The BR undoubtedly has won the hearts of the majority of the fanbase most can agree on. The DMR has also won the hearts of maybe not the majority but it’s not losing by much. So, I came up with an idea, why not combine both into one rifle? The TC-85 CR combines both in that when hip-fired it uses precise 3-round-bursts and possess a scope that can be switched from 2-3x. Also when in scope the fire-mode switches to semi-auto similar to the light rifle, but isn’t nearly so powerful.
What do you guys think? Go or no go?
EDIT: CR’s New settings:
Rather than a scope-switch for fire-mode changing, the new way to blend the BR and DMR together would be this:
-2.5x scope (non-variable)
-Automatic Fire-mode (Comparable to Halo CE magnum so it seems semi-auto, but isn’t, and is much slower).
-4sk (RoF reduced to match a 1.40 killtime)
-Bayonet is mounted on this weapon specifically for deadlier melee attacks.
I’m tempted to click the bottom option, but I feel harsh. The thing is the BR is an icon and replacing it with the Combat Rifle would displease many and I don’t think the DMR fans would be pleased either if the DMR was removed. I think the best compromise is just to keep both weapons in the game. I’m not sure why there is any drama about there being 2 UNSC utility weapons in the game. If you have loadouts people being split as to which weapon they prefer is a good thing.
I wouldn’t mind having such a weapon in the game though. The light Rifle is already kind of filling this niche. But the difference could be that 1) it could only have a 2x scope and 2) it could be a rapid fire semi-auto zoomed in with a ROF similar to the Boltshots single fire mode and the damage per bullet is no different switching between firing modes.
I’d like to see a weapon that bridges the gap between the precision rifles more organically. Say, something like the original CE pistol which was technically an automatic weapon which you could handle in this way or another just by changing how you laid down your shots.
But that’s just one suggestion, and honestly I’d be happy with any blending so long as the difference didn’t lay in a simple switch (ex. scope or press up on the Dpad to switch weapons) but in how you used the weapon in a much more organic context (ex. tap RT for precision shot, hold RT for a bullet that spits 3 ways for the same overall damage with a couple weapon-sub variants that adjust the sensitivity between the two firing modes.)
I am kind of torn. On the one hand I really like the DMR both aesthetically and functionally, but I accept the BR has a little more personality with the burst fire.
I would say just keep the BR and leave it as a true jack-of-all trades(master of none) and leave the single shot longer range niches to the alien weapons like the N’ifle or the LR.
Not just to trim the fat in the sandbox on the human side but this would apply to the the whole sandbox.
I am SOOOOOOO tired of the BR/DMR tango that has dominated majority of online halo matches for the last 4 games. i really hope 343 opens up the weapons locker and give us a variety of balanced weapons and Halo X1 isn’t the BR/DMR shooting range #5.

This. So much this. It adds depth to weapons, and it removes the need for having two different weapons that can easily be combined into one.
Citing Halo CE again, the Plasma Rifle was much more accurate if you tapped the trigger instead of holding it, and had a headshot modifier. Meaning it could be used in a Carbine or an SMG fashion.
