Boss Fights!

What kind of boss fights would you like to see in Halo Infinite? Halo 5 was kind of a bummer in that is was just the Warden Eternal over and over and over again just in varying numbers.

Personally - if the Flood Returns - I would like to fight a Gravemind. Not sure what that would look like or how it would play out but it would still be epic.

Frankly, Halo has never done Boss Fights well. What the games have done well is big dramatic set-pieces, i.e. the Warthog runs in Halo 1 and 3, the bridge crossing in Halo 2, the Scarab fights in Halo 3 (which I guess were kind of boss fights, so maybe they did those one right), the Ghost run in Halo 4, etc. In an open-world type game, those kind of events could happen organically which would make for some great moments. I’d rather have them focus on emergent game-play like that then try to shoehorn in yet another boss fight (unless they bring Scarabs back).

I agree, Halo shines brightest with it’s set pieces. However, like the Scarab fight, there are going to be those moments where you have to face off against and over powering enemy before you can progress. Now I’m okay with a staged boss fights that have multiple phases - Scarab fight in Halo 2. I think Halo has many great opportunities for some epic boss fights in part due to the set pieces but you’re right they need to be done well.

Thought! IF Halo Infinite is open world - I think it would be cool to have roaming bosses that you can track down and try to take down. Example, a scarab that can be tracked and fought that offers several rewards.

Having some sort of boss fight would be nice. It was an OK factor in Halo 2 fighting Tartarus at the end on Legendary, but it was more of a “hope Johnson hits him with 3 Beam shots” so you can just try pumping a few rounds into him before his shield came back.

Properly, I think Halo could have a few decent boss fights emerge and would he cool if it had some sort of puzzle element to it. Only thing is, it would need to work both on co-op and solo. So nothing really time-based, although I still love the idea of it happening in some capacity.

If flood firefight is gonna be a thing in Infinite i hope they make the flood juggernaut from H2 a boss. Also, if they make like spartan ops with missions from previous games with different teams and stuff I hope we can re-fight prophets, tartarus, the heretic leader, Didact, 343 guilty spark and warden.
I would also like if they made prehistoric beasts like t-rex or aerodactyls as animal bosses.

The Flood Juggernaut would be more of a mini boss or random rare enemies to fight against. Meanwhile, the Ancient Gravemind would be a main boss that is the Flood. Prehistoric-looking beasts could perhaps be mini bosses.

If there is a boss battle (after Halo 5 I hope there isn’t) then I hope its more like Halo 2 where you face off with an important character with an actual interesting mechanic (Regret fight and boarding his chair to beat him to death) or the Halo 3 Scarab fights which are big and require some semblance of tactics.

The Warden Eternal ‘boss’ fight spam in Halo 5 was one of the things I hated most about the campaign.

About the boss fights, I’m thinking that if there’s 12 missions, then the bosses will appear in every three missions (bosses appearing in Missions 3, 6, 9, and 12). I know I sure was thinking the Gravemind as an example of a boss that would be in Halo Infinite and I’m thinking the Gravemind would be fought in Mission 9 at one point after fighting the Flood mini-bosses (Flood mini-boss being the Flood Abomination after battling two Flood Juggernauts if the Flood Abomination gets to appear in Halo Infinite but if not, then four Flood Juggernauts are the mini-bosses of the mission where the Gravemind is the main boss).

Here’s some ideas for bosses I thought of:

[Mission 3]
Mini Boss: Stimbabs (either four or six of them)
Main Boss: The Scarab (Its controlled by Brutes and the un-named new covenant species that replaces the Elites for the enemy covenant side). Ghosts, Banshees, and Wraiths being used by the enemy covenants will be called out by the Scarab driver at certain times. Plasmatic-powered vehicles made by the un-named new non-covenant beast species (that beast species will also drive these vehicles) will also be called out to battle by the Scarab driver.

