Bring back old halo music?

it would be sweet if they brought back the old halo music. i’m not a fan of the new halo music as much as the old.

I think there are copyright issues to deal with there, as technically the music rights belong to Marty and Michael. I don’t believe the music licences would have been transferred when the IP shifted to 343. If they got Marty on board I’m sure they could re-negotiate, but I quite like the artistic direction of Halo 4, if fitted the game quite well (even if plcements and volume weren’t perfect). if you haven’t seen it, look for the audion documentary about the music of Halo 4. Has a great overview of the process Neil and Kazuma went through. It was included with the LE soundtrack, but it could be up on youtube

While the old music was amazing kazuma is doin a very good job in the new stuff

Marty was an employee of Bungie, who was owned by MS.
I’m pretty sure the music is MS’s.

Yeah, unless there is specific evidence to the contrary, I highly doubt that the copyright to that music is in the hands of anyone but Microsoft. Even freelance composers rarely if ever retain full or even significant rights to their work, excepting independent development, where licensing can be a lot more varied (mostly because indie developers can’t generally afford to buy the music outright). Since Marty was an employee at the time, unless he negotiated an extremely unusual employment deal, it’s very unlikely that he has any control over that music now.

If the music was owned by Marty, they wouldn’t have been able to reprise the Halo theme opening and Never Forget in Halo 4. If they can use those pieces of music they can use other ones as well.

I honestly hope they don’t. The new music fits so well with the theme of the new generation of Halo games. More forerunner esc with a lot more scifi in it. Aye the old music was nostalgic, but its not the new generation. Maybe a bit every now and then?

Remixes such as the halo 4 credits would be awesome.

The new music is more thematically appropriate and far less redundant than some of Marty’s previous work.

The main problem was that in 4, the music was so quiet you could barely hear it over the action. 2A fixed this, and maybe overcompensated, but I think the campaign was dramatically improved because of it

I am very interested in the new music, because of a darker Halo, you must have dark music.

Frankly, the main problem in 4 is that most of Davidge’s work was beyond bland. I was reminded of that as I played Midnight recently and had to sit through that generically bombastic “4 chord song of epic film scores” crap that loops in the background for the entire climax. Neil is very much a post-Zimmer composer. The series is better off without him. He would have been best suited sticking to the electronic tracks, and leaving the orchestration to Jinnouchi.

Throwing my hat in as a fan of Neil’s work on 4. Several songs I’ll still listen to in my car even to this day. Love Marty obviously as I believe we all do, but I have zero issue with Neil’s work.

I always thought the music from Halo CE to Halo 3 was strange.

The problem with the new music is that there aren’t that many tracks that have a recognizable melody, or have the ability to get stuck your head. This is something Halos 1-3, ODST had down perfectly. Reach and 4 have the most unmemorable soundtracks because so many of their tracks have little melody, and are mostly ambient. What they need to focus on with music in Halo 5G, is giving the music recognizable melodies. The obvious thing to do is take lessons from the main Halo theme. But also take lessons from the other tracks in the previous Halo games. The best ones with strong melodies being Perilous Journey, Under the Cover of Night, Truth and Reconciliation Suite, Peril, Leonidas, and Impend.

As much as I like the old music, I want to hear something new. Based on what I’ve heard so far in the various videos 343 posted and the beta, there seems to be a unifying theme that has more brass involved. Now this is an interesting take to a Halo soundtrack and I want to hear more.

I miss the old music it gave the game so much soul but if the new music is good then it either or for me. I would rather new music than a badly done remake of the original. Last thing we need is a dubstep version of Never forget.

I wish Marty came back. I always felt that he was responsible for a lot of Halo’s character. Music really does change everything.

I like the new stuff, but i need to hear the halo monk chant when I’m in the main menu.
Halo 5 guardians beta’s menu music was awful.

I don’t care what music they use for the campaign just have the main halo theme play in the menus.

Or something akin to reach’s main menu tracks.

This, no other composer will be able to capture a true “halo” feel in music, marty created the “halo” feel in the music. Other composers can only hope to come close to something etched into the fan’s minds.

I hope 343 can prove me wrong here.

They should take what worked from Halo 4 (117, Arrival, Revival, etc…), build upon it and go for Halo 2’s metal style. The music wasn’t mixed pretty well in 4 that I could barely hear it in intense firefights.
