BODY TYPE CONFUSION?

I’m confused about my Spartans gender cause I have body type 1 assuming that’s male but when I get shot I hear my Spartan making female grunts.

I think that may still be a work in progress. It might be beneficial for 343 to have different body types and gender specific selections. Male/female. They may not have gender titles to be ethical for people who have other gender ID. Though I may be reading way to much into something that could just be a work in progress.

Type 1(middle on the slider) is the most feminine option, atleast in my opinion. Curious tough that you got female grunts. those i think are under the greyed out option and isnt changeable ingame atleast. Meaby in the beta app but i cant check that for myself

The body types are not assigned to any gender. You pick the body type you like lost or identify with most. Spartan voices will be customizable in the final product and will include masculine and feminine options, so you can have any combination of body type + voice you want.

In spite of my body type, I too grunt like a female on occasion.

Sometimes you just have to. Sometimes my spartan too grunts like a male

The voices were customizible in the preview version of the Waypoint mobile app. There were 8 different choices, but no description or way to preview what it sounds like.

This and other areas of customization in both the game and the app seemed to have a lot of placeholder UX.

Yeah, but there was no effective way to see how the body types really differed from each other. When I was messing around with it, the only difference I noticed was a choice between a thin, medium, and thick build. To me it just seemed like a “fatness” level slider… but maybe that was intentional, idk.

Yes, it is intentionally sans labels like “male” and “female”. The differences are subtle but there, just another aspect of you making a Spartan you are happy with. But the idea that female characters are thin and male characters are thick is dated and something 343 appears to be moving away from in favor of more neutral options that everyone can find something.

They just need to add male-female ffs. No more problems

Thank you! I love this comment so much.

I thought about this earlier, I don’t think making the waist different on the spartans is really enough for customization so I hope they add more. It comes across rather lazy to me as it is now. I know there are concerns about the hitbox that come up when you get into different body shapes and types but I think they could add enough differences and still stay within a reasonable range for the hitboxes to be fairly similar. Unlike what we have now that is: here’s your default spartan, here’s the default but with a thinner waist, and here’s one that’s also the default model with a different waist.

It’s not just about hitbox sizes; it’s also about being inclusive and not labeling specific body types as either male or female. All that “female Spartans have big booties” nonsense is in the past. Are you hoping for a body type that fits a preconceived idea of what “female” is?

Also it’s not just the waist size that changes based on the body type. Arm/leg thickness and neck thickness change. Basically the entire mode under the armor plating shifts with the body type slider. The waist just happens to be most notable since it doesn’t have plating over it.

I understand and I am completely behind being inclusive. I think everyone is going to look incredibly similar visually though and I find that boring personally. I like having differences for instance in past games like having elites or having slightly shorter/taller spartans I am not looking for female spartans with “big booties” I’m looking for more obviously different body types then three very similar models. I understand it’s unlikely anything will change but I figuring I’d throw out my thoughts on it. I personally barely noticed the leg/arm and neck thickness change myself.

Bahaha bluntly put, but yes I happen to agree with you entirely!

The body type option was stupid - it only looked like it changed the texture of the black armor parts, not the body shape - it still pretty much look like the same male body, no matter what of the 3 options picked. In past HALO games, when the body type - -Yoink!- - of your multiplayer character was being picked, the shape and size of your body changed.
It’s better that both “-Yoink!-” and “body type” are separate options, so anyone can pick whatever physical “-Yoink!-” they want and have a choice of what type of body they want (short, tall, husky, slim, muscular, etc.), instead of that “simplified” option in the Tech Preview.

That’s… actually a good idea.

The voices were random in the Tech Preview, but we will be able to change them in the final build, because as others have said there are voice selections in the Waypoint App. I’m with the majority of people here and think that there should be clear cut options between male and female, with different body types within the same -Yoink!-. Spartans are the peak of human physical fitness and they should be represented as such. The only place you’ll see an overweight Spartan is at a cosplay convention.

would be nice to have a rookie option of being silent, that way i dont have to listen to my spartan but can other peoples. otherwise ill just end up turning off spartan chatter.

that would be great if the 3 body types actually looked different