[Mission 6]
Mini Boss: Two Sharquois (controlled by the un-named new non-covenant species)
Main Boss: A Cyborg Beast who is of the un-named new non-covenant beast species origin (Phase 1 - The Super Tank which is driven by the Cyborg Beast and the passengers being the Brutes; Phase 2 - The Cyborg Beast himself who will use his weapons and melee to attack the player and his allies and when the boss creature himself has dropped to a certain health amount, he will call for a pack of Drones to attack the player and his allies)

[Mission 9]
Mini Boss: Either the Flood Abomination (If it appears in Halo Infinite) or the Flood Juggernauts in the amount of either two or four (the two Flood Juggernauts would be either a fight before the mini boss or the first phase of the mini boss if the Flood Abomination appears in Halo Infinite but if not, then it’s either two or four Flood Juggernauts being the mini boss)
Main Boss: The Ancient Gravemind (at frequent times, it spawns Infection Forms, Combat Forms, Carrier Forms, Flood Tanks, and occasionally, Flood Juggernauts)

[Mission 12]
Mini Boss: A Forerunner-controlled Sharquoi
Main (and Final) Boss: A slightly powerful promethian master who sends out his minions consisting of the un-named new non-covenant species and the minions also consist of the enemy covenant side (there would be a lot of Grunts, Un-named Elite replacement species, Drones, Brutes, and Hunters). He will also be doing some attacking and he’ll occasionally teleport.

yall already know we need 15 more warden eternal bos fights

WE’VE GOT WARDEN ETERNAL… FOR ETERNITY!!!

yeah, warden was dull and boring, scrab, monitor, tatarus were such fun bosses to fight.

The Warden Eternal was the worst example of Halo’s boss fights, but like a lot of others have already said, Halo has never been great at boss fights.

I remember fighting Regret in Halo 2 being the corniest, goofiest and most aloof part of that entire game. It disrupted the flow of combat and the visceral first person action the game was best at in favor of, “hang on to his floaty chair and punch him repeatedly until he expires.”

I think the best boss-type sequences in Halo come down to having to fight more regular enemies and having the freedom to engage them largely as you see fit. Hunters and sword Elite’s, distributed appropriately, are great bosses and can provide ample challenge on high difficulties and placed in difficult bottlenecks in campaign missions. For an even more grandiose boss type fight, Halo 3 nailed it with the Scarab. The only dictate the game really put on you with the Scarab was that you needed to take it down. You could dance around with it as long as you wanted; you could either board it on foot or blow it apart in a Hornet. More player freedom, less bullet-spongey and ridiculous.

Halo is not really known for its great bosses but what kind of boss or mini-boss type of sections I would hope? Well perhaps simply machinery from covenants side like the scarabs when in more of a regular combat, other than that, perhaps some larger flood forms. Not too large, mind you, not in such levels as the gravemind given it would be absurd and devaluating the threat of such figures, no no no, perhaps more of a size level of elephant (the vehicle) for example that you can face with vehicles and few allies.

Surely there could be bigger bosses but those would require bringing in bigger guns, spaceships as example, can be boss type opponents if you can commandeer a ship yourself.

I think you nailed it with this comment right here. The Scarab fights were fun because they were large scale and offered different means of accomplishing the goal. Boss fights - even in games outside of Halo - a lot of times just boil down to a bullet sponge enemy you need to whittle down until they die. Fighting a boss that changes tactics based your tactics would be a nice way to offer variety and force you to change how you approach and enemy. Like if you are trying to pick them off from a distance with a sniper - they can drop a shield blocking your shots or if they are a forerunner - changing the environment (summoning force fields or materializing barriers) forcing you into a CQB fight. Just something that offers variety.

Another good idea to see about of the boss fights is that the main bosses (final boss included) can use the boss health bar.

I want to fight gravemind bc we’ve never actually fought him before. Sure, killing the flood is technically fighting him bc he’s a combination of them, but I want to fight him as he is in H2.

I think Halo does boss battles best when they’re not presented as obvious boss battles. Think of the first time you encounter Hunters in CE, pretty much every Scarab fight. I also agree it does giant setpieces perfectly.

So, how about we get back to that? Maybe have Brute Chieftains that have some more tactics than just rushing you which take a bit more effort to kill. Stuff like that.
