<mark>PLEASE READ THE OP BEFORE POSTING</mark>
Hello all. I would like to say a few things before we get started:
- This is “How could we”, not “should it be”. Please don’t post “Sprint doesnt work lololololol n00b u want sprint to work but it can’t lol” or anything similar.
- Just because you were there when Halo CE was anounced and you have every single halo game(even the cancelled ones) doesn’t make your opinion weight any more than others’.
- Just because you don’t like an idea doesn’t mean it’s bad. Present a valid and logical argument.
Noe that we’ve got that over with, here is my proposal:
“Sprint” is a base ability similar to a Spartan Ability. It gives a minor 30% boost in speed for several seconds. Unlike previous instalments, you can fire sidearms and automatics while sprinting at the cost of increased spread and recoil and a slower reload time. What this does is not discourage aggressive plays while providing a more tactical approach. Sniper taking out your team? Flank him using sprint and take him out(tactical). Power weapon just spawned? Rush the spawn or the enemy’s base to prevent them from getting it.
Being able to shoot while sprinting removes the “run or gun” feel of Halo 4 or CoD, but the inability to fire your BR or CC while sprinting makes it so you have to think about moving from one position to the other and naturally relegates these weapons to mid range.
And yes, you will not be able to sprint and fire a power weapon at the same time, unless it is a Close-range weapon.
Alright… Now for brainstorming other solutions/ideas.
We don’t want it to work, and it will never work. Two abilities that I think would improve are good for Halo are: Double jump, being able to double jumps on walls (Jump once, you hit the wall, you jump a second time). You can go up and down between two walls like Mario because it improves Halo’s vertical play. This feature would only be available on special walls as we still want normal trick jumps.
The other thing that could work is sliding where you are able to shoot while you slide. Shooting while you slide is a must. Going out a plunge you could choose to do 3 things, just walk out, slide and still have the momentum from the slide going kind of in a straight line or jump.
I am against any other ability in Halo.
>Faster base movement speed
>Thruster Pack as default movement ability
>Higher base jump height
>Possibly a ledge-grabbing function (I’m in two minds on this one)
Voila, a game with great movement and no cumbersome, weapon-holstering mechanics such as Sprint.
The main reasons people are against sprint, and ways to fix them, are as follows:
-
- It creates randomness. It seems that this label is getting slapped on everything in Halo 4, but it is true that people may miss a sniper shot or a grenade stick that would have gotten a perfectly executed kill normally. To fix this, it could be made that there is a short, visibly telegraphed charge-up period before sprinting starts. This would remove that particular problem by making it apparent that a person is about to sprint.
- It stretches maps. I see no problem with this, but it could be tweaked so that using Sprint causes a drain or weakening in shields, possibly by drawing energy away from the reactor. This means people would not sprint on small maps due to the fact it will have a great impact on their survivability in the upcoming skirmish.
- It allows a quick getaway option. See above, or make people leave Sprint when shot.
- It turns ‘run and gun’ into ‘run or gun’. I personally disagree with this, as Halo 4 combat functioned exactly the same as previous games in it’s basic form. You strafed, jumped, shot. You still strafe, jump and shoot. Sprint is just a method of getting from point A to point B faster than leisurely jogging around with a gun pointed at nothing…
- It just isn’t Halo. These people are what I call ‘nostalgians’, people who don’t want change *because they like it just the way it was in Halo 3 forever thank you very much.*Yoink them.

Did you guys even read the first thing I said? This is brainstorming on making it work, not if it should be in it. I specifically stated that.
Double jumping/Wall jumping doesn’t feel like it belongs in Halo the same way you feel like sprint doesn’t belong in Halo.

Not to mention it’s straight out of Titanfall.

No. You don’t want it to work. The main reason I started the debate was to see if people could come up with solutions to rework the concept. Sprint is similar to boarding vehicles and dual-wielding: its not something that was in Halo CE. And just because it didn’t work the first time doesn’t mean it can’t work.

My sprinting while shooting idea is similar to the Run and Gun kit, but its q base ability.

No. I have never played titanfall and I am not interested in that kind of game at all. I think of a PC game I played a little bit back in the day, the game is called Urban Terror.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfd7W3If_eM You see all this Mario Jumping? I am imagining something like that in Halo.
Halo has lots of vertical movement that we should improve.

