I don’t know if this has been adressed or not in a blog post or something, but in case somebody hasn’t noticed, we can see 2 brutes use the new Bulldog shotgun in the campaign demo.
As you can see here in the demo, from aproximately minute 6:00 to 6:22, one brute in the back fires at chief when he’s on the turret, after he gets out, a different one fires at him too before throwing a grenade, both using the shotgun, you can see clearly the shape of the gun is the same to the one chief picks up, and also chief picks up ammo after walking over his corpse.
I think this is pretty cool, it adds variety to enemy encounters, i hope elites and the rest of the enemy types can do this too.
Brutes used shotguns back in Halo 2, funny enough. Pretty sure this is a callback to that.

They did? I don’t remember that, well then, i’m glad that’s back.

Yeah I believe they had a weapons stockpile of human stuff too, despite it being heresy.
The Banished would have even less reason to care about that of course.
It makes sense. Brutes use anything available to win a fight. I wonder if this will rollover to human vehicles…

Brutes have an appreciate for human weapons. Mauler, Spiker, and Brute Shot are ballistic weapons super similar to human weapons. In H2 they have a stockpile of human weapons on the level uprising and will even wield shotguns.
Brutes aren’t like Elites. They’ll use anything to kill you. They sometimes had shotguns in Halo 2, and IIRC, some of the ones piloting Banshees had battle rifles for some reason.
Brutes did use shotguns in Halo 2 but also the Banished are known for stealing UNSC gear from bases and outposts like pirates. They get any kind of resource they can get their hands on.
Well they a are fanatic space pirates
This has always been a thing, it’s seen a lot in Halo 2 nearing the end of the game and within the third to last mission within a room you can find some UNSC based weapons suh as a battle rifle, shotgun and rocket launcher.

Really?! I never noticed, even when I played Halo 2 back on OG Xbox (granted I was much younger lol). I think it’s a neat idea.
Also there were the ‘Heretic Elites’ in Reach firefight that used human weapons (imo they were more deadly cos you couldn’t dodge their shots).
I really like that detail because it is something that caracterized the brutes since Halo 2, where you can see that they have a stash of human weapons, also I think this goes well with them being part of the banished, they are no longer part of the covenant, they are mercenaries so they use the weapons they have at their disposal. I would like to see more about this in Halo Infinite with a squad of brutes using rocket launchers or something like that, I think this could give more variety to the brute fights in Halo Infinite.
A nice surprise H2 berserk brutes something to watch out for.

Cool, turret carrying brutes fun at times.
Then it will be easier to kill them, the plasma weapons are more dangerous in my opinion, just because they can turn down the energy shields.
I think leaning into the more scrappy and brutal tendencies of the Brutes is great, and their willingness to appropriate and use human ordinance to their advantage is a great way to illustrate those qualities. I don’t think the Banished- unlike prior Covenant iterations of the Brutes-- would have any fundamental compunction against using human technology on grounds of heresy or anything of the sort, either, which further supports all of this.
I do think that part of Halo’s combat loop in the campaigns has always largely revolved around Covenant ordinance being more “fun” to fight against on the basis that Plasma projectiles (and even Spikers) have always been extremely visible and dodgeable by players comfortable and experienced with the movement and flow of the combat, which is undermined slightly by human ordinance. It’s nothing entirely foreign, though, with Flood having always used human weaponry and units like the Heretics in Reach FF also utilizing it, in addition to H2’s Brutes.
Even so, I do think that opponents using human weapons should remain the exception rather than the rule, because I do believe they are less fun and satisfying to fight. Having some present is good for variety and lore purposes, though, so I say go for it!
Yeah, they also use the VK78 commando (at least the blue brutes) at :41 to :44 at the campaign gameplay trailer.
