Bring the Funny Back

This is a pretty minor “issue” (if that’s what you want to call it), but there was a lack of humor in the Halo 4 campaign. The Grunts weren’t funny like they were in past Halo’s, and since none of the Covenant speak English, there wasn’t even the ocassional funny comment. I activated the IWHBYD and walked toward every marine/Spartan IV i could find, and no one made a funny remark. With the exception of the Conan easter egg, I hadn’t noticed anything really humorous. I remember the the hilarious (and sometimes sadistic) comments the Grunts in Halo 3 would make during combat or while fleeing. And who could forget the peeing Brute? XD I’d like to see more stuff like that in Halo 5. Just look at what SPOPS did with the RvB easter eggs.

I really liked Halo 4’s more serious and more SciFi tone, even if it was at the cost of the comedic flare that was sprinkled in the other Halo games.

I think that if 343i wants to add more funny easter eggs that is more than fine with me, but I wouldn’t want the game to have things pop up that would be detrimental to the darker dramatic style.

YES.

But don’t make it over the top like in Halo 3. LOOK AT CE!!! In CE, it was reflected in the animations too, not just the dialogue.

The only thing from H3 I’d like to see return is Grunt kamikaze trains. Also, bring back the Reach Grunt hop alerted animation. xD

Oh and let’s not forget how in some cutscenes, you could move the right stick and see a hidden egg.

> serious

The hell are you smoking? Spartan Ops has an excess amount of Grunt-related humor, horribly bland Roland jokes, etc. Far from serious. The dialogue just cracks me up.

> SciFi tone

I didn’t see any alien environments… all I saw were a bunch of Forerunner structures.

I guess it’s just my personal feelings that Halo 4 was more serious, dramatic and Scifi. Maybe the game music and art style just gave that impression to me.

Well if you really want funny they could add the grunt funeral skull from Halo Anniversary and just use it with grunt birthday party for deadly and funny explosions.

Heh, I’ve been overly aggressive again haven’t I… yeah the music and art style is serious, no doubt about that.

Ah that’s not what I meant (and besides, I didn’t like Grunt Funeral, it was ridiculous in a bad way).

You know how in Halo 1, when you put enough needler shards into an enemy, they’d try to get it off, they were terrified, etc. This could be amusing WHILE retaining seriousness (it makes sense they respond to it, compared to the newer Halo games where the Needler detonation is instant and enemies have no provisions to react).

Also recall when you would make a big jump in the Hog, the marine chain gunner would raise their arm up (cheering) and commenting on the jump. That could be amusing but at the same time, it was serious in that it made sense. Nowadays, you rarely hear comments from marines, even in such moments. I’d love to have marines commenting on my driving when I pulled off a 360 spin or did a dozen flips. xD

Basically, I think it’s possible for Halo 5 to merge funny and serious. I don’t want them to be isolated pockets like in Halo 3/4. I really hate it when the AI are stuck in an animation (i.e. Halo 3’s -Yoink!- Brutes, Halo 4’s dancing Grunts). I want them to be actively funny. Special dialogue Grunts should be placed in appropriate settings and have roaming capability. I really loved that Grunt at the beginning of Sacred Icon. What was his name… Herbie. For some reason, a glitch made him unkillable. As a result, you could bring him anywhere!

I miss Flipyap.

Maybe with the IWHBYD skull on, if I’m playing the Campaign for the first time I don’t like Grunts talking about their “balls”

I think that the Covenant should continue to speak in their native languages, but the IWHBYD Skull should make them speak English.

Because I really miss

"THE DEMON IS GOING TO EAT ME!!!"

I kinda liked the seriousness of the game. It was more dramatic and I felt more of a connection to the characters–in other words, I actually cared. Some of the humor in previous Halos breaks immersion.

^this, add the humour and english speaking Covenant with the IWHBYD skull

My favorite line from a grunt- BLUE BALLS! They need to add the humor from odst I would hear while playing firefight.

I just wish the Covenant spoke a combination of both English and their native languages.

“Ianacoco hoosheeba kelereekay! The Demon is here!” (My crappy Sangheili)

Something like that.

Oh, and a lot of Wort. We need those Worts.
