I’ve never read any of the Halo books, but I’m curious to know what Halo books should I read before Halo 4 release? (List in order 
343i has said you don’t need to read any coming into Halo 4. You don’t even need to play the games.
but the books are really good to read try the first one gives you insight into the chief as he is becoming a spartan
There will be some sort of “Story so far…” video.
EDIT: But you should definitely read them, they are brilliant.

Oooooo…that’s a hard one…but I still have to say, for in depth knowledge, as well as compelling story, I gotta give it to Glasslands. Kept me reading on the edge of my seat plenty of times.

I like them both the same because they are sort of similar, they tell the story from both sides and show you life outside the conflict and John 117. I like Contact harvest for Johnson and the fact that it tells you how it all began.

Fall of Reach if you want to know how Master Chief’s career started and some aspects about him that you may not know about.
Ghosts of Onyx shows alot of info about Spartan 3s.
Glasslands about Spartan 4s.

Cole Protocol was interesting, it showed the point of view of the Insurrectionists.

For the most Lore, I would read:
Halo: Ghosts of Onyx
Halo: Cryptum
Halo: Glasslands
Halo: Primordium
and Halo: The Thursday War when it is released in October.
