Breaking habits of bad play?

I’ve recently set a goal to increase my k/d over 1.0 (currently .71 arena, .6 cumulative) and have noticed a few things about myself.

First, I chase… A lot. Every video I’ve seen and tip I’ve read tells me this is bad, m’kay.

Second, I tend to rank higher in assists over kills. I’m thinking this is because I have a tendency to aim body versus head.

When playing solo (arena and warzone) I notice that I am more mindful of my bad habits, actively try to correct them and see better spreads. The second I party up with others all that goes out the window and I’m back to a flailing meat shield and bullet sponge for my team! I feel like I’m on the right track with being more cognizant of how I play, but that there’s an angle I’m missing…

Tl;dr want to stop dragging down the tone of the neighborhood. What worked for you?

Alright so here are my tips, I went from .3 in Reach to 1.25 in no time once I got my stuff together.
Here we go:

  1. Utilize crouching, Youd be surprised how often people see nothing on their radar and run around without using their peepers. Especially crouch if someone is chasing you this way they have to search for you and you can get the jump on them.
  2. This one is controversial and you might not want to try it until youre a bit better but crouching during a headshot match can save you
  3. Stay next to cover, nothing will kill you faster then running out in the open, poke your head around cover and be cautious especially in Warzone.
  4. Understand when to avoid combat. This is the biggest one, if you see a guy with a rocket launcher AVOID HIM. Avoid any combat that you know you have the disadvantage from.
  5. Learn to headshot in Swat, this is where I learned in Halo Reach and it changed everything.
  6. Learn the power weapons. Understand where and when they spawn and make sure oyu lock them down
  7. Finally, Lock down an area, the greatest kill streaks come from controlling an area. If oyu run back and forth across the whole map you’ll be picked off constantly, instead find a building or area and bunker down, defense is always easier than offense. Control the area and once the enemy team becomes aggravated with you relocate and lock down another area for a while. There are so many Halo tips alot of it just comes form personal experience and preference, simply put to get better you need to play often

man those are some pretty good tips, gonna put that in my toolkit

Don’t just use grenades as kill bubbles. Use them to cut off a pathway to give yourself enough time to recharge your shields, if you know that someone is coming from that direction. You can also use them (Especially Splinter grenades) to separate your enemies from each other. This’ll make them easier to manage than having them both getting at you.

The number 1 tip I can think of for boosting k/d is to just prioritizing surviving over getting the kill. The instant you feel like a gun fight is not going to end with you winning you should get the heck out of there and look to stay alive. This is made easier by both staying near cover and always having a plan to get out if you initial plan goes south. Also one thing you can do, while it won’t make you many friends is to use your teammates as bait to find out where the enemies are located and kill them while they are shooting at your teammate.

All great points!! The only thing that I would emphasize, would be the team work.

About the chasing thing:

Alot of times when someone runs away from you they are a shot or two down in your duel. They will back off to reset the encounter, recharge shields and set up an ambush for you.

Don’t chase them the way they went, this gives them an advantage as they know exactly where you will be, and you dont know their exact position/status. Always try to intercept them from a different route than they way they went, or disengage them and start a new fight where you could have the upper hand.

One of my bad habits is throwing a grenade when my magazine runs out. One should start a fight with a grenade, or end a fight with a grenade. Throwing it in the middle of a fight is basically like giving up.

  • Keep the cross hair at head level - Fire a good extra shot or 2 at the end of the encounter even if the enemy breaks LOS - Play your life - Save your boost to evade - Slow down your rate of fire (magnum) - Learn Halo 5 Parkour (gives you faster routes to adventitious positions) - Bounce nades off flat or right angled surfaces. (Curved or radius objects make it hard to predict the bounce)Know your style and your role. I struggle with the latter especially when Solo queing. In previous games I exclusively assumed one of two roles.

Entry fragger:

Aggressive pressure orientated play style. First one to enter an enemy controlled area, always pressuring the enemy by pushing the enemy out of position. Burst damage on entry. Paired with another aggressive player.

Sniper:

Control the sniper, Primarily focused on creating space between my team and the enemy. Roaming control of power positions with great sight lines. Awareness of aggro teammates habits and attempt to support. Almost always off radar.

Unfortunately Neither of the play styles I just mentioned are great for Halo in general unless you are on the positive side of a large skill gap.

Recently I have started adopting a role that is new to me. I call it aggro support. In 4v4 arena we like to start with a default 2x2 split.

Each 2 man team assumes “aggro point” and “support rear” role. Typically the better shot roles point. Even in the event that all 4 players are heading to a single location we still try to run in pairs and remember who is point and who is support.

I understand that this is a very low resolution unoriginal strategy. What I can’t understand is why I haven’t been playing like this from the get go. These days when I solo que I immediately try to assume “support rear” role for who ever is running point, regardless of the mic situation. If “aggro point” player gets face rolled Ill assume point.

The way I am playing is still wrong and borderline terribad, but I feel like it is an improvement from were I was at. I think that understanding you and your teams strengths / weaknesses and adjusting your roles as a result of that understanding leads to better play.

Just the act of conceptualizing the Arena Meta and identifying what works and what doesn’t in real time is a great start. The next step would be to grind out the identified weaknesses or develop a strategy that insulates the weakness from exposure.

Something as simple as small adjustment such as keeping the sniper rifle model to the right of enemy player model for better visibility or recognizing that a high traffic route may not be the best way to get to that better position on the map.

If something isn’t working, change it up mid game. Its a great tactic not a lot of people use. Ive won many swat games when being far behind because ill just shout out to the guy getting farmed to find a corner and just sit there.

Getting farmed, I like that

Hey thanks everyone for the input. I’ll read it a couple more times to internalize it. I’ll take it for a spin next time I’m in arena and report back.
