Breakout is a dead playlist. There are less than 200 champs. I know quite a few of the champs and just to find a game they have to get people to play on a low ranked alternate account. The way it currently stands I don’t see why it is in ranked.
However, I think there could be changes to improve the playlist. The playlist has potential I just do not think it has struck the right balance. Some people liked to way breakout used to be (not me). I am not sure what the player base was like before the change, but I think that should be accounted for. Please, comment and let me know what changes you think could be made to breakout to improve competitiveness and popularity.
I personally think shields being put in was a step in the right direction. Old breakout just did not feel like Halo to me. Initially, once they made the change to shotguns I hated the new breakout. After playing it for a while I got used to it and came to understand the shotguns are essential to being able to clutch a round you just have to adjust gameplay. I personally can’t really think of anything else that would allow you to do this as a starting weapon. The problem with shotguns is that it turns each round into a corner campy shotgunfest, which is why I think a lot of people do not like it. No radar just makes sense or this playlist. It is supposed to be all about survivability and awareness. I think with no radar you will have less kids crouching in a spot with their shotgun waiting for people to appear on the radar and make players play more conservatively. I think some experimenting could also be done with power weapons because as it currently stands most placed weapons are ignored. At least put one thing players will want to control on the map. Give me a railgun with 1 or 2 shots or something. The light rifle is pretty good for the playlist. Also, no person with a shotgun wants an AR why even put them on the map.
Change Flag Pull back to Flag Push - Remove Radars or decrease range immensely - Remove Starting Shotguns - Place 4 Power Weapons around spawns i.e. Shotgun, DMR, Silenced AR, Plasma Caster, etc. (I’m basing this off of Operators from R6 Siege) - Replace Starting Shotgun with proper weaponry (Storm Rifle, SMG, AR, etc.) This could be another debate/argument - Return Classic Maps and keep 2.0 Maps as well - Remove Spartan Charge or tune to do less damage (maybe balance with more knockback) - Possibly add more maps - Add different types of Breakout (Also another debate/argument)Personally, I liked the original Breakout, but here is my Breakout 1.5
I love the new Breakout, specially the full shields option, it makes the playlist viable for solo players.
The flag pull incourages fast action for both teams, you need to show up and risk yourself, makes the rounds more intense.
If the radar wasn’t available, it would be way more frustating, because you can be rekt by a shotgun without noticing the enemy, with the radar, you have the option to fight back.
The Shotgun is something I’m torn. I like it, but at the same time it creates some issues as well. I wouldn’t mind if they remove it.
So glad 343 put all that dev time in a failed mode when we could’ve maybe had a better Arena map pool… or dev BTB, or staple gametypes like KOTH or Oddball, or a better Campaign…
They need to take what works and focus on knocking those portions of the game out of the park! Warzone has benefits of being in the game, REQs make money, but integrate the mode into the BTB environment and offer traditional BTB and WZ BTB to reincorporate dev BTB maps and consolidate the design vision.
H5 tried to do too much and it shows… some great ideas came from it, but they need to streamline to improve the quality of the content they put out!
Me and my friends were original breakout champs, and high onyx tier or champions in other playlists. (inb4 post hidden for stat flaming) We barely even play h5 anymore. The original breakout was nearly perfect, and that is my opinion as a competitive player.
Unfortunately what works for the top 200 players doesn’t work for the 100k or so other players. It doesn’t make sense for 343 to appeal to me if im going to buy the game regardless, and if I dont, big whoop, theres hundreds of thousands of other people they need to cater to. Dont get me wrong, I love the halo franchise, but im not spending money on req packs or halo merchandise or social games like halo odst, and neither are my friends who are very competitive players.
Original breakout was a very competitive playlist so it probably doesnt resonate well with the average player in the same sense that fiesta slayer, or swat dont resonate well with me.

I feel like the original concept of breakout was amazing for a competitive playlist. The team should push for power weapons and the flag should only be in place to avoid campers or to force the opponents out of there covers. I do actually agree completely and the current breakout isn’t what breakout was supposed to be.

I do disagree on pulling back the flag to your base mainly because both teams needs to get to the flag quickly. Breakout was supposed to have these intense battles where you are waiting for the opponents t make there move.

Wow, I think it is the exact opposite, with the flag pull, you have two objectives to be aware the enemies and the flag, it is very intense.
In the breakout 1.0 no one were interested on the flag, it was too risky and not worth picking it up.

That’s the point though. It’s not capture the flag. The flag was only meant to be used to draw out a hiding opponent. For example in a 2 vs 1 the outnumbered player could just hide and wait for the time to run out. In that situation the other team grabs the flag and forces the camper to make a move.
This topic has been beat to death in feedback thread. The issue for me is that this is a feature that was sold as part of the original game and it has been changed into something different. If 343 took the slayer playlist and added rounds and removed shields but still called it slayer would that be ok? Of course not because it wouldn’t be slayer anymore. If they want to try new things and add new playlists that’s great. Variety is great. But don’t mess with existing playlists. Especially ones that you spent so much time advertising as the new big thing. End rant.

I do agree. They have worked hard on Breakout to be a super competitive playlist and now it’s something completely different. They did advertise it as it was the most competitive arena gametype every introduced into Halo. I did play some of the original Breakout and I had some fun doing it.
The Flag Push unlike the flag pull would make even more possibilities with making breakout maps mainly because you don’t have to run to the flag and return it. You had to go through the enemy lines to capture it and player location knowledge was more important.
The original breakout was better than the -Yoink- we got it just feels nooby having a shotty at start that’s why i haven’t played breakout in quite a longtime since they changed it.
Shotty starts seems so broken to me… when you get up 1-2 magnum shots on someone, they just go hide around a corner and you can’t push them…! It dis-incentivizes aggressive play and rewards corner camping and crouch-walking.
What was the rationale for the shotty starts…?
Was the SMG just too spammy? maybe magnum/AR starts would work?