I have been on this forum for years, and I have seen all kinds of ideas. If you want sprint to function as sprint it will always have it’s flaws.

To use an analogy, a group of chefs are discussing a new restaurant, and you’ve just walked up to them and posed the question “how could we best add dog feces to the menu?” Sure, the response “we’re not adding that, it’s terrible” isn’t technically within the limits of your question, but it’s still the only sane answer.

I don’t see how one can compare a game mechanic to canine fecal matter.

Slight typo there. What you meant to write is “it’s a staple of the shooter genre which has been used in countless games before and is not tied to any particular game/franchise, least of all Titanfall, which has absolutely zero originality. Complaining about it being copied makes as much sense as complaining Halo is copying guns from Killzone, or 3D environments from Doom, and I would never say something as silly as that.”

In which case you should write to your English teacher, and ask why they did such a poor job of explaining to you the basic tools of the English language.

And what you meant to say is: “I am being condescending and patronising, offering little to no constructive data with regards to the OP’s specifications, and I will kindly refrain from doing so in the future if I want to be respected by my peers.”
Furthermore, the mentioned features are much more specific than the notions of ‘guns’ and ‘3D’. You might as well say that CoD rips off of Tetris because they both use pixels, or consoles. Plus there’s the fact that they’re both on Xbox 1, (well, Titanfall is also on PC, but that’s neither here nor there…) and both sci-fi shooters under Microsoft’s wing, people will start drawing comparisons and criticising, regardless of whether or not it’s been used in countless games before. It will be seen as unoriginal anyway. And given the appearance of ground-pounding as a Spartan ability, (note how I did not say it is a rip-off of Mario, as the two are sufficiently removed from each other), I think we have enough expansion of the vertical sandbox as it is, as people will doubtless be finding cliffs to leap off in order to execute the manoeuvre.

Or they could tweak it by changing “dog” to “civet” and win lots of awards.
I, too, would prefer to see sprint gone . . . but since it is overwhelmingly likely to stay, I think the OP’s suggestion is better than tirelessly whining about its presence.
There are two primary characteristics of sprint that make it bad for Halo (or any game where kill times are not nearly instantaneous):
-
You cannot perform combat actions while sprinting. This is the source of the map design issues. The map must be designed to account for sprint, but that requires that it be designed around non-combat movement speed - necessarily making the design of the map during actual combat less optimal.
-
It is not unlimited. This is the source of the “move-faster-but-travel-slower” issue that plagues H4.
Both of these can be tweaked.
-
Rather than disabling combat actions, make sprint disable aim assist. Now the expected behavior that sprint induces some combat penalty is retained, but combat is not prohibited. You can still chase that guy down for that last headshot. You can sprint-jump across that gap while still shooting. And if you’re a better shot than your opponents, sprint can now enhance the skill gap rather than reduce it because you’ve given it offensive capabilities.
-
Make it unlimited. Assuming you’re a decent enough shot, you can travel all the time at sprint speeds. Make those lesser peons have to come out of sprint to hit anything.
Those are my suggestions.
> >Thruster Pack as default movement ability
Hmm, but wouldn’t that make strafing pointless? I don’t like it. If it was in specific playlists only, then fine. But not if it was default right across the board.
> >Possibly a ledge-grabbing function (I’m in two minds on this one)
Don’t think thats a very healthy feature to implement into Halo. I don’t see why it needs to exist.

My original post explained why I was doing this. Why are you asking a question that’s already been answered?
-
I’m already respected enough by the people whose opinions I care about, and am not going to modify my behaviour to suit you.
-
Look up the word “hyperbole”, and understand how it can be used in conjunction with the analogy.
-
Look up argumentum ad populum.
Finally, a general point not linked to any specific section of text; your prose is full of forced verbosity. It doesn’t suit you.

Plus, civet poop.

Well, neither Reach’s Evade nor Halo 4’s Thruster Pack replaced strafing, it simply complemented movement-based gameplay by adding another option. You still had to strafe while you weren’t evading. It’s worth nothing that I’m advocating a system similar to what we’ve already seen in Halo, not a Gears-style evade system with infinite uses and no cooldown timer.
I never used to like ledge-grabbing systems, but Crysis 2 made me think it could work. Vertical movement was incredibly fluid, it added a whole new level to the game. Ever since then I’ve wondered what it would be like in a non-twitch arena shooter like Halo.
