Boss battles in Halo 4

Not going to get my hopes up, but there have been bosses in past Halo games. In Halo 2 there were 3 bosses: The Heretic Leader Elite, The Prophet of Regret, and Tartarus. In Halo 3 there was 1 boss: 343 Guilty Spark. Do you guys think that Halo 4 will have any bosses? Such as a Giant Promethean? Maybe a War Sphinx? Or maybe the Didact? And maybe the bosses will be more stratagey based like Metroid bosses? Since there are ex-Metroid employees working on Halo 4.

I really, really, REALLY hope there aren’t any boss battles in H4. In halo 2, they were just corny and dull.

that seems to be the common thought for a boss battle and really I see it happening. I really want to see a warsphinx fight a scarab

I really enjoyed the 343 guilty spark battle. If they could do ones like that in halo 4 then I would not mind.

That large sentinel type of enemy in Halo 2 that had shields up, and you had to shoot its limbs in order to kill it faster, was an interesting fight. I would enjoy other boss battles in Halo 4.

Hmm, I thought Tartarus was nessicary cause he needed to die by the Arbiters hands,Plus killing off Tartarus in a cutscene wouldn’t do it justice. What say you?

Say what?

Boss battle against Ancient Evil = Epic Win!

I disagree. Tartarus was an awesome boss. And he was a beast… Literally.

Who could forget those teases in Halo 3 (on The Covenant, Truth dies in cutscene and a Gravemind boss battle is incoming then dies down at the last moment, tentacles retracting)? And they said Reach had big teases.

And let’s not forget the bs that was Cortana. That level was supposed to be a boss battle with Gravemind? Absolute nonsense.

A major character should be killed in-game unless it’s an ally (because far too often, we see them die in-game, which makes their eventually in-game death less interesting since we’ve been desensitized to that by that point ‘hey, it’s no big deal, he’ll get back up again’). That’s how I felt about Johnson. I had killed him many times, hell, even before the fight with Guilty Spark (Bungie did this just so they could include 1 easter egg: Johnson infected by Flood with unique dialogue). And to make things worse, a totally lame boss battle (massive scripting, impossible to glitch) as a way of saying, ‘congrats, you did it’.

Noble Team’s deaths were horrible but they weren’t in-game (because that would have been a massive inconsistency given their invincibility) so I wasn’t too pissed off.

No he wasn’t. Slow damage sponge with no distinguishing attacks (he ought to have leapt into the air and slam his hammer into the ground, generating a knock-back effect that pushes attackers away from him) other than calling in Brute mooks (which were the real reason why he’s difficult). It’s practically the same thing as the fight with Regret minus the interesting glitches (you could knock Regret out of his throne and you could make a lot of Honor Guard corpses).

Tartarus was even unpleasant to fight on Easy due to his absurd damage. Furtheremore, there were no checkpoints for a boss battle where there is a lot of customization potential (you could glitch vehicles into the control room and bring AI there as well as mass produce them).

But most importantly, the death barrier is placed right below the lowest platform. If you or another Elite crouches on it, you die. What’s the point of this? I once had 40 Councilor Elites engaging Tartarus and they all died not because of his hammer but because they got knocked into the holes and landed on the death barrier-platform. How hard it is to make a simple script to make them go back up into the grav lift? They would, from there, be able to get back into the fray.

Last but not least, Tartarus was prone to teleporting if he was moved from the platform. I liked to knock him into the grav lift with my Banshee so I could get him to Johnson from where I could have my army of Elites fight him without worrying about them dying. But I had to do this multiple times while pressured by immovable Johnson’s beam rifle potentially killing Tartarus too soon because Tartarus kept on teleporting.

Finally, the ending cutscene. Most Elites disappear from it unless they are on Tartarus’ platform or in a vehicle. Hunters are the only ones to always appear but it’s very difficult to get them on teh main platform without them getting screwed by Tartarus. But the #1 problem is Miranda Keyes. Unlike every other cutscene which has focused on Arbiter, the cutscene has Keyes 99% of the time, really up close too, making it difficult to get the other AI in the cutscene. Arbiter only appears at the end. Why couldn’t they have shown him kneeling over Tartarus’ corpse or something?

Also, the lack of easter eggs is a severe disappointment. How hard would it have been to turn on IWHBYD and produce a side effect: Elites teabagging Tartarus’ corpse or Elites walking casually in the backgorund.

And of course, you can’t get to the bottom of the boss fight area unless you clip through without triggering the fight.

TLDR: Tartarus was a horribly executed boss battle. Huge tricking potential wasted. Lacks replayability and is worthless. One reason why I don’t like Halo Wars is that you can’t save the result. So if you mess up when you unleash your army, you can’t do -Yoink- about it.

I hope not, Halo has never handled boss-fights well. They’ve always been particularly dull and unexciting. Do any of you remember fighting Seas 'Refumee, the Prophet of Regret, and Tartarus in Halo 2? I found each battle to be rather flawed, particularly dull, lacking in any emotional depth, and not very memorable.

And then there was having to fight 343 Guilty Spark in Halo 3. While it upped on the emotional and interest factors, it failed once again with gameplay. Yahtzee described it best:

“While the closest thing to a boss-fight was basically you a versus a wheelchair-bound, cross-eyed hobbit, and you’re armed with the BFG 9000.”

If boss fights are in Halo 4, or any future Halo game, 343 Industries simply must improve upon past incarnations.

I wouldn’t mind bosses, as long as they were better than they were in Halo 2 or 3.

I’d like something akin to the Mr. Freeze boss in Batman Arkham City, where when you use one tactic, you can’t use it again because he knows how to counteract it.EX: When you use a ledge takedown, he freezes the rails so you can’t grab onto them again.
