Bold Possibility for E3 2017

So after constant speculation over a H3A, there has been another idea adrift that I recently thought of that makes perfect sense in the long run.

What if, instead of releasing a full remaster of Halo 3, both Microsoft and 343i announce the backwards compatibility of both Halo 3 and ODST, now with new servers and original stat-tracking? The demand for both games to become compatible for the Xbox One has been high, and this “little something” they’re teasing could very well be what the fans have been asking for all this time.

Wouldn’t it just make more sense to announce renewed and new support for the Master Chief Collection, which already has remastered ODST?

It would, if 343i actually supported the game. In reality, they don’t. They haven’t released a patch nor updated the game in over 18 months. And when they released ODST (which isn’t remastered, by the way), they neglected to attach Firefight with it.

It would make way more sense to just make both Halo 3 and ODST backwards compatible, that way we get Firefight on the Xbox One the easy way, along with the classic multiplayer on updated servers. It doesn’t matter what the population is afterwards, as long as it becomes a reality to some of the fans like myself.

It makes more sense for a company to support a game they’ve already launched instead of an ancient product with updates. Not only would they possibly get more sales money, but it would help to restore faith in a neglected product. Sure the MCC hasn’t had an update in 18 months, but Halo 3 and ODST haven’t had an update in at least 5 years.

I see where you’re coming from, but couple in things like original stat-tracking and from a company standpoint, since you already have that in the MCC there’s not a ton of reason to invest into something you will see zero income from. At least by updating the MCC you’ve got a shot at making your man-hours into some sort of money, especially if they would add FF into ODST, and re-up the price of it.

Believe me, if they at least updated the game and lived up to their promises, we wouldn’t need Halo 3 or ODST to be compatible at all. It would just be nice to see something come from 343i where they still care about their failed project, and see them make up for it. Seeing as how we haven’t seen at update in forever, the only thing in my mind that I would love to see (at least in terms of accountability) is making two last-gen games backwards compatible. They don’t need to do that much updating, just make them compatible with the One. The servers can stay the same, whatever. Regardless, fans of both games will either dig up their old copies or go out and buy used copies (or from the Xbox Store) just to get in on the action.

Even if they added Firefight at a premium price (say $9.99), we’d buy it.

It’s tough to say, man. Even if they did announce it, most of the older generation of Halo fans from the original Bungie games have left and aren’t coming back. As an older school Halo gamer myself, I’m the only one out of my group of probably 20-25 that played Halo 2/3 that still plays Halo and would play Halo if they announced something like this. Add something like Firefight, which even though it’s the best iteration of Firefight ever, it isn’t something that would bring people roaring back.

Agreed. I was on the verge of turning 14 when Halo 2 was released, and 16 when Halo 3 was released. Even today when I’m 26, I still go back and play the originals on my Xbox 360 just to live that old-school feel. The nostalgia is really hard to turn down. That’s why I was hyped for the MCC, because it was literally everything that was Halo, and then some.

But seeing how far it has fallen, it’s a tragedy. I’m considered old now by the new generation standards, but I would give anything to go back and relive the real sense of fulfillment that those titles brought back then. You’d do the same, I imagine.

And that sense of fulfillment is almost impossible to pull off these days. The process of developing games isn’t as robust and down-to-earth as it once was, therefore we get a game that was built because of monetary purposes, and not because the developers truly were in love with making the game.

Bungie, Epic Games, Santa Monica Studios, BioWare, Valve, and more benefited from this back then, and it’s a shame it’s not like that anymore.

Absolutely couldn’t agree more (I’m 26 as well lol). And what was great about the MCC was that my old school Halo gaming friends were hyped too. The two guys I lived with that I used to game with both bought XB1’s to play it specifically. They’ve since sold it, and I’m the only one that still hangs on.

I guess we just have to get used to the fact that we’re no longer the target audience. It’s being aimed at “kids” (anyone who is a teen or younger lol) that have grown up with smart phones and mobile games that essentially require microtransactions, so they’re either used to the insane multiplayer grind (I remember when the only grinds were for ranked leveling or in single-player, not for cosmetics or weapons or completion) or they’re used to paying additional for what they want.

It’s hard to say what the developers have in mind, but things have definitely drastically shifted since the heydey of Halo. It’s not the “for the love of the game” so much anymore, as it is for the almighty dollar and for the universe building. Which isn’t inherently a bad thing, and doesn’t mean the developers don’t love what they do or create, it’s just a different mindset and a different market and audience. When we were kids, we would’ve tripped if we heard there were Star Wars movies coming out every year, and our parents would have groaned for their wallets as they’d have to buy us new toys every year. Now? It’s standard practice.

Indeed, indeed. Nowadays art comes from the wallet, not from the heart.

But hey, at least we both acknowledge that we’re no longer the audience being aimed at. We’re more or less the ones who have to watch the younger generations pass us by and go with the times like we once did. I see now why my parents once called their generations the greatest (Atari 2600); it’s like a perverse domino effect.
