"Brutally honest" Halo 4 review -- 3/5*s

Link

People seem divided between loving the game, or criticising it for many of the explored reasons. What do you think?

Fix the grenades before I kill myself.

meh the only complaint i have is the lack of ammo. Not a fan of that but oh well.

Terrible review to be quite honest  (I review games myself)

The campaign reviewer takes a shot at the story for changing the roles of chief and cortana from what they were in previous Halos without realizing that the evolution of their characters is the entire point of the story.

Also, bizarrely, he criticizes the sound design despite the fact it’s miles ahead of anything the series has seen before. Vehicles now sound like they actually have engines and weapons no longer sound like they were manufactured by Toys ‘R’ Us.

The multiplayer reviewer isn’t much better either. He confuses “psychological tricks” with “what gamers like in multiplayer”, and complains that ‘power weapons’ are ‘too powerful’… they’re power weapons?

It seems like you guys don’t like the fact that Halo 4 isn’t Halo 2 or 3. Without realizing that this doesn’t make it a bad game. It’s a different game, from a different studio with different ideas.

I’m not sure Halo 4 is a masterpiece. But it’s undoubtedly one of the best games of the year; so to give it 2.5 or 3 stars out of 5 looks a bit petty

my only problem i have with the game.is lack of maps on multiplayer

I am posting my brutally honest opinion on it today in an indepth review.

13 min campaign.

> The sound effects, however, leave much to be desired.

That one sentence has possibly made me lose all faith in humanity. This review is BS, as anyone who says the above about this game clearly lacks the necessary number of brain cells required to write a proper review.

Ok really people? Besides ODST, Reach and this one All Halo’s story’s have been could be put in a text screen at the start of the game.
I’m not saying all the story’s were great BUT IT WAS A STORY!

> Also, bizarrely, he criticizes the sound design despite the fact it’s miles ahead of anything the series has seen before. Vehicles now sound like they actually have engines and weapons no longer sound like they were manufactured by Toys ‘R’ Us.

You cannot be serious.

[/li]- The sound effects resonating from guns and vehicles were too loud. In fact, I have to turn down the volume a few notches from what it usually is in other games just to play Halo 4.

  • The aforementioned effects felt jarring, as if someone was squealing in your ear - the continual “pop pop” of the Magnum and the atrocious sound of the Warthog being the most notable.
  • Weapon sounds are radically different from what they have [arguably] come to be heard as. For instance, the Fuel Rod sounds like a mortar, the Plasma Pistol sounds like the Magnum, etc…
  • The music was all too often either drowned-out by awful sound effects from guns and vehicles or was too low to begin with.
  • There was no iconic Halo music in the game you could easily identify and say “that’s Halo”; I don’t recall at any time there being any (you could almost say obligatory) moments where the actual theme music plays and you got to feel like a badass super solider blowing -Yoink- up (see: Metropolis bridge crossing in Halo 2).
  • There was no memorable music to the game, apart from the main menu theme (which again, didn’t sound like the Halo I’ve come to know).

I agree with everything the reviewer said about the story.

Meh, if they don’t like it they don’t have to play it. Hopefully they won’t.

Stop holding on to the past, this is a new game, and if you forgot the fact that its Halo it would get hardly any hate at all.
the sound design is brilliant (except for the hog, that gets on my nerves a bit). but as for the music i like it, its not distinctly halo, but i think it is distinctly halo 4, it really suits the feel of the campaign i found, but i can understant the nostalgia, yet in time i believe that the new music will forge it’s own identity, dont forget there are still two more titles in the trillogy.

A well written review.

I am currently playing the Campaign again, this time finishing up on Legendary difficulty and I must say how confusing and convoluted the storyline can be to someone who has no knowledge of the canon which is written in the Forerunner-saga novels, or any other novels for that matter. To attempt to fit in all the information given efficiently into 8 levels is absurdly difficult and now that my high serotonin levels after purchasing this game are now gone, I can see that this was not achieved. A player should not have to go looking for terminals, read novels, or watch Forward unto Dawn to get an idea of what’s going on between characters and the reasons for their behavior. All it shows to me is that 343 couldn’t effectively fit all the content they wanted to tell in the game and took a poor approach to attempt to tell it.

