Bonnie Ross (Head of 343i) Interview

She talks about expanding Halo to a wider audience, making a halo game for younger people, as well as Halo 5’s confusing storyline and how they’re trying to make the story fit together.

Thoughts?

I can respect that they’re trying to secure Halo’s popularity for when the H1 player’s kids grow up, but you guys effing took blood out of halo 5. It’s rated T. What she said in the interview makes me feel like it’s gonna be like E+10 in h6. What’s next? We’re gonna take out guns and fighting and just build blocks in forge?

all the kids play COD anyway, it’s pointless trying to appeal to them

Exactly.

“Hey guys! How about if we try to market the merchandise around our mature, M or T-rated franchise, to children?”

It sounded more like they’re getting requests for this type of games marketed towards the younger audience. Like the kids of people who have grown up with halo. Not main franchise games, more like spinoffs.
Also it is questionable why halo was ever rated m to begin with. Most star wars games are rated T too, and that is marketed to children, a major comparison in the article.

My problem with this is if you desire to have a bigger fan base you don’t remove what drew in the original fan base in the first place.
If new kid who’s first halo is going to be H6 they should be treated to the same thing that those who’s first halo was H1 in terms of quality of the times.
People used to play halo for both the story and mp. At this point the community has gotten to the stage of acceptance in our mourning for the story that we’ve given up any hope that H6 will have a decent story. H5 dug it quite the grave.

Yeah, the story may be hard to follow for a newcomer, but I think that’s partly what she was referring to in the effort to have a more understandable story

I agree, the story is why I love playing halo.

I understand that there’s a need to market to younger audiences, but at the same time there still needs to be a focus on their core audience (older, mature gamers). They’re the ones who are introducing Halo to their families. If it no longer resembles the game THEY loved, they’re not going to promote it let alone play it. In my view they need to have a Halo game for every age group:

  • For example, having a Lego version of Halo: CE. Lego games are great at injecting light hearted humor into existing storylines, which appeals to younger kids. You’d be able to wean kids into the Halo universe and have them really appreciate the characters we all know and love (MC, Cortana, Sgt Johnson).
  • Next, for older kids or teens a spin off can be done like ODST. Where it’s them vs the Convenant/Promtheans. The game can have a T rating, and it satisfies the need to have a “friendly” shooter since it’s humans vs aliens.
  • Then for the rest of us you have the parent Halo game (H6 or whatever). Which can be as competitive and as violent as the community wants.

She specifies specifically that they are most concerned with the core fanbase

Horrible ideas. This is why I’m slowly starting to dislike and distance myself from the franchise. I have little to no hope for H6.

Ok. Do you not like star wars? They are simply trying to expand the franchise. What is it about hat you don’t like?

Oh I Love star wars, but that is its own franchise. Star wars was aimed for everyone while Halo was intended for a mature audience. Halo 5 missed a lot of what Halo was supposed to be. IE; Split screen, offline play for offline players.

Halo is aimed solely at mature audiences simply because the first game is rated M? It was hardly more mature than a pg13 movie. Which most of the star wars are. The esrb rating system is broken.

But 343 don’t want to understand that. That’s why they working on a CoDish Halo plus with some Titan Fall stuff.
