Article on BR’s sideline role in the sandbox
> The Battle Rifle is without a doubt the most disappointing weapon of the bunch. Let’s compare it to the LR. Both kill in exactly the same amount of time when fired from the hip and require the same amount of trigger pulls. Okay, let’s look at how they compare while scoped in. Holy hell. On one hand you have the super deadly four-shot-kill, pinpoint accurate, holy beam from the heavens and on the other hand you have the BR’s inaccurate, random, five-shot-kill mess which becomes more inaccurate the further the target is. And THEN, 343 decided to throw some recoil on top of that as if it weren’t enough. Let’s also not forget that both the Carbine and DMR will kill faster than the BR. So after hearing all of that, why on Earth would anyone want to use the BR now? Nostalgia? Should we call it the Nostalgia Rifle from now on?
At 45 seconds, the DMR user confronts a BR user in the BR’s intended range. Now the BR is supposed to excel here due to its increased aim assist and burst firing. However, that isn’t the case in this encounter.
The DMR user gets the first shot off, and then the BR user hits the DMR user as the latter fires his second shot. All shots connect from here for both sides, with the BR user getting 3 shots off before the DMR user is able to kill him with 5 shots.
Notice the shield of the DMR user. He is hit 3 times and is rendered 2-shot (‘half shield’).
If the BR user had gotten the first shot as he dropped down, the DMR user would have been 1-shot with no shields because he would have only gotten 4 shots off (which would have killed in Halo 2). But since the BR is a 5sk, the DMR guy still would have killed the BR user (or tied) because neither of them missed their shots in this encounter. The only ways the BR would have won in this scenario is if the DMR user missed, if the BR user out-strafed him, or if the BR user got the first two shots. Even with the first shot he would be looking for a mutual kill at best.
As it stands, the only way a BR will beat a DMR is if:
-The DMR user misses two shots (it still outperforms it if it misses 1)
-The BR user gets the first 2 shots, which will more likely result in a mutual kill
-Both players are 1 shot and they can both only see the other’s chest
According to the frame data, the BR seems to have the short end of the stick…