I agree about the Hog sound and the brightness (though I don’t often notice the latter).

>To add insult to injury, the AI characters are also incredibly unhelpful.

I think it’s mostly because they have limited firing range and poor starting weapons. Once you give them better weapons, they should be pretty useful.

>Little opportunity for strategic play

Nope.

Also, I fully expected the Knights to try to compromise my position. It’s why after killing a Knight’s Watcher, I get the -Yoink- out of there and prepare to ambush.

> Terrible review to be quite honest  (I review games myself)

Yeah I do too and I am confused why this matters.

> The campaign reviewer takes a shot at the story for changing the roles of chief and cortana from what they were in previous Halos without realizing that the evolution of their characters is the entire point of the story.

The evolution seems unsettling. The Cortana and Chief isn’t there that we all know and love. Cortana just now sounds like my ex girl and the Chief doesn’t give me the “badass” vibe like in the other Halos. Characters only reflected the love part rather than the whole entire point of the story. Story was weak anyways. The fact that you had to read the ternimals, books, and watch FUD just shows how weak it was.

> Also, bizarrely, he criticizes the sound design despite the fact it’s miles ahead of anything the series has seen before. Vehicles now sound like they actually have engines and weapons no longer sound like they were manufactured by Toys ‘R’ Us.

The warthog sounds exactly like a RC car you get from a toys r us store. All the iconic sounds that the vehicles, and weapons had in the past are now gun replaced with more of a electronic feel to it. Exactly sounds like something from toys r us.

> The multiplayer reviewer isn’t much better either. He confuses “psychological tricks” with “what gamers like in multiplayer”, and complains that ‘power weapons’ are ‘too powerful’… they’re power weapons?

Power weapons still need to be balanced on a more advanced level. Just because they are just “power” weapons doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be balance from one another.

He also doesn’t confuse psychological tricks with what gamers like in multiplayer so I don’t know where you are coming from.

> It seems like you guys don’t like the fact that Halo 4 isn’t Halo 2 or 3. Without realizing that this doesn’t make it a bad game. It’s a different game, from a different studio with different ideas.

It is the fact that it doesn’t feel like a Halo game because they took everything that was great and iconic and threw it out the window.

> I’m not sure Halo 4 is a masterpiece. But it’s undoubtedly one of the best games of the year; so to give it 2.5 or 3 stars out of 5 looks a bit petty

You sound mad that he had a different opinion with that face you made. You can’t say it is the best game of the year if all the games haven’t come out yet.

Nope. I agree there. I’d even brought this up to people when playing online and they all agreed the sound effects are pretty bad. Take for example, the Warthog. Would a vehicle that size have such a light and choppy sound to it? Of course not. All the guns sound way weaker than they should be.

Solid review. Seems like the core game of H4 is pretty good but a lot of things need to be fixed first before I can actually enjoy it. Halo as a series I have invested so much time into, yet H4 just isn’t that fun, I played for like 4 hours today and not a single minute of that time was spent on H4. This game really needs a big TU.

How many times do I have to say it? It doesn’t sound like the Halo you’re used to, because it’s not the Halo you’re used to! It’s a different game, from a different studio, with different ideas.
>
> Weapons sound different because they were all recorded from scratch. No sounds were carried over from previous Halo games.

> The theme music from old Halo games never plays. It’s new music, from a new composer. It’s not quite as good as Martin O’ Donnell’s work, but it’s better than 90% of game soundtracks out there.

> It’s as if you people are shocked that this game isn’t exactly the same as Halo 3?

It’s true.

I use Astro A50s so you can’t blame it on my sound system.

In campaign, music and dialogue are usually completely drowned behind combat noise.

Almost all the human weapons go wuh-BANG-woooh. Almost as if their sounds at played backwards.

You cannot just look at vehicles having a warning beep for when they’re almost dead (as if the huge flames weren’t enough) and claim the sound designed is top notch.

The warthog from previous games sounded like a Prius? Surely anything’s an improvement over that!?

Also, the weapons have far more punch to them than previous Halos. The AR used to sound like a limited woodpecker.
