When Halo Infinite finally gets a proper progression system PLEASE bring back the actual military ranks from Halo 3/Reach instead of boring numbers. Actual ranks felt much more immersive than just seeing a number next to your name.

The stumbling block is how to sustain military ranks for more than a year or so… let alone a decade.
12 months in and everyone will be a 5 star general.
You can’t just keep adding ranks. A number on the otherhand…

Agreed. Though I’d even take a boring number over the shields that are being displayed now in MCC, they are impossible to tell how far along someone is beyond the initial color/swords, especially for how much grind goes into each level later on.

The average person doesn’t play the same game for 12 months straight though.
This is true, though they could do seasonal resets or with every expansion (and log your previous ranks).
Based on a more technical perspective, the most likely case is that the ranks for each Halo game is internally stored as an integer and that the displayed name is just a character string corresponding to the integer that defines the rank itself.
For me, it doesn’t really matter what the ranks are called as it’s something that doesn’t have a significant effect on the game. In addition to that, it’s usually also very boring rank names that are used with the exception of the final 10 ranks in Halo Reach.
I’d have to disagree. Seeing actual military ranks like Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, ect is much cooler than just a number next to someone’s name. It even fits better with Halo’s military sci-fi setting.
Just join a clan, they don’t need all of that in multiplayer. The narrative already with Spartan Rank makes better sense with the multiplayer canonization.

I agree I want those ranks to return, I also want H3 playlists to return as well. The ability to choose either ranked or social and then choose the gamemode you want to play alongside the ability to vote on maps.

I mean maybe a number for overall level but a rank per season? That could be cool
What about military ranks with a number, basically a prestige/re-up type deal.
