Breakout to Return?

Breakout was one of my favorite modes from Halo 5 in the first few years it released. It was a new concept for Halo and very enjoyable, although some changes to it by introducing Extermination left some fans unhappy.

How would you guys feel if Breakout returned in Halo Infinite?

What was Extermination? I only played original Breakout around launch time.

I am very keen to see it return. I’ve been trying to get a game in Halo 5 and my matchmaking always times out. Single life gametypes make for some really thrilling rounds. I’m a big fan of Gears of War and CoD’s Search and Destroy so was really pleased to see Halo having a solid single life gametype.

I liked how the maps looked, like a futuristic sports arena.

Extermination was basically Breakout, but you could respawn albeit with long wait times. If the entire team dies, you win the round. I find it pretty fun but it can get annoying when there’s that one enemy hiding somewhere to keep them from losing

Ah right yeah I could see how that would be annoying. I’d have to play it first, but I feel like the fact you can respawn kinda kills the spirit of single life.

That being said Gears of War has a gametype called Dodgeball which I think is fantastic. If you kill an enemy player, a teammate respawns for your team. So the only way to win is to kill the whole enemy team without them killing one of your players. It makes for some great tug of war play as the team numbers bounce back and forth.

That sounds super fun. I used to play a ridiculous amount of Gears of War 3, maybe I should get back into it one of these days.
And yeah you’re right, it did kinda kill the vibe of single life. It also had shields and replaced your smg/shotgun with an assault rifle.

Extermination also feels a bit like a win-more game mode in my opinion. If you have the early pick you get to control the power weapon and one mistake from the opponent makes you win. Breakout feels more balanced in the way that if your behind a single kill can even the chances.

A part from the return of breakout I really hope that in infinite we can setup the amount of lives again for custom games again (now in H5 it’s either 1 or infinite). We used to have a great custom elimination mode in which you had 3 lives and you either won a round by surviving or getting 10 kills (played as a FFA with 4-6 players). Great balance of risk and reward for playing aggressive or defensive.

I only played a few games of breakout i enjoyed it but felt it under used the sandbox.
More of it would be great and I seems like an efficient mode to develop for and is forge friendly.
I hope it returns.

I wouldn’t be opposed, but I would prefer the return of 1.0 Breakout.

That said everything that we’ve seen (so far) regarding the multiplayer of Halo Infinite seems to highlight the grand scale of battles and the entire sandbox, with even vehicle combat returning standard to normal Team Slayer matches. This is a big contrast the small and enclosed Spartan vs Spartan only combat found in Breakout.

I think 343i are looking to update and maintain Big Team / Team Slayer with a wider use of the sandbox than before to encourage player creativity as well as create a more welcoming and fun matchmaking rather than a serious/hardcore environment.
