I’m terrible at breakout and was wondering if I could get some tips to get better. every other playlist besides FFA i’m ranked in diamond or above, so I’m not completely incompetent. Breakout feels so different from the core mechanics of the game. I keep using the magnum, is it the weapon to use if I don’t have the Br, or should I use the SMG more? How many shots to kill is it with the BR or magnum? I just want to not suck at this game type.
1.Cover + Choke points
2. Be extremely aggressive on the first round (get in their head)
3. Run with a team of friends instead of randoms.
I’m no pro or even ranked well in breakout, but those are some solid tips imo
Add me sometime!
Try the arena version available now? Is more CTF than elimination slayer. At my level anyway. Meh, was alright, better than standard BO.`

I’m gonna go ahead and say this nos before I go any further. I also suck at breakout but also Halo in general. But I think I know why you might not be doing good.

The maps are more straightforward than normal arena maps, so it’s a charge straight at the enemy in most situations. Try and hang back, if you they have to come out of sprint to even begin shooting then you’ll probably kill them.
-
Communication is super important, by knowing where an enemy is or what gun they have you can structure how you are gonna go after them. This goes hand in hand with teamwork, since there are no shields it’s nigh impossible to kill 2 people at once unless you get a lucky grenade in.
-
Weapons, since you don’t have shields marksman weapons are great but if you are gonna be in a corridor then throw a grenade or switch to smg if you’re gonna get first shot. I always try to keep a marksman weapon and an automatic on me. But you probably won’t win if they have an smg close range. Also melees are very useful (for obvious reasons).
-
The objective is your friend, just by grabbing it you put pressure on the enemy and pressure is a catalyst for mistakes. But never try to venture to far from the flag or score zone because if you can’t stop them in time, they’ll score.
-
Finally, don’t let the 1 life thing get to you. The reason you probably aren’t playing as good as normal is because of that. Just calm yourself and play normally and you will do great.
Oh and try flanking! It can change a game!
Do you play by yourself or with friends? This is going to make a big difference even if you’re just a group of two in Breakout compared to playing by yourself. If you do play by yourself though then don’t be afraid to give your allies intel through the game chat. Little blurbs like “Two guys coming on your left side!” will make a hell of a difference when you’ve only got one guy left alive on your team.
Honestly though this game is best played with friends and communicating A LOT with them. Also learning the maps and giving names to the main parts of the map will help a lot too. Me and my cousins always tell each other where we’re going when we play Breakout. “I’m going mid/left/right” “Going for BR/DMR/ETC…” “I’m following you.” “Going for flag to -Yoink- these guys up:”
Anyways here’s some non-communication related tips for Breakout.
-
Spartan charge is pretty powerful in Breakout. Me and my cousins like to call it “The John Cena” even though it isn’t really related to him. On maps like Trench? It’s pretty powerful around the corners and a little unexpected until more people get used to that tactic.
-
If you know they’re rushing your base or ignoring the flag then go for the flag. You can be one guy against four and you can easily win the game if you capture the flag quick enough. Although capturing the flag is best left during the middle of the game when the enemy team is staging very aggressive tactics. It can totally flip the game in your team’s favor or keep the game in your team’s favor if you go for the flag at the right time since the flag is being avoided right now. Communication helps to make this strategy successful though…

Learn where all the Battle Rifles and DMRs are on the currently available maps. This information will help you a lot in a 1V2+ situation. The BR and DMR respawn quick enough after someone uses it so be on the lookout because the BR and DMR are monsters compared to your Pistol in long range and mid range battle. BR will actually overpower the SMG in a close range battle if used quick and accurate enough too. (Aiming in Halo 5 is still kind of weird for me right now so I let my cousin who is comfortable with it take control of the BR most of the time.)
-
That’s another tip I can add. Know your limits and what your allies strengths are and make use of them. I’m good at rushing and close combat while my other cousins are good at long range and defending one position for a long time. So I rush in with a couple Spartan charges to eliminate a few unexpecting Spartans from behind. I normally die every round because of it, but the info I provide by rushing through and behind enemy lines is invaluable in this game type.Even defending one point provides great benefits. Play around your strengths and you guys should achieve good teamwork.
-
Be prepared to change your strategy on the fly. Your chances of victory in this game depend heavily on the act of surprise and switching your strategy up constantly. If your strategy is over powering the enemy team then stick with it, but changing it can be a big game changer. Even if your strategy is just to change the time you throw your grenade.
I would love to provide more solo tips, but I haven’t really played this game type solo and if I did then I’d have trouble visualizing strategies without being able to communicate with my allies 100%.

I mostly play solo, my friends avoid breakout because they don’t like it. I try to hang back and play really cautiously because of the 1 life thing, I have a hard time with the pistol in this gametype.
