Just got on Halo 5 after a week of being off and I noticed that Breakout is no longer a ranked playlist. Kinda strange considering it’s probably the most competitive game mode on Halo 5. Any reason why it is no longer ranked?
Just noticed that as well. Definitely strange.
Breakout not ranked = Me very sad
I guess they had to make it unranked to make doubles ranked…i don’t see why though
Are the commendations for Breakout is a still obtainable?
Low population
Doesn’t really matter since its secretly ranked anyways. Just like all the “social playlists”

True man, there is no such thing as a social playlist in H5 yet, sadly.
We don’t know why. Its a confusing choice and a shame because like Actman said it really is one of H5’s best features.
I guess the posts above are right though, it’ll still be ranked in secret.

lol. No. It was removed from competitive play for a reason. It is not at all a good competitive mode. That, in addition to its incredibly poor population (I can only hope because it literally plays nothing like Halo) is why it is no-longer ranked, while Doubles (a Halo staple) rightfully is. They should have done this months ago.

While I do enjoy doubles a whole lot I do feel that Breakout is more competitive. I’m not saying it doesn’t feel like Halo as everyone has there own opinion about how Halo should be played. (Personally I just want everything to go back to Halo 3’s gameplay) The whole 1 life per round aspect in game modes has always had an appeal. Just look at Counter-Strike, one of the most competitive games in existence. Tournaments gross so much money for that game. Honestly I feel like 343 should have kept pushing Breakout as a competitive game mode after Halo 5’s Beta. But sadly they didn’t.

Counter Strike has depth. Breakout doesn’t. They are completely different, aside from that one relatively minor element (one life). Just look at the awful Arena Breakout for an extreme example of that problem. The reason they stopped pushing it, after months of cramming it into HCS where no one wanted it, is that it high level Breakout was just boring and tedious. It’s like playing the opening rush of a slayer and immediately losing if whatever their opening push was happened to counter yours, which requires no shortage of luck. Teams were more than willing to just wait out the clock for a draw if their opponent had any numbers advantage. One shot spawn grenades resulted in no shortage of completely lucky kills (in a one life mode). The maps were all simplistic and extremely linear. The neutral objective clearly had no where near the impact they hoped it would (as opposed to the hugely important objective in CS). There is hardly ever any reason to pay attention to it, because slaying is more efficient anyway. Breakout is basically a mediocre paintball mode. So, naturally, it WAS 343’s premier competitive mode, despite not fitting that description at all.
So now that Breakout joins the list of other gametypes 343 tried to sell us (Infinity Slayer, Regicide, Dominion, Ricochet), can we go back to the classics for Halo 6? Looking at you, BTB and Firefight.

Hmm, now that you think mention it I do see where you’re coming from. Breakout seems to of had potential. But the execution of the gamemode just wasn’t right. Too many factors determining a win or a loss for a team, I recall plenty of times going into Breakout matches with buddies of mine and getting completely destroyed/destroying the other team every other round just because someone got Active Camo, the BR, or some splinter grenades. And most of the time yeah it was the paths the teams took that determined the winners of the round. And while that is also true to Counter-Strike the maps in Breakout just seem to symmetrical for that type of strategy to be interesting to watch. Hence why it wasn’t that popular in HCS. Maybe you are right as too why it is no longer competitive. However I do feel as though there is potential. I just don’t know what 343 could do to improve Breakout either later down the line in Halo 5’s life cycle or in Halo 6. Any ideas?

Really wish Oddball would make a comeback too.

It seems as if 343 are trying to find that next big thing, they’ve made so many new gametypes but none of them have truly gelled except maybe Warzone (ew).
There’s nothing wrong with experimentation, it could really pay off.
I think their approach with Halo 6 should be to have all of the classics then have one featured playlist that gets updated with community suggestions and regularly rotated with other experimental gametypes until we find some real winners.

Honestly going back to Halo 4 I really enjoyed Regicide, just wish it hadn’t replaced Free-for-All. They definetly need all the gamemodes back for 6. Halo 5 is severely lacking in gamemodes. Also Big Team Battle needs actual maps not just forged ones.

I strongly dislike Breakout, so no. Not really. It certainly has more potential than what 343 managed with it in this game, but I just don’t think it fits Halo at all and I would have preferred to get a staple Halo mode (instead of just THREE) at launch. Like Oddball, for example. Breakout was another unnecessary “innovation” from 343, as far as I’m concerned, so I haven’t put much thought into potential improvements.
