Boss health bars

Boss health bars should be disabled for heroic and legendary difficulty.

You mean… When we need them most?

Didn’t need them for Tartarus, don’t need them now

Disabling them adds nothing to that experience. It doesn’t make it harder however it would make it far more annoying.

Unnecessary

I don’t think they’ve even been proven to be a necessary feature, so I don’t know how the lack of them could be determined to be “annoying.” That seems subjective. They seem annoying to me to begin with. Their removal would be less annoying to me. And it makes perfect sense for the harder difficulties.

If anything it could be a skull–a skull I would activate on every playthrough.

It’s just visual information. They weren’t necessary or unnecessary. As a matter of fact, they could’ve said “nah, that’s a stupid idea” and devised mechanics that make the apparent health of a boss or enemy immediately readable. Think of nearly-dead Ghosts, for example.

My guess is that they have relevance to however their boss encounters work. I don’t know how they work, since it’s only a trailer and we only saw one, but I can’t think of another reason to add them in the first place.

Health bars were an idea from 30 years ago when coding was simpler. Then, a later idea was to have trigger actions by the boss which you could use to know of your progress in killing it, and that includes the boss getting more angrier.

With newer games, I don’t like the health bar and, to an extent, the boss changing its actions as progress goes. But, I think I’m open for some type of changes to the environment or how the boss interacts. They could also simply just have weapon or equipment spawns that assist the boss to increase difficulty as time goes on.

Im just going to point it out that i do agree with being able to disable health bar at least.
There is a very huge different with having health bar vs not on bosses and has been proven in many different games such as Gears 5 and Monster Hunter: World
Lets take e.g Monster hunter: World.

No health bar:

  • You’re more terrifed of the boss
  • You dont know when its gonna die
  • Less aggressive in the fight
  • More strategy fights
  • etc

With Health bar

  • Not terrified of the boss
  • You know when its gonna die
  • Very aggressive in the fight
  • Less to none strategy in the fight
  • etc

Had a friend that used a mod on Monster hunter that showed how much health the monster had and it made it less intresting to fight them since we knew exectly how much health it had and we could finish it off with an emote that did 1 dmg.

Talking about Gears 5 that has health bar on the enemies. the community didnt care much about it at first but later hated it. it made the fights boring. luckly they added a way to toggle it on or off.

anyway we didnt need health bar for Tartarus in Halo 2.
I dont really care much if health bars are in the game, they can easly make it toggle on or off

I like boss health bars personally. Not sure how else you would represent/keep track of damage you’ve dealt to a (sub)boss.

Don’t care much about them since it’s only for one enemy and not the entire screen. I’d prefer to disable them though but there is more important stuff than a HP bar for the occasional mini boss.

there should be an option to turn it off

also its not like we had them in halo 2

I have to admit I was like “wth is that a health bar??”, it felt so weird. I really don’t want to see those in game. Makes it look awfully arcade (if that’s the correct word), extremely disturbing visually. I don’t want to know how well I’m doing, I want to be alert and excited about the fight until the enemy drops dead. I’ve loved nearly everything what we’ve seen but that thing is as disturbing to me as the shield recharge animation with the big hexagons all over the screen was a year ago… I hated it.:grimacing:

I don’t think it has a purpose, but it kind of makes me feel that I’m fighting a different brute, not the same patrol brute that walks around with “grunt shields”

The happy medium is allowing to turn them off in the options. Allow those who want them to keep them, and those who don’t to turn them off.

The boss UI should be improved since everyone (majority) in Halo isn’t comfortable with them. If they’re gonna keep them, they should make it blend more. For example, in the trailer, there isn’t really transparency to it. It sticks out too much and that bothers me. Rather, they could also just have an option to disable it. Though I feel like it would just be a disadvantage to disable it. Not sure, I feel it needs work though.

I do agree that a Boss Health Bar in Halo is really weird. But the backlash is meh. For anyone who’s played RPGs or Dark Souls, you’d know that with or without a health bar, when you know that you’re nearing the end, you either become more careful, which mostly results in victory, or more ignorant, which mostly results in your death. There’s also visual indicators when a boss is nearly defeated, like when they look tired, their speed is slower, or they become more aggressive. All in all, I see a toggle being harmless, perhaps a Skull? It would satisfy both sides.

^This guy knows what’s up^. Not having a health bar would make the game feel much more immersive, but i like your idea about keeping the health bar until you reach heroic or legendary.

The option to disable it could make for an interesting Skull. I play with Grunt Birthday Party Skull on almost 24/7, and some people might want to have no health bars.

Having the armor fly off or make the boss visibly start to struggle, could work but i’m no expert.
