This is the order I read Halo in. It’s roughly timeline order. I highly recommend it.
- Contact Harvest - Tells the story of how and why the Covenant declared war on the human race. - The Cole Protocol - Introduces you to characters such as Keyes, the Arbiter (before he was Supreme Commander) and the Spartan IIs. - The Fall of Reach - Details the indoctrination the Spartan IIs and continues all the way to the events set immediately before Halo CE. - The Flood - Retells the story of Halo CE from the perspective of multiple characters including UNSC and Covenant alike. - First Strike - Explains how the Master Chief returned from Alpha Halo after destroying it and how the Spartan IIs escaped the planet Reach. - Ghosts of Onyx - Covers the training of the Spartan IIIs and explains where the remaining Spartan IIs were during the events of Halo 2 and Halo 3. - The Forerunner Saga - A Forerunner A.I. captured by the UNSC explains to his captors the events that led up to the Forerunner’s extinction one thousand years prior. - The Kilo-Five Trilogy - Tells the story of how humanity and the other species handled their time after the Human-Covenant war.
