge point (that has been raised by others) is that if everyone spawned with a BR it would be almost pointless to pick up anything that isn’t a power weapon, so it would render like 3/4 of the sandbox worthless almost immediately.
I just think its another one of those instances of where something may sound kind of cool on paper, but in practice it plays far worse. Like this doesn’t even take into consideration a high level player (think professional or semi-pro) just absolutely destroying entire teams and games becoming extremely one sided and unwinnable for that reason.
Because this was such a problem in Halo 3 BTB that made that game just unfun to play in comparison…
I agree that BR starts would not work in the current maps. I do not agree that it is impossible (or even necessarily more difficult) to make maps that are more like the Bungie style BTB maps, where BR starts would work just fine.
You don’t know what you are talking about my guy, have you tried hitting shots far away in Halo 3 BTB? I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn in that game. Halo Infinite BR is closer to Reach DMR but TU.
This doesn’t even make sense either… Infinite maps make more sense because they aren’t as “open” as Bungie era maps were, so not as much room for spawn killing or getting beamed cross map.
I think another aspect that is being left out of this discussion is SBMM, they won’t put you (or any of us for that matter) against complete noobs, they’ll put me against other sweats, sounds awful in my opinion.
Which was perfectly fine. Reach had huge open maps, everyone had DMRs, everyone could hit shots at very long range, and Reach BTB was very good.
It was drastically worse than Infinite BTB though, mainly due to all the OP abilities.
I think your nostalgia is a detriment to how you percieve previous Halo games, Halo 3 BTB for example, is probably the worst BTB in the series. Vehicles that are absurdly OP, Spartan Laser being the only real good anti-vehicle tool in the sandbox, guns that are almost impossible to kill at range (Sniper could though, obviously)
I remember when I was younger and playing Halo 3 BTB I used to think it was awesome, but I’ve played a bit of it recently and its trash. People remember the time they got into a Warthog and went on a Running Riot and went “golly this game is awesome” and forgot all the times they weren’t in vehicles and got destroyed.
Infinite BTB>Halo 4>Reach>Halo 5 (if you count Warzone)>Halo 3
I don’t have much experience in CE/2, so won’t put them in.
Infinite BTB is good in my opinion, because vehicles aren’t anywhere close to as OP as they once were (Wasp is close though but is still easier to counter than Banshee used to be for example) and the overall focus of gunfights over vehicle spam makes it feel fairer. You can still do a few really strong strategies (Wasp flag pull, repulsor on Stockpile, etc.) but good luck seeing a 100-10 kill game for example like you could see in 3/Reach.
Edit: Infinite doesn’t just give you tons of free kills for using a vehicle, you have to be really good with it, have support to not get destroyed, and so on. Could you imagine the Wasp in Halo 3?
Wasps would be getting consistent perfections because there are very few counters. Wasps can get melted just with good team fire alone, even weapons like Heatwave/Sentinel Beam do tons of vehicle damage so good luck guys going into BTB and pubstomping like they could in olden days.
I get where you’re coming from but I just like playing with BR’s, that’s Halo to me. When they ruined the BR in H5 I stopped playing BTB. The BR IS what makes Halo fun to me (along with the H5 pistol, shame that didn’t make a return) so I genuinely don’t care about the rest of the sandbox. If you only got a BR and had to fight for power weapons I’d be having a blast, that’s how I played all the other Halo’s but I can’t in this one. I get not everyone feels like that so it’s a selfish request but hey that’s how I feel. Current BTB is just not it for me unfortunately.
I’m a CE magnum kind of guy myself, but I realize just how insane it would be in BTB (Bluejay just got a baker’s dozen
) so that’s kind of my point.
There’s levels to it you and I know
BTB is awful. who tf at 343 thought that spawning power vehicles at one teams spawn point and not the other thought that was a good idea. and even when they spawn in the middle of the map, it just creates a massive whirlwind of players around it which ends up in the vehicle being destroyed in seconds.
what a sh!tshow.
Reach did BTB perfectly. Have vehicles spawn on a timer and not just around the map. Have them spawn in team bases for obvious reasons. Why did 343 feel the need to change this? if it aint broke dont fix it
Yes, but wouldn’t that just make the experience more meaningful? If you got to every game, it wouldn’t be as special.
That’s not why people play BTB people play BTB because tanks and flying vehicles and ghosts and choppers and gungoose are just another weapon pickup in BTB. It’s a game mode with the full sandbox available to the players from start to finish. The randomized weapon spawns and rare vehicles only hurt the game-mode.
And even in classic BTB you don’t get the tank every time, there were 7 other players on the team. It would be 11 other players now.
Yeah I get that it could be broken but I’d really appreciate if they at least tried it. If it works, sweet. If not, they can just go back to the current system.

Ohhhhhh man… that was a good laugh. Thanks for that. Sometimes I appreciate being reminded of some of the truly clown hot takes that are out there. To each his own, I suppose.
If that’s your take on BTB, no point in me discussing with you further.
I’d take commando starts at this point
I liked BTB a lot in 2, 3, and Reach; I liked that it was this sandbox experience where both sides had toys to play with at the start, including tanks and flying vehicles. The maps were often big enough to foster that kind of play. These maps feel very different; smaller and narrower. I wouldn’t mind them every once in a while - I figure the variety would be nice in BTB, sorta like going from Hemorrhage to Boardwalk or from Valhalla to Standoff or from Coagulation to Zanzibar - but the complete absence of a map akin to Blood Gulch here feels like a glaring oversight and the present maps feel very distinct from what I’m used to at least, which isn’t a bad thing per se, but the absence of those traditional elements is, in my view.
Reply doesn’t actually address anything I said.
Well gg. I have real stuff to discuss.
Oh really? I wasn’t aware of that. I figured they spawned on a timer, which is why many games ended before the power vehicles showed up. I’ve seen other people advocating for score-based vehicle spawns as well, but I didn’t dig any deeper to find my information. My bad!
Reading through this forum it seems the majority are in favour of a more traditional BTB experience. Hopefully 343i will will take on board our criticisms and make changes that will provide a BTB experience that lives up to the legacy that came before it.
