Brian Reed

I am categorizing this as a halo universe question because whoever the lead writer is will obviously directly affect the story and future expansions of the universe

Honestly, after seeing the community reaction to Brian and how much it has presumably affected him (I mean he deleted his Twitter account, at least that’s what I’ve heard), he will most likely be replaced with someone else. Personally, I didn’t mind him (yes I belong in the rarest of categories of Halo fans), but I understand why others don’t appreciate his work. If I had to choose who I would like to write Halo 6, either Joseph Staten, Eric Nylund, or whoever wrote Halo 4. I forgot his name. But that’s my two cents on that.

Sincerely,

Him deleting his twitter account is more likely to give himself some sanity. I imagine the majority of his incoming tweets were hate-mail.

In general though, the rules of Waypoint make it so we’re not allowed to single out other community members or 343i employees. So, OP, if we wanna discuss the future of Halo’s writing team, you might want to edit your post to make it address the current (or past) story team as a whole, rather than just a single writer.

Otherwise the thread is in danger of getting locked.

He may have been the lead writer, but he was not solely responsible. I think people need to lay off the constant hate towards him.

I figure Eric Nylund is too busy being a successful author probably. Halo 4s lead writer said he was forever done with halo when he quit so the chances of him coming back seem slim.

My apologies I didn’t know that. I only singled him out because his title is the LEAD writer. This post could definitely apply to the team of writers

Based on the lackluster reception Initiation, his Escalation issues, and Halo 5’s story has received, I’d say for someone else to be given a shot. Reed is a pretty good character guy (for the most part). Escalation #7 with Grant and Thorne was a compelling story shedding some light on Thorne’s background with Grant embodying that of a caring friend helping him fully process what happened at New Phoenix. The Monitors Static Carillon and Exuberant Witness nail the eccentric nature of Monitors. Put him on a team crafting characters and I think he’ll shine. But he fumbles when it comes to the big ideas of the Halo story and his relationship with continuity is tenuous at best. Two statements he made on Twitter (of which I didn’t not spam him with hate mail and believe anybody who did is a terrible person) make me question if he should be handling so much of the story.

The first was roughly, “I think it’s funny people think we brought the Didact back just to kill him off.” (Which seeing as he brought back Black Team just to kill them off…logical conclusion to jump too) and the second was quoting an article from Lawrence Kasdan about canon and how it doesn’t mean anything to him with Reed saying, “I love this man.” (Maybe seemingly supporting a “Who cares” attitude to canon when you are creating a main story to the ever-expanding Halo canon isn’t a good way to win favor).

NOT HIM! NOT HIM IN THE SLIGHTEST. He has done almost nothing right.

Shoot him out the airlock, NO! Nuke him from orbit, its the only way to be sure!

I think people put to much emphasis on reed. I don’t follow things to closley on who did what but there’s always more than one person working on story. Their a team, they suceed together and fail together, blame them all or no one.

As with previous topics like this, i follow Grim’s words on threads such as these.

> I’m not a big fan of calling folks out on a personal level, especially when it’s nearly impossible to attribute all challenges faced by a narrative experience - especially game development - on one person. Especially when no one else posting here would actually have any real insight to internal processes. Gonna politely put the kibosh on this thread.
