Bring back friendly fire at least for ranked

Overall I’m really enjoying the game, but I’m not a fan of no friendly fire in the matches. There’s literally nothing to stop players from just spamming grenades, rockets, and hammer swings no matter who’s in the vicinity.

With friendly fire off you can be dueling close quarters with an enemy and their teammates can just grenade spam the area or fire a rocket at you both to kill you without any fear of killing their teammate. I hate that part of it because it removes a level of strategic play from the game. In the past you had to be careful with your shots when your teammate was in close proximity to an enemy, I personally much prefer that.

I wouldn’t mind it being turned off for casual but definitely think friendly fire should be on for ranked play. Ranked is meant to be a truer test of skill in the game, and I’d argue having to be smarter with your shots and grenade placement factors more into skill then just being able to throw them wherever without consequence.

It’s like if the NFL decided to just completely drop holding penalties, it would completely change how people went about playing the game.

I had an enemy almost dead when another ran into my face giving the first enemy time to shoot his teammate with a rocket to kill me because he knew his teammate wouldn’t die. I agree completely with friendly fire.

Absolutely. I’d go one further and say it friendly fire needs to be on for social as well. That’s just halo.

As much as I hate dying to friendly fire from dumb teammates or griefers, I definitely feel like it should be on for both ranked and social (maybe optional playlists with it off). I feel like it really promotes not acting like a team. You don’t have to think about what your teammates are doing 'cause it doesn’t matter if they get caught in your fire.

Friendly fire create a lot of problem. You can betray your allie many times before the exclusion’s option is available. And even there, you just have to kill those wounded by the enemy, that won’t be considerate as a betray. You can even hurts your allies and wait the enemy to finish them.

People betray their allies for special weapons, vehicles and for score the flag themselves. Of course, there is the toxic players who betrayal allies for the fun. As for crashes, they are most often involuntary, because barely a vehicle touches an ally that it loses all his shields !

So, the betray problem isn’t omnipresent in the game, but when it happens, it’s very annoying. Delete entirely the friendly fire would be too much, it’s an important part of the Halo gameplay. However, I think there are a lot of solution for the betray problem :

  • Increase the reappearance time for each betrayal (5second, 10second, 15second …)
  • Reduce the score to -1 for each betrayal
  • Propose the exclusion option sooner
  • Prevent a betrayer to pick up a weapon/flag from his teammate
  • Reduce friendly fire for the vehicles to avoid crash
  • Remove friendly fire for melee attack (a player can’t hit an ally by accident)

Personally I see the logic behind the change but I think it takes more from the game than it adds. I’d prefer friendly fire on both ranked and socials if possible as it would curb the nade spam considerably. I think the Forgive/Punish was a good system, even if I could see myself getting really salt once in a while over a betrayal for a power weapon. I wouldn’t be against harsher punishments for repeated betrayals either since the system did always feel a smidge too forgiving.

It wasn’t just better strictly for gameplay either, but also for memorable funny moments. Some of my favourite memories from Halo were from accidentally annihilating a mate I was in VC with. Especially when it was in an insane Rube Goldberg machine of poor choices. No laughter quite like “How did you even do that!?” laughter.
